Share your memories, photos, videos of players who have worn the #10 Guernsey for the Carlton Football Club.

It's amazing that this jumper has not had a whole lot of success since the 1970s.

Particularly recently the number 10 jumper has been somewhat of a 'curse' with so many ordinary footballers having worn it in my living memory, since the early 90s.

Hadley, McLaren, Brett Johnson, Mick Martyn, Michael Mansfield, Brett Backwell, Sean Charles....it's like reading the script from a horror movie.

Further back we had some real success in the jumper with a number of multiple Premiership players as well as a Brownlow medalist, but nothing for quite some time...

Paddy O'Brien, Fred Stafford, John James and Adrian Gallagher are the stand outs with James getting the nod for mine.

James played 195 games (record holder for this number), was a triple B&F, Brownlow Medallist, Team of the Century and Hall of Famer.

According to TL15's records the jumper was vacant between 1998 until Matthew Watson took it over in 2011.

Special mention to another favourite nuggety type in Alan Mangels.

It is almost as though the Guernsey had been tarnished so much, that we dare not waste a more recently valued number on players we were unsure about. At least Watto was a first round draft pick so maybe we were trying to rectify the problem, but maybe the number is a hindrance to him.

Brad Shine wore #10. Was a highly touted WA recruit. Found it hard to break into the side with the star mids we had at the time. Played in reserves flags, won a reserves B&F and featured prominently in other year. Was an emergency for the '87 GF but missed out. Didn't get cut, did a knee and returned home. Could have had a solid career at a lesser club.

Special mention to another favourite nuggety type in Alan Mangels.

Met Mangels up here in Qld a few years back. There on business. I saw a photo of #10 taking a huge mark in the board room. Looked again at his business card and the penny dropped. Fairly unassuming sort of bloke. Was a little upset at having to leave Carlton at the time.

I remember seeing Barry Armstrong play a couple of games right when my dad first started taking me to the footy but tbh can't remember much about him other than he was a fairly useful... I dunno... 'utility' I think they used to call them.

There has been no number 10 for us that been part of a premiership team since 1972.

Adrian "Gags" Gallagher wore number 10 in the 3 premierships of 1968, 1970 and 1972.

Only seen them on black and white replays.
Clearly a quality rover in his time.

Going back well before any of us born were Fred Stafford, Jim Francis and pioneer era player Paddy O'Brien.

Brownlow Medallist John James wore number 10 for us but played in era of our premiership droughts in early 60's.

His son Michael James wore number 10 in early 90's and played about a dozen games. Never really made it.

Probably players we got from other clubs in their twilight years been best since. Mansfield from Geelong and Barry Mitchell in mid 90's.

I remember the name Alan Mangels probably first season I followed footy.
Brad Shine decent fringe player in time we were still quite strong as a club.

Gags Gallagher, Jim Francis, John James and Paddy O'Brien probably share the role of being quality contributors to our club in the number 10 guernsey.
We need someone of the modern era to step up and finally make a real imprint at our club as our number 10.

Easy one, Gags was a gun. Left footer that wasn't afraid to go on his right which not many would do back in the day. Not the prettiest player to watch but always was in and under.

3 flags, B&F in 1970, runner-up a year later.....then left under the ten year rule in '73.

Used to see him behind the bar at the Royston in his white singlet, not the neatest man in the world, sometimes he washed it. Then again, the Royston wasn't noted for its fine dining.

Good story ODN. Did you tell him about the mark you took at the Gabba?

He was a good solid player, 85 games at the top level means you are no mug. From memory he went to the Bulldogs??

Geelong.

Towns ended up at Footscray......Maylin and Klomp also.

Somehow we got Bruce Reid out of that.

Ah that is right.

I had all but forgotten that Maylin and Klomp went to the Dogs. Maylin will figure stronly in my number 13's!

Struggle to remember Klomp going there but I believe you.
Great memory you got there.
I think captain James Cook ended up at Footscray too.

I lost track of how many of our players went to our retirement village out at Moorabin.

I suspect over a dozen. The only good thing they ever gave us was Val Perovic

yeah, knew that about Hoggy. I meant the Saints. As someone else pointed out we did get Dean Rice off them after big Woof. However, poor bastard does his knee first game with us from memory. He was playing well too. Ohhhh, just remembered we got Skinny Lappin. He was a good one too.
