I got to thinking the other day "If the AFL had a 'player loan' system, like the EPL, how would or could NMFC use it to our advantage?" The first thought that came to mind was that I wouldn't mind having a few of our players loaned out to some of the top clubs to get a sense of the small, even intangible things that they have or do, that we don't. Sort of like a 'study tour'.

It would be interesting, if some of our guys did well elsewhere, albeit for a limited period, how their reputations might be enhanced.

Could we have loaned H out for a year (with salary), rather than trading him?

Which players from other clubs might be targeted to fill short term needs while other players develop or recover from injury? For example, someone like a Moloney while Swallow was out?

I suspect putting Harper into Geelong or Hawthorn for 6-12 months would be good.

Any potentially top flight kids from elsewhere that are being held back? Is this where the Tomlinson types come to the fore?

Why would Hawthorn want someone who can't get a kick with us, and why would any club offer to develop players for a rival?

Why would they want a ruckman/forward who specialised in flailing arms? I'm just "spitballing" TD.

Fair enough. I'd probably send the whole list to Geelong for a couple of months.

the only way I could see this work is in the last say 5-6 rounds of the season, say the Doggies were down the bottom of the ladder and knew they couldnt make finals, instead of playing someone like Griffen or Cooney, they could loan him out for money to say a Geelong or Hawthorn and the money they receive they could put towards lowering debt, investing in football activities and also a spot becomes open to play younger players.

It would also put pressure on clubs to move up the ladder quickly, because their best players are getting trial runs with bigger teams and when their contract expires, they could move through free agency and it wouldnt be as big of a deal, as they would already have had a trail run.

The kinks would be big teams would buy top gun players and dominate the last half of the year...yes but you would need to put barriers in place such as limiting player movement, that you can only participate in this period if you have long term injuries.

so, example, if Geelong have suffered 2 long term injuries and those players are placed on the long term injuries list, they can replace them by bringing in 2 other players as loans.

If I were a Dogs supporter, this would break my heart.

No chance of it ever happening.

Good idea Kimbo.

There would have to be a VFL/AFL relegation system in place to make it more beneficial. That way teams like Melbourne and Adelaide could use our fringe players in an attempt to stay in the competition.

I'd definitely look at sending players like Harper, McKenzie, Wood, Dumont, Turner and Hine off to other teams so they can get more game time under their belts.

It would give us a chance to offload LA's salary whilst still under contract.

Sydney may have a couple of long term injuries to key in and under players (Jack, Kennedy) so we could loan out Jacobs. It fills a need for both teams and allows Jacobs to grab some key experience from a key that enjoys contested footy.

Higgins has had a rough time of it at the Dogs (injuries) so they may loan him out to North for a bit. I'd allow him to get fixed up by Saunders and give us a player with good quality.

Grima and Delaney could go down injured. Brown and Reid come back for the Pies. Frost drops to the VFL. We ask Collingwood if we could loan him for the second half of the year. Win win
