Toast Pick 45 - Mitch Harvey

Informative article on Mitch Harvey from Matt Agius writing for the Port website. Good stuff. :thumbsu:

Mitch has been named in the Port squad for Sunday's NAB Challenge game.

Mitch Harvey
PORT ADELAIDE'S sole South Australian recruit from the NAB AFL Draft is Mitch Harvey and he’s a Port man through and through.

But entering the AFL system with his favourite club is a tall order for the 18-year-old, who grew up in the city's inner northern suburbs and never strayed too far from home when it came to his footy.

(PS who is Mitch's buddy - you should be doing this ;))

I think Mitch's gunna be a bewdy. Nice pair of hands and a good kick. Young, tall n strong local lad
hey what's not to like. I'm a fully paid up member of his cheersquad and will be following him closely.
But nobody's perfect, he's a Saints boy after all and I went to Pulteney.

Real potential. Really happy when we picked him up at the time. Did a lot better in the u18 championships than he was given credit for. Happy he is coming along. Probably needs more core strength, but that will come.

I didn't like his body shape when we recruited him but pleasantly surprised how fast that has changed. Fingers crossed he continues to develop quickly!

Yep, made a decent contest in the ruck against Jacobs too, considering the massive experience and specialisation training difference between the two.

Jacobs is tripe!

I was actually the opposite in liking his shape and size when we drafted him. He was a big lump of a lad and you can build on a great base! Look at Butcher as a skinny kid who has struggled to add much needed size and his body has suffered with added weight. Westhoff will never be the CHF we need and always a 200cm Wingman/Utility. Mitch has the framework to added muscle and carry it, without hindering his health. The fitness side can be built on and improved.

Mason Shaw/Tom Boyd/Jerremy Cameron were almost the ultimate building blocks for KPP's, tall and wide without being +100kg's allowing muscle to be built and not loosing mobility/agility.

Harvey reminded me of a young Hawkins, and Kevin Sheedy has always said fat guys kick goals!

Harvey is definitely an amazing size - I think he needs to build up the upper half while toning the lower half. He seemed to be more smooth moving in the U/18 championships than he did in NAB 1, which I think might have just been natural growth.

Listed as 196cm and 100kg on the club site. I thought he was around 96kg. If that's all muscle, he could be an absolute monster up forward for us when he's ready to make the senior side at some point.

at only 18, he might even have an extra 1cm or 2 to grow too

I definitely like the look of him more than Shaw. He certainly has some development to do in both fitness and understanding the game at AFL level so that he can get involved more consistently, but what I really liked about him was that he contested really well around the ground and in the ruck. His stats may not be there to highlight it, but he certainly has the right attitude, the right body, and the skills to become a good AFL footballer.

Basically, it's looking like we're definitely going to get some sort of a player out of him, but just how good remains to be seen. Kind of in contrast to Shaw who looks like he'll either click and be an absolute gun or won't click and won't make it at all.

Harvey seems to be a competitive beast, Shaw more so your Westhoff, skilled, impact player. Very happy to have the both of them on our list! Would rather a +193cm Key Defender before a +193cm Key Forward from this upcoming Draft.

Or to trade for a 193cm key forward... such as Lewis Johnston ;-) only problem is, we would have to deal with the Crows to get him, and these days they would not be friendly to us at the trade table.

I'm not the biggest fan of Johnston. Has a nice kick but doesn't seem to be aggressive or get into games enough.
He's more of a third tall, whereas we really need a power forward as a first target.

True, but there were questions over Polec's attitude too when we got him. Now look how he's playing :p

It's not really a question of attitude with him, I just don't think he has the build or the natural aggression to be anything other than a third tall.

I don't think we would be asking him to be anything more than a 3rd tall... we could still go after another power forward in the draft :)

lmao on Mitch Harveys facebook page a mate of his before the showdown posted the crows theme song on his wall and Mitch said.

"Give me a call at 3 quarter time when you're leaving and let me know what 5AA reckons on which crows players need to move on"

Mitch Harvey is still 18 years old. In big man terms, a baby. Would not be surprised if he is taller than the 196 cm listed in his profile. He is already a big unit. Played exceptionally well in three U18 National Championship games. I am positive he is taller than the 196 cm listing. It will take a bit of time for his body to harden so that he can be more assertive on the field. He WILL be a great player for us. I think he was a real clever pick up by us. He may well start as the third tall, but we will see after that. Do we need another power forward? Maybe. I would have thought a Schultz replacement was high on the agenda.
