Poor service- retail

That's what I meant as opposed to being served, perhaps I should've worded my post more precisely. I find that there is nothing more annoying than being fobbed off by some incompetent shop assistant when enquiring about the availability of a particular item that you would expect the shop/warehouse to stock. Another is when you are obviously looking for something and there will two or more assistants discussing what they did on the weekend or similar who completely ignore you. My local Bunnings warehouse is a glaring example where I am convinced that to get a job you have to be intellectually handicapped.

I generally tell customers that if we have any in stock it would be on the floor, if not we've sold out as we generally keep shelves full 99% of the time. I've been there for a few months now and still not been taught every process (including the warehouse out the back and how/where to replace items if needed). Something that doesn't help is when customers don't give information like product name or EXACTLY what they are after but just offer a generic description, I had to help someone find a kitchen place mat set the other day.... but they didn't call it that. And yet I was expected to know what they were talking about.

Depending on who you ask, some upper management expect us to deal with every customer request - other upper management tell us to fob the customer off and send them to the proper customer service employees instead.

I have mentioned it before but whenever customers ask where item x is, I'll personally escort them to where it's located. Whereas most people will just say "over there a few rows down to the right". I usually just say "follow me" and walk them to the area in part because I am useless at giving directions, I might say 4 aisles to the right... when it's 5 or 6. There's that and the store changes the layout every 2-3 weeks so a lot of items are in different spots to where I last remember seeing them.

The second point irritates me as a customer, heck even as a worker I don't really talk to anyone I work with unless I have to while working on the job (either asking them where something is or where someone else is that has what I am after etc). I also feel awkward and somewhat guilty when doing so eg: Prior to starting my shift i'll have a general chat with the person checking the bags of customers as they leave the store, yet I'll always stop the conversation when there is a swarm of people walking out.

Also means they might walk back in 2 minutes demanding a bag that they were too busy to ask for or answer for at the time when you gestured it toward them

Was put in a tough position today.

We were severely understaffed, had to start work as soon as I walked in. Anyway, got called to work in the service desk/express lane after a little bit with another girl. The girl then went on her half hour lunch break, leaving me by myself. Usually there's one or two others, but given the lack of staff, it was just me. Queues started building up, both for the express lane and for people with general enquiries/buying cigs. Then a lady came in and wanted to hire something off us, which is a relatively lengthy process. Said she was in a hurry so I tried my best to get it done as quickly as possible, with the queue for express building up heaps. Eventually a couple of guys just walked out of the doors with their baskets. Not much I could've done about it.

Five minutes later, an old man came past, grabbed me and said "the lack of staff you guys have out there (on the big registers) is disgraceful". Uh m8 I'm having enough trouble here to even worry about what's happening out there.

I'll be working on the Easter long weekend, looking forward to the penalty rate $$$$, noy looking forward to the short staffed nature that those days will be (can already see on the advanced roster that not many people will be working on those days, and 75% of those in the same area are having those days off... more work for those of us turning up arghhh).

Served Mark Jamar just before. Was on the phone the whole time, didn't acknowledge me, and didn't say thank you as he walked away.

0/10 customer.
Actually, I once served Ben Cousins a couple of years ago

On the phone, Just said " ill call you back in 5, ive gotta do something" "No seriously, Ill call you back in 5" and hung up before doing the transaction

Quality human being, Just turns out a bit drug ****ed. At least has manners

I really hope you took him to task over this. Grabbing you and carrying on over lack of staff is supposed to be your fault? I'd have probably put him on his decrepit old arse if he laid a hand on me.....

Will I get penalty rates for working Easter Monday (pretty sure I do), and the 27th of April (substitute PH for Anzac Day)?

Easter Monday yes, 27th no. They haven't made the 27th a P/HOL in lieu for ANZAC. Instead we have P/HOL on Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday this year (normally only 3 across the 4 days). Plus if you're in Victoria the Friday before Grand Final is P/HOL this year also.

I can't win either way, the Taylor Swift music is played via the sound department - what's worse is when I'm there after hours they keep the bloody thing running (I think they are trying to hock the stereo system and speakers more than the Taylor swift cd). The standard music is played throughout th estore so we've got two different songs blasting at once (Hilary Duff's been on heavy rotation the past few shifts I've had  :D). Another funny thing I noticed about the music selection, they play a lot of "lesser known" artists, and any song that comes on that is moderately popular.... more of ten than not it's not by the original artist... they're playing a cover song version of it. Probably just me but I find that weird. Also I was very lucky, over Christmas they didn't play much Christmas music at all.

Something else work related, they are bringing in a new performance rating system, if we fail it we have to be re-trained.... my response to it was well hey at least I'll be able to say I was finally trained (should I fail their new guidelines... which will probably happen at some point) considering I have had to learn processes as I have gone along and there's still plenty I don't know.

My biggest problem is time management I can do my set tasks individually, combining them all in the set time limit is the difficult part. Sometimes I have to sacrifice an element of my role in order to get the other things completed. Being a perfectionist (even though it's only retail) I feel like an idiot for not being able to do everything in a short period of time.... I don't bludge at all when on shift (I might have to use the toilet 1-2 times while I am there but I am in and out within 3 minutes).

I would like to thank my retail job for making me listen to Taylor Swift's 1989 album CONSTANTLY for the past month and a bit . I am a Taylor Swift fan but think 1989 is pretty s**t to be honest. It's worse than Christmas music.

/shudder.

Nothing. Is worse than Christmas Carols. -flashback to working as a xmas casual at The Body Shop-.

+1

By the time Christmas came around I was so over it after having to listen to carols for the whole month at my part time job.

Body Shop stuff can be a bit pricey. Did you get a decent staff discount?

This was a while ago- and nup. Something like 10% IIRC, which is fair enough being there only over Christmas time. Was a pretty easy job tho + a good hourly rate. All I had to do was remain at the counter and put transactions thru.

The hard part was finding a car spot at Highpoint when your shift started at 2pm.
