JARED Polec's battle with a stress fracture in his foot will likely see the Port Adelaide wingman miss the remainder of the 2015 season.

Polec has a fracture in the navicular bone of his foot, an area notoriously difficult to treat and responsible for the continued absence of Melbourne midfielder Jack Trengove.

:( be safe than sorry. Let's get him right & someone else can have a run in his place

Hinkley said that they haven't even seen the scans so they have no idea whether or not the injury is healing well or not. All he said was that they are prepared to rule a line through his name for the year if it isn't - and the general consensus on reading up on navicular injuries is that it will take a long time to heal.

They are giving him two weeks after the bye before making a decision.

but geez this year so far our crappy bad kicking /unforced errors puts Polec's disposal skills in another light.
We've definitely missed him and his silky disposal. Imagine when him and Krak are fully fit and back in the team together. Our DE coming out of defence and into 50 will improve dramatically!

If he is confirmed out for the year who is the next possible guy on our list (playing ressies) that should be fast tracked to try to tack Polecs role?

Polec confirmed it a fortnight ago at the club. If it is healing it will still take the healing process through to the finals and if it requires surgery then it will take the year, so either way he's out for the season. He mentioned some player at Brisbane didn't come back from this same injury.

I'd like to think it could be a mix of Robbie Gray/Amon playing on that side of the ground.

Out of the maggies players, Byrne-Jones isn't ready yet but I can see him going for runs on the wing next year.

I'm thinking as we went tall in last years draft this year will be more focused on the outside runner as the cupboard is a bit thin there atm.

Well of course he's going to miss the season with that attitude. Why would you even mention about some player at Brisbane not coming back from it? Wouldn't you want to believe that you can come back and play until the doctors tell you otherwise?

With appropriate physiotherapy management, most patients with a stress fracture of the navicular can make a full recovery (return to sport or full activities) in a period of 3 - 9 months. In more severe cases, recovery may take 1 year, or longer, depending on the intervention required and a range of other factors. In rare cases, some patients may experience ongoing symptoms or complications which may require further management.

If it's 3 months, that's 12 weeks, which isn't the season at all, since he's already missed 4. It's one of those injuries that you can't say 'Oh it takes this long to heal'. It's like he's already decided that it's a severe injury because it still hurts (which of course it's going to hurt, it's a broken bone FFS) and is already thinking of the worst case scenario. Hasn't he heard of the power of positive thinking?

Chill. He's describing the scope of the circumstance of having this broken bone.

It's a stress fracture. It's not a simple break that heals and all of a sudden you're fine. You don't get a stress fracture unless the bone is placed under abnormal stress for a long period of time. It's not a once off whack to the foot that causes a fracture. If that was the case, it would be much easier to have a more precise prognosis. Considering the location of injury, there are a multitude of factors that need to be addressed to ensure such stress isn't going through his navicular once it's healed. Such factors include:
- shoe wear
- orthotics
- lower limb/lumbopelvic biomechanics (i.e. the lower limb kinetic chain)

It's not as cut and dry as you are making it out to be. I understand what you're angle is behind the positivity of healing, but at the same time this goes beyond just healing the bone. Prevention needs to be addressed, as does fitness etc. I already put a line through him as soon as I heard it was a navicular. Thought they were in denial saying 3 months, was very wishful.

Release the Pittard to the wing...

Our defensive structure is working great the past few weeks. There is no need to change it. It's not like Polec got injured this week. He's been out for the last 6 weeks. The changes structure-wise have already been made quite some time ago. Good to see Amon get 3 quarters of footy last night. Is becoming more and more comfortable at the AFL level, but he is cementing his position in the best 22 (for this season) for sure.
