Please Identify: StKilda Players in 1950s Old Players Matches

Hi all,

I am doing some research into the collection of football photos at the State Library of Victoria by photographer Charles Boyles. I have been working with Ken Mansell and we have already tried many avenues to identify photos. We were hoping that posting some of the photos here may jog some memories.

The collection was submitted to the library in 2008, but many photos remain unidentified. I was wondering if anyone can help me work out who some of the players are.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Photo 1:
I believe this person played firsts football in the 1940s and was later a 3rds coach at the club. The photo is identified as "William Dallaway’/Pannant (?)" but this appears incorrect.

Photo 2:
Probably from a Past Players match in the mid 1950s.

Colin Williamson is fifth from left in second front row,
Harold Bray is first player from left in front row.
Out mystery man from photo one is in the front row.

Maybe Laird Smith is 3trd from left in the Middle row?
Can anyone identify any of the other faces?

Sitting on the ground in front row 2nd from the right is Roy"tiger" Bence played 25 -33
Middle row 2nd from the left standing next to the trainer is Jack James, he Was a Star! played 1915,18-25

I have seen the name Bob Wilke but have not had a photo. The details certainly fit. A player and later a thirds coach (Premiership 1957).

Thank you. I have now posted photos to a number of the club forums and have been overwhelmed at the response to quite difficult questions.

And thanks for the names in the past players photo. I love the other past players photo, with the same mascot!
Hmmm.... the career dates mean that the photo is more likely to be 1940s than 1950s. If you knew Brian Hodgson's age you could get a good date for the photo.

how i understand it everyteam would have 1sts , 2nds , 3rds and 4ths

2nds are the Reserves
3rds are the under 19s
4ths would be just be old timers and players not quite up to 2nds standard

say StKilda was at home to Collingwood , The Firsts and under 19s would play at the Junction and the Reserves and 4ths would play at Victoria park

You're correct with the Firsts, Reserves and Under 19's but I've never heard of the 4ths and doubt they were actually on the club's player lists.

I never said they were listed but there was a 4th "18" and it was made up of old timers etc in this post alone there 2 pics of old timers teams

I didn't say they were listed either. I said I've never heard of the 4ths and I'm of that era - from the early 50's anyway.

Thank you all for your help so far. I have had a look at the trading cards on Damien Green's footycards website (http://members.optusnet.com.au/~dgreen2/) and have included three cards here of players from the 1930's who could be in the photo. What do people think?

Possibly Ray Houston and Brian Milnes are in the photo.

Not sure if you're still looking for names to go with the above photo but Brian Milnes is a customer where I work and was happy to help with a few names. He said the photo is the seconds team from 1952.

From back left: Harold Davies - not sure- not sure - Ray Houston - Alan Callow - Irving Davidson - not sure- not sure - not sure
Middle row: Donny Howell - Jack Hardigan - Mickey Myers - Des Nisbet (Capt.) - Brian Milnes - John Smith - not sure - not sure
Front: Bruce Luscombe - Not sure - Ian Smith
