Has again shortened his odds to win the rising star. $1.50 to Hogan's $2.55 according to Sportsbet.
Personally I'm not that fussed if he doesn't win it. It would be nice, but not that big a deal. People are carrying on about it being hard for a key forward to do his type of things at such a young age and comparing it to when Riewoldt won it. Well, let's look at that. Not having a dig at big Nick here.
In 2002 Riewoldt won it ahead of Judd, Hodge, Burgoyne and Bartel. Judd, Hodge and Bartel have all won flags, Brownlows and Norm Smith medals (Hodge makes up for not winning a Brownlow by winning 2 x Norms). Burgoyne, while not being a star player, has had a very solid career, winning 3 flags at 2 different clubs and will most likely be a 300+ gamer next year.
Riewoldt has had a fantastic career, but as a big key forward who kicks plenty of goals, he hasn't even got a Coleman to his name.
If Hogan wins it and goes on to have a career like big Nick, then good on him because he would have had a great career, but if Cripps misses out and goes on to have a career like Judd, Hodge or Bartel, then he would have had a fantastic career and when he pulls the pin in 10-15 years and 300+ games and is a Carlton premiership captain with a Brownlow or two and a Norm Smith, nobody will even remember that he didn't win the rising star award.

NRS selection panel:-

Gill McLachlan, Mark Evans, Kevin Sheehan, Kevin Bartlett, Luke Darcy, Danny Frawley, Glen Jacovich, Cameron Ling, Matthew Richardson & Warren Tredrea

Going on the above, will Cripps win this year's Rising star?

You be the judge!

All those KPP and Bartlett, so no.

Not a chance in hell.

It's an interesting situation - the media has definitely shifted in favour of Crippa over the last few weeks, coinciding with Hogan starting to lose a bit of puff at the end of the year. That being said, they're pretty happy to throw in "If Jesse can put in a big performance in round 23 he could well pinch it back" - basically implying that one more good game at this point somehow makes a difference.

The justification for Hogan to win seems to be based on the fact that he's impacted the game on the scoreboard. He should win because he's kicked a heap of goals. It's really tough for a young key forward to dominate like he has. Etc. etc.

He's kicked goals because he's a forward - Patty is a midfielder. Can't use that to differentiate.
Is it any easier for a young midfielder to dominate in the contest even when being tagged?

What it boils down to for me is this:

Hogan could take 4 marks, kick 2 goals, and statistically he's had a ripping game when you're looking at the key stats for a forward.
Cripps needs to win the ball 10-15 times in the guts and get it out effectively, under pressure, while picking up another 15+ possessions on the outside, to receive the same evaluation.

On consistency of output, Cripps by a fair way for me.

As I said, GOL, if this award has any credibility.

Some of the panel have NO credibility!

GOL?

1 vote from Jakovich as Crippa is a West Aussie and maybe one from Lingy, cause he doesn't have to tag him. Richo, Tredrea and Spud all key position so will prob vote for Hogan, KB won't even give us the time yet alone vote for a Blue and the other 3 would only worry about what whether to have the red or the white wine with dinner. And let's not start on Darcey:confused:

If Cripps was to have a blinder this week and for Hogan to have another quiet one, it will really test the integrity of the panel. We'll know by Sunday.

Would love Cripps to get the no. 5 jumper.

Have gotten used to him in the #9, but yeah, he would fill the #5 jumper just perfectly.

Side note: whoever fills the #5 one day will be under so much scrutiny. Juddy was all time.

How the voting system work, Harker?
Round to round like Brownlow or just 1-3 vote by individual panellist at the end of the year?? If the later then surely would benefit a player with form at year end? Cripps has been very consistent for whole year thru, well deserved.:D:D:D

I don't know as a matter of fact...

I understand it to be on a 5.4.3.2.1 basis but that may be wrong......and as if these guys have watched every game this year......... :)

It will be a gut-feely sort of thing. Better to have the umpires doing it than a panel of old and tireds.

If the RS was judged by counting week-by-week votes, Cripps would win easily. Alternatively, if it were judged by reputable sources such as coaches, players or umpires, Cripps would win. The only way he can lose is if it's a flat vote conducted by a bunch of ex-player & media muppets.

Unfortunately for Cripps, that's exactly what it is.
