If premierships are the measuring stick, as surely they are:

THE 90'S (1990-1999):

1) Nth Melbourne
2) West Coast
3) AFC

The 00'S (2000-2009):

1) Brisbane
2) Geelong
3) Sydney
4) West Coast
5) Port Power
6) Essendon
7) Hawthorn
8) St Kilda
9) Collingwood
10) AFC

during the 2000-2009 period we were actually the dominant team of the entire competition during the H/A part of the seasons, there are statistics somewhere on it I came across ages ago.

of course that means nothing with 0 GF appearances, but we were very good for a long time. Would have been montys to go back to back again if we weren't West Coasts ******* bunnies.

If you are just going to rate a side onfield by counting premierships, this will be a short thread.

I'd say a mixture of 2 different stats.

Firstly Home and away wins. Sure we hate it, but in truth it is a much more fair reflector to where a team stands in terms of a league perspective.

Finals records/Premierships.: Purely for the crucible aspect, how when the pressure was on, etc

For the most part, we were a top team, we just couldn't finish the deal.

If premierships are the measuring stick, as surely they are:

THE 90'S (1990-1999):

1) Nth Melbourne
2) West Coast
3) AFC

We were the only team to go back to back. Instant qualification at position numero uno.

The 00'S (2000-2009):

1) Brisbane
2) Geelong
3) Sydney
4) West Coast
5) Port Power
6) Essendon
7) Hawthorn
8) St Kilda
9) Collingwood
10) AFC
Thats about right, yet we had a bloody good period.

Scary.

When teams taper, prepare & save themselves for finals, not to mention tanking etc its misleading to focus too much on H&A

A team that's not contending but refuses to tank is going to appear better than it is using H&A

Where do we rate so far in this decade (2010-2014), inside the top 8?

I think we won the 3rd or 4th highest number of games in the 2000s, I'd say that would have us as a pretty decent side. If the OP is just looking to measure success on flags though then this is a pretty pointless thread.

So what's your rating for 2000-2009??

Obviously the #1 thing is to win flags, but it should not be considered the only factor when discussing on field success.

With the way the league is set up (equalisation, the draw) it is built around trying to ensure that all teams get a genuine crack at a flag. It has worked brilliantly considering over the past 23 years every team except 2 (and the expansion teams) have made a grand final. The two teams who haven't made the Grand Final are Richmond/Bulldogs who have both played in a Prelim.

So to me with 18 clubs in the competition one flag every 18 should be considered Par. Any less than 1 every 18 years is unsuccessful and if you have more than that you should be considered successful. As a club this will be our 24th season in the league and we have 2 flags to our name, which is an average of one flag every 12 years.

So if we are to compare ourselves to other clubs - on the field - since our inception here are the facts:

Since 1991 - we are tied for 5th in the AFL for premierships with 2. Only Hawthorn, Geelong, Brisbane and West Coast are superior with 3 flags during this time.

I cant be bothered going through all 18 clubs to get their percentages, but here are ours:

During our 23 years we have made 2 Grand Finals - Once every 11.5 years. I would say this isn't successful. Par is one every 9 years.
During our 23 years we have made 7 preliminary finals - One every 3.5 years. This is successful as Par would be one every 4.5 years.
During our 23 years we have made the finals 12 times - so basically once every 2 years. Par is every two years.

Overall - I would say we have been a top 8 club since our inception into the league.

Around the middle somewhere
Yeah i reckon so far this decade we would be hovering around the 7-9 mark. Need to win another premiership before the end of the decade so we slip into the top 6 and don't become an also ran club. Both on and off the field our club needs to match the strength of our supporter base.

Where do we rate so far in this decade (2010-2014), inside the top 8?

Based on average wins per year - we're 10th.
Based on average ladder positions at the end of the minor round - we're 10th.
Based on average finals played per year - we're 9th.
Based on number of times made the finals - we're 9th.

Around the middle somewhere

Yep, but lower middle-class.

We're the very definition of "also-ran."

Yep. We have absolutely stagnated in this decade.

In fact, if you take out the 2012 season of 17-5 and we are better in this decade than only Brisbane, Melbourne, GWS and the Gary Coast.

That's nothing to be proud of. In any sense.

That clearly isn't what happened though in the op though is it. We have been rated 10th in a period that we didn't even make a gf. Nice contribution though :thumbsu:.

What? That doesn't even make any sense. CLEARLY that's what the OP did and what he SAID he was doing, you genius. It takes about half a second to count premierships, hence the pointlessness of this thread if that's all you're going to measure.

He rated us tenth in a period where we would have been about fourth for games won.

This decade? Which we're not even halfway through?

Imagine how terrible we would have been if we'd tanked for picks.

If you compare the teams on wins alone from 00-09 we sit second only to Geelong.

Team - No. of wins

1. Geelong - 133
2. Adelaide - 129
3. Port Adelaide - 126
4. Brisbane - 125
5. Sydney - 119
6. Essendon - 114
7. Collingwood - 113
8. St. Kilda - 110
9. North Melbourne - 109
10. West Coast - 109
11. Hawthorn - 105
12. Western Bulldogs - 102
13. Fremantle - 92
14. Melbourne - 92
15. Richmond - 84
16. Carlton - 81

If you add finals and premierships into the equation (3pts for finals win, 6 for premiership) we fall to fifth, which I think is a pretty accurate representation of the decade we had.

Team - Total Points
1. Brisbane - 173
2. Geelong - 169
3. Port Adelaide - 153
4. Sydney - 146
5. Adelaide - 144
6. Essendon - 141
7. Collingwood - 137
8. Hawthorn - 129
9. St. Kilda - 125
10. West Coast - 120
11. Western Bulldogs - 118
12. North Melbourne - 115
13. Melbourne - 104
14. Fremantle - 95
15. Carlton - 87
16. Richmond - 87
