AFL Club
Collingwood
I'll give my Club Collingwood as an Example the Club is profitable and the reason is people like me paying for memberships and paying for the odd $200 Raffle ect to ensure it stays that way.

Then come the end of year and the Club announces with my help it has a reasonable profit and along comes the AFL with it's Equalization plans and takes a percentage of the profit I helped to create. That means the money I paid to support my Club is going toward propping up another Club, it wasn't that long ago the mantra was buy a membership and ALL the money goes towards YOUR Club ..... now they've changed it all.

Maybe we should all just buy home game memberships and then decide if we actually want to support another Club we can walk up to the gate for any away games. If we do not want to support another Club we can just not roll up and buying a lesser membership for our own Club brings the profit down so the AFL wont be able to take as much or anything to prop up the other Clubs.

I grudgingly accept the concessions and leg up the Suns/GWS get because that comes out of consolidated revenue but I object to the AFL seeking to tax the better run clubs just to give it too Clubs that seem to make mistake after mistake.

Sporting socialism ie parity is always better than any other alternative. The greater good. Otherwise even your own precious Victorian clubs would've gone belly up in the past.

salary cap ensures parity. period. only so much that spending on coaches, operations, facilities can do. st Kilda was on verge dynasty few years ago. bulldogs went to 3 prelims in arrow (I think). look what port Adelaide has been able to do past 18 months. the poorer clubs have been able to compete just fine. there's no need to additionally penalize bigger clubs.

Swings and roundabouts, my magpie-loving comrade. Swings and roundabouts.

Wasn't too long ago (pre-Eddie days) that your club was struggling financially. Who knows what the future holds for any club. Today's powerhouses could be tomorrow's paupers and the equalisation money may be needed to help pay off some of your club's debts.

Yet none of those sides won a single flag between them. Spending an extra $5mil might only make a difference 0.5% but what if that's the difference between 3 prelims in a row and a flag ?

In the end super rich clubs like WC and the Pies just hoard their money anyway since they have nothing to spend it on. What's the point of a non profit organization making $6mil + every year ?

Our profit goes to wa football - every cent of it

Wa footy isnt supported by the afl like the vfa etc - it comes from what they raise themselves and the profit from the eagles and dockers - so i say hands off

The afl created the major issues by way of the stadia deals and the draw - the afl can pay to fix it - or get rif of underperforming clubs - you vics want 74 clubs in one city - you guys pay the price - stop gouging wa and sa footy for it

According to your website you made $4.15mil on top of a 6.2mil payment to the wafc.

Richmond late 80s, Collingwood late 90s, Carlton mid-00s, Hawthorn mid-90s.

Swings and roundabouts.

How much money did Collingwood get handed to em.

Maybe that wouldn't be so irritating if this "luxury" tax went toward the VFL/grass roots footy rather than Clubs who just seem to piddle it away.

Wa footy isnt supported by the afl like the vfa etc -

They put a small amount unto the VFL nothing like the millions WCE and Freo put into the WAFL.

I think they put it into the WAFC who look after all footy in WA, WAFL, Country, junior etc etc.

Oh seriously OK the WAFC .... now can we move on and get back to the friggin topic rather than all about wa footy crap.

How would the WAFC Feel if the AFL changed the rules and insisted on a % of the WA Clubs profit for the Equalization fund. In my opinion the AFL should insist on that money from all 18 clubs on a percentage basis. why should the better run Vic Clubs be the only ones to add money to this fund!

Dunno, but by the sounds of it, the second they're in trouble you'll be one of the first to ask for a handout and remind everyone "we propped people up when we were healthy!"

Essendon have never been in financial trouble, never been close to death, but I'm happy to pay for equalisation now knowing if were ever DO need help the AFL will be there.

That said I think the way the AFL is going about it is wrong, and I also think clubs that are in trouble because they're poorly run should be made to take AFL direction at the board level (see Peter Jackson at Melbourne)

You are aware the Pies actually got some of the AFL's disequalisation funding?

Did we ever work out why that was? I know Collingwood usually get towards the higher end of AFL distributions, but that's due to the large number of AFL members with Collingwood club support. Other than the facilities grant, I can't fathom why they'd get any disequal funding.
