Delisted Spencer White

Not concerned about White's time at all.
The wrist is better and this is really his first preseason.
Probably a year or two development to get near his potential yet.
We won't be giving up on his tonne of potential so easily IMO.

So Nick Riewoldt is wasting his effort with his 14 or so km?
There are different types of aerobic fitness; repeated high efforts, and sustained endurance. Riewoldt is a freak because he is great in both, however moreso in his repeated high efforts (e.g four leads in a row to create separation; or sprinting to the wing to take a mark, followed by sprinting back to the forward 50 for a set shot). Spence could run his 2k in 10 minutes for all I cared, so long as he is good at what is more important for his role as a leading forward.

Plugger?

1) why make a comparison with the greatest FF ever... If White was half the player he was, he wouldn't have to chase and put defensive pressure on... Also he would have won the goal kicking twice and booted 150 goals as Plugger had don at Spencer's age.

2) Plugger played in the 90s when a forward had a very different role. The running power of a fwd today is critical to their success. All power Fwds MUST have huge engines!

we knew it when we got him that he was a high risk prospect and a project player that will take time. writing him off this early wont do us any favours. the upcoming AFL season will be his 3rd. this is his first uninterrupted pre-season. we need to be patient with him.

i mean in comparison, rhys stanley got 6 years until we decided to make a call on him and trade him. if geelong hadnt come knocking we probably would have persisted over the next 2 seasons. rhys only debuted in his 2nd year (2010) under ross due to a lack of tall fwd options to replace riewoldt. in fact ross was doing everything to NOT play him and was eventually forced to maintain structure after dropping 2-3 games. in 2011, his third season, he played 2 games. in comparison white played 2 games in his 2nd season (1 season earlier than rhys), albeit probably out of giving him a taste and the need for development, but you could probably argue that in the case of rhys in 2011. in 2012 rhys managed 12 games (his 4th season).

think rhys is a spud...thats fine...look at hawkins. dropped into an amazing side he still took time to find his feet. drafted at the end of 2006, people will argue he didnt really establish himself until the 2011 grand final. thats 5 seasons at a place where his performances can be skewed due to the side he was in, a side that needed a tall!!!

whats my point? talls take him, white is still a baby, he just needs time to find his feet.

If Spence is an asthmatic as is reported, he may never reach high levels of aerobic capacity that would enable him to win such a race. He may not have the physical ability to do really well.

A better test to see how he is going would be his results on repeat sprints.

poor old white. people so quick to judge. if only his last name was dunstan, maybe he'd get some benefit of the doubt
Yes, maybe if White was a player in his 2nd pre-season, coming off an injury that ended a season in which he was 1st amongst 1st year players in disposals, contested possessions, clearances and effective possessions, he would get some benefit of the doubt. But he is not, not even close, so I'd say it's more than fair to be critical of his performance.

but you're also comparing apples with oranges. its much easier for a midfielder to come in and play a part than it is for a tall fwd. tall fwd's also take much longer to develop. there's a reason why people say CHF is the toughest position on the ground. its very rare you throw a first year tall in like that, but you see first year mids get thrown in all of the time

also theres 1 season between dunstan and white. this is whites first un-interupted pre-season. talls take much longer than midfielders, so the 1 season difference means nothing.

also you're kidding your self if there's not concerns around dunstans ability to run out games or the game time he was putting in. so why didnt we hear the outrage with his time trial where he really needs to improve?

the difference between the two is dunstan is seen as an heir apparent, he can play a role, seen to contribute and have his weakness covered up/carried. but you cant do that with a tall, so the inevitable whipping boy s**t starts to occur because he isnt buddy yet. dunstan has been pumped up, whilst the club has gone out of its way to keep white out of the spotlight and are doing everything they can to cool expectations, for exactly this reason!!!!!

No but not everyone is capable or able to play like Nick. He is a freak and plays a unique game to suit his own attributes.
White needs to play a game that suits his own attributes. Not try and be something hes not.
How many kms does a Taylor Walker, Drew Petrie, Tom Hawkins or Jay Schulz cover per game? I dont think any of them would be too flash over the 2km time trial but they still manage their 50+ goals per year. I see White staying closer to goal. Roo takes his marks all over the field. White wont be taking anywhere near as many marks as Roo - but maybe he can still kick his 40-60 goals a year.

One of Spencer's best attributes or strengths though is to go up the ground and then get goalside of whoever he is playing on about 60m or so out and then outrun them back to goal, so he is going to need a tank to be able to do that sort of stuff on a regular basis and then of course we also now have McCartin, who also isn't meant to have much of a tank, so I reckon one of them is going to need to develop one, unless we just want the other team running off them all game long and setting up plays from defence.

e.g 'That goal' :)

but yes for a 195cm bloke - his 20m speed is a big attribute.

He came within an inch of kicking a similar goal against Richmond in his first game for us late in the year, when he wasn't quite able to burst free, but was just stiff that it was someone as quick as Grimes chasing him, otherwise he probably would have run it all the way to the goal-line. The more of that he's able to do, the better, as there won't be too many around his size who are able to keep up with him like Grimes did when he does that.

AFL. 8 - 10 games 15 - 20 goals would be a good start.
VFL 15 or so games with stable fwd role.
VFL Dev. None would be good.
