Kind of surprising to see Murphy the games record holder for this number and how few games Fitzpatrick actually played. Richard Dennis with a premiership medallion. The period between Fitzy and Murphy was hit an miss to say the least!

Hopefully with Cripps, Whiley, Graham, Bell etc coming through we can get the 180cm Murphy back out to a wing/HFF where he belongs instead of stuck at the bottom of the packs. Could go down as one of our greatest ever players if he's allowed to run and carry more often.

David Honybun & the bush Coleman - Stephen Oliver

Honybun. Remember him playing one or two handy games in Escort Cup or something. We did not need him though.
Around 1983 Fitzzy was finishing up and we also had just got Justin Madden from Essendon and probably still had Wow Jones. Honybun ended up at Richmond, much like Hampson.

Oliver looked to have talent but don't think he liked the big smoke. One of those footballers you wonder about that if his heart was into living in the city he just may have put his mind into his footy and made a great career. Anyway, he decided to leave AFL and enjoy a more quiet life. Nothing wrong with that but played a few games that teased us he could have been good. We will never truly know.

For mine Mike Fitzpatrick gets my most admired number 3. In a period of club we had lots of larrikins and lads he was odd one out and a Rhodes Scholar and captain. In side mostly built on a game plan of fleet footed skilled players he had to be one of the tall guys to play both in ruck and help out up forward. He did it all and played in finals with broken hand from memory. The captain and leader around the ground in our last back to back flags and probably greatest side we will ever see on the field. He is a legend for being captain of that side. Best and most exciting team I expect to see. He was the guy holding up the cup with the coach. They lead well together a bunch of characters, larrikins and highly skilled footballers.

It is over to Marc Murphy our present number 3 to see if he can get close to holding up a trophy too. He is not blessed with same list of talent with him that Fitzzy had but in an era where super lists not possible he can still dream it could happen one day. If it does it will be because Murphy himself is a highly skilled footballer and will have to lead the way in terms of how to play. Does not have the same brains as Fitzzy but does have more football class. Get it done son. 5 years to fulfil the dream of holding up the cup. Your dad never did so would be great to see you do it.

It hurts to see one of our few early draft picks not work out. Played some good games but looked too much like a 4th rate smaller version of SOS and was never an actual champion. Just a half decent footballer and ended up at Crows. Not a complete hack but in draft era you need to make your early picks become seriously good players and we as a club and him both failed each other in that regard. Not everyone can be a champion and he probably tried his best but never really achieved his full potential or the pick we used on him rated him too highly.

Brett Backwell. A small footballer trying to make his way in the big league. Tried his best and fondly remember him but not everyone is destined to be a league footballer. Least he gave it a bash to be on a club list for a few years. Probably returned to suburban football or SANFL type stuff and played his football career out knowing he got a taste of the elite level and knowing he truly was a bit out of his depth. No shame in that.

Good old Digby. I've actually played footy and cricket with his younger brothers, talented bunch to say the least.

Digby. Good bloke but gee, our darkest period as a club when we lost so many draft picks we had to take fringe players like Digby from other clubs and just hope like hell they were way better than fringe players. The truth was, they were handy players at best and good enough to be on AFL but not good enough to be guns in the league. Essendon only able to get a knee damaged older Cooney and de-listed Gwilt to their club in transfer period reminds me of an era we got other club left overs like Harford, McKernan, Morrell, McGrath, Johnson, and Longmuir and went nowhere and for a long time. Man, what a dark period for the club. We had a list from hell and taking a long long, long time to get a half decent list to even make finals.
Sorry but Digby Morrell just reminds me good blokes but ordinary footballers does develop a club culture long term.

Yes I agree. He was a bloke who would have a dig, but just wasnt overly talented. The dark days are a distant memory to me now, lets forget we have even discussed it! :(:)
