It's a bit of a cripple fight, really. If the AFL doesn't cover 100% of the costs, it will likely not be any sort of boon to either team and is unlikely to ever turn over more revenue than it costs, it's all about bonuses from the AFL for having a womens team.

I doubt we'll even have a womens team in SA until both the Crows and Port can field one, not just one.

Looking at it from a pure cash in / cash out perspective is pretty 1D though. There'll be a huge amount of cross-promotional opportunities, sponsorship, not to mention currying favour with 50% of the population. We absolutely cannot let this fight slide nor underestimate how important it is.

Port Adelaide will field a women’s team in the South Australian Women’s Football League – the highest competition for SA female football – in 2016.

The Port Adelaide Women’s Football Club – nicknamed the Magpies – began in 2003, and will formally partner with the Port Adelaide Football Club in 2016.

The women’s club will form part of Port Adelaide’s drive to impact the female football space in South Australia as the AFL and SANFL ramp-up their commitment to improving participation among women and girls.

As part of the commitment, Port Adelaide will operate training and development of the women’s team at Alberton in addition to providing exposure to the elite environment of an AFL club.

Power and Magpies coaches like Shaun Hart, Mark Clayton and Tom Logan will also work delivering elite seminars to the team.

What I like here is, once again, Port put in the time and effort at grass roots. I think this is important, whereas Crows just want to jump right in and get an AFL women's team without any real effort. Glad the women's Magpies are linking in. History again

Fantastic news!! This makes so much sense and gives us an obvious headstart for an eventual AFL team (not going to happen for 2017 unfortunately).

Also, I like to think I can take some credit for this as I emailed the club telling them they should do this exact thing back in August when i initially started this thread...

The article by Daniela Abbracciavento the other day said- "no formal links," between the 2 clubs. The article on our website says -the Port Adelaide Women’s Football Club – nicknamed the Magpies – began in 2003, and will formally partner with the Port Adelaide Football Club in 2016.

Sounds like we have gone from an informal to formal partnership and link. The 2012 agreement between the 2 was obviously a hand shake agreement rather than anything legally binding.
