Opinion Patrick Karnezis - the forgotten forward

I think it's too tall.

There is room for one of Karnezis and Goldsack in the forward line and I would probably go with Karnezis, he seems more of a natural forward and from what I saw on Saturday in the VFL he leads much better than Goldsack and puts himself in the right positions.

I would have Sidebottom as a half forward instead of Goldsack, not too sure where Goldsack fits in the side but I think there still could be a spot for him somewhere in the 22.

Funny, pre season all were talking about having too many short people, now we are proposing a forward set up that's too tall

If Karnezis provides as much forward pressure as goldsack, height wont be an issue.

I know he kicked three goals on the weekend but can someone who attended the game make comment about how hewent. Sometimes players can do very little but with luck not great play end up with a few goals.

How did Karnezis go?

One of Karnezis biggest issues is provides very little if any pressure.

Buckley will hopefully be able to fix that, but seeing as he had no preseason it won't happen for a while.

He didn't play much game time. He himself in a short VFL segment said he was still being eased back into it over the next 'few weeks', so at least a month away from even a chance at a senior game. I think he said he played 3 quarters and only 60 or 70% game-time.

Preseason I dont think we were considering running Witts and Grundy in the same side. With White as a specialist forward rather than a second ruck, it would be too tall up there with Goldy and Karnezis.

And its still Goldys spot to lose. His one percenters are way too valuable.

Lets not forget we have to fit Reid in there too. At that time a ruckman probably gets dropped and White goes back to the "Leigh Brown" role.

Yes we have a bunch of good talls in the fwd line and also with Frost and Keeffe performing and Brown to come back, Reid to come back with the ability to play forward and back, and Goldsack's ability to play forward and back, we have plenty of height at either end of the ground.
It's just these mythical "tall mids" that everyone is talking about now that Freo has turned into a decent team.

And one begins to wonder why Bucks floated the idea of Karnezis running up into the midfield -> problem solved! Killing two birds with one stone, so to speak.

Wouldnt mind seeing PK run around a few more weeks in the VFL. Cant take much out of one game that he has played. But he is definitely above VFL level

Put Frosty on someone, let him take him completely out of the game and make sure he handballs off all his possessions to Fasolo. Think he is best suited to FB

I think he can play off half back. Old fashion style. Stick with your man, let him take you to the footy, Defend first, win the footy, run and hit a target. He has the agility and the aggression to do so.

Anyone think that Frost can play off a half back?

In time, I think a Maxwell third tall type half back role is possible. Of course, that necessitates that Maxwell himself doesn't play. I really hope Maxy is taking Jack under his wing and mentoring him on how to read the ball in the air, how to position himself, where to zone off, etc.

Frost's 1v1 ability vastly outstrips Maxwell's and his sheer ferocity at the ball and man will be fearsome in coming years. He'll take resting ruckman and third talls to the cleaners with the ability to play as a genuine tall back if another match up goes sour. If he can learn to fix his kicking like Toovey and Williams, he'll be AA quality.

Frost, Williams, Grundy, Adams. Some of our up and comers have real mongrel about them. I love it.

Non-issue. Reid will come in for Goldsack who is currently playing as a tweener with no real role. Forwards need to be dangerous and at his height his complete inability to take a mark is a big problem, try hard though he may. Karnezis is a long way back at this stage, although I think he is more of a natural forward than the Sack.

On a different matter I don't think people were saying we were too small because we have too many smalls, but more because too many of our smalls are......too small. We have enough talls but the majority of our mid sized players (Pendlebury and Harry aside) are battlers. Hence the term mosquito fleet. Personally I don't think it's a massive issue.

We have a lot of smalls but it's hardly that they're all forwards. Elliott, maybe Dwyer? The rest would include Kennedy who has yet to cement a spot in any position, Adams who is a midfielder, Thomas who is a midfielder... it might be an issue for our list as a whole, but not for our forward line specifically.

Bargain swap so far for paine after the last two games

Those who had seen a little of Karnezis before the trade would have known we had the better end of the deal. I don't think the Lions would have done the deal if they had a choice. Karnezis' upside was always far superior to Payne's.

I believe talent wise he can perform a similar role to Gunstan at the Hawks. The main issue being whether he works hard enough to make the most of his talent.

Going to have to bump this one as I was at the game on the weekend and Pat was fantastic, the only reason you're not hearing more about it was because Martin had such a freakishly killer game!

Ahh. I thought he meant a qld native wanting to go home to qld ending up at the swans. Not a Victorian wanting to leave Queensland ending up in Sydney.

Isn't Bradshaw a Tasmanian?

I think Karnezis could probably only come in for Goldsack if we have Cloke White and Reid forward. Reid going back could strengthen us right up but then maybe Keeffe goes in to the reserves. In saying all this it only takes one or two injuries to a key tall and it leaves us without much back up.

If he's going to work hard and perform anywhere you would hope it's at the club he supported as a kid and really wanted to play for.

I wasn't at the ground, but watched on TV so while saw it I wasn't able to see the play unfold properly i.e. his workrate once the ball left the area, his presentation to the ball carrier, willingness to run in support etc.

From what I did see though I thought he was fairly average. What I take from the game though is that he was able to kick 4 in an average performance which is a great sign for me because I've always liked players that hit the scoreboard even when not playing well! Take Bruest for example he's been below par the last two weeks, but still managed to kick 5 goals in that period.

If Karnezis can provide us with consistent scoreboard impact he becomes an option even if he can't nail other aspects of his game.
