Sad news were the first ever SFL premiers and a powerhouse of the Huon comp in the 80's. You would think with the population down the channel you would have a ready made player pool.

Very sad news, played a lot of footy against these guys, very hard team with loyal supporters, but you would always have a good time after the game with a beer in the clubrooms. Vey strong club back in the Huon competition. Winning many senior flags and I think played in at least 9 reserve grand finals in a row. Just got some info from Wikipedia posted below.

The Channel Football Club was formed in 1967 after the disastrous 1967 Tasmanian bushfires, which decimated the Channel region. With the demise of the Margate, Kettering, Snug and Woodbridge Football Clubs, the Channel Football Club was formed to incorporate all four of these clubs, Channel would be lining up for the 1967 season in the Huon Football Association. Shortly afterwards, a set of red, white and black playing jumpers were donated to the club by the Longley Football Club, which would no longer be needing them as it had recently merged with Kingston (now Kingborough). Channel adopted the Saints emblem and Red, White & Black playing strip and were firstly based at Margate before moving to the club's present Snug Park headquarters. Channel left the Huon Football Association at the end of 1995 and joined the then STFL (now SFL) in 1996 whereby they won the League's inaugural Senior premiership.

The Struggle and Joining the Old Scholars
After becoming the easy beats of the Regional League, finishing 2008 winless, the Channel Football Club applied to join the more social Old Scholars Football Association. In January 2009, the Channel Football Club was granted permission to join the Old Scholars Football Association. The club feared that they would be no match for former Premier League clubs rejoining the same competition as them, and that the resulting beatings they would've suffered could well have spelled the end of the Channel Football Club's existence.

Bit of a shame. Would've been their 50th year this year too. That club record score is ridiculous by any standard.

Could they not even field a reserves side just for the year?

The article in todays “Mercury” by Adam Smith about St. Virgil’s future with numbers at training being so low not enough to fill one team let alone two. If the worst case scenario and they pull out there will be five teams left in the Comp and almost certain be the nail in the coffin for the Old Scholars. Story also mentions University have lost up to a dozen players as well as OHA

When you hear that reserve standard players are being promised coin to play in the ODFA. You have to worry about the future. It is a great comp the old scholars (Played a few games in it) I would be sad if the clubs were forced to join another comp or go into recess. (where the chance of reforming is very low)

Don’t worry however the Cheese maker has a strategic plan on helping end the numbers of clubs going into recess.... time to activate now oh mighty one of the Dairy Products.

I hope St Virgil’s will not join Channel, Friends and OTOS into the history books of former old scholars clubs?

Article was full of s**t about the ODFA and the number of players leaving Old Scholars.

That is without the hypocritical nature of the money that comp throws around

Hi gents, anyone close to St Virgil's know anymore about what they are upto going forward? One team or two? Will they be fielding a side that is grossly noncompetitive in either grade? Really sad that it's happened, apparently a lot of guys have shown up to help but haven't played in a very long time, that may hurt them more if they don't win any games, others may not join next year and so on

do not worry about practice match form, i understand DOSA has been at full strength
against very depleted opposition teams

Nice Tipping. Who are the winners this week?

Much harder to pick this round:

Dosa 52pts
Hutchins 13pts
Uni 1pt

Wet weather may play a big part in the results. Very early but I am thinking that Uni and OHA will be front runners this season, with Dosa, Hutchins and Richmond fighting it out for the final two places in the four.
