Port will be better than GC and GWS over the next 5 years

Bit sick of hearing how good Port run. Like they've magically created some way to turn footy in to a 10k running race. Plus besides Kane Cornes when I look at most of Port's running players I don't see many endurance specialists. The Hoff is an endurance freak for a big man. And Port are obviously fit.

But more than anything they are a damn good side who just play damn good footy.

I personally find this Port side a lot more likeable than the last one that was good.
I actually agree. They had some really dislikable players then while I find myself enjoying watching the likes of Hartlett, Wingard, Wines and Polek and of course the Hoff. Don't mind Pittard either for some reason. They are all smart footballers.

Let's see how they go. Do not disagree with the thread, guys like Wingard and Wines are pure gold. Can see many oppo coaches working out plans to counter their obvious running game before midway through the season.

They will have to find a b game more than big last quarters.

I have them forth in my power rankings this year: after freo hawthorn and essendon. But I would only be slightly surprised if they beat any of those 3 teams. But imo they will be overtaken by the expansion sides within 3 years (as will most teams) but they will be a top 4 side during that time (imo), future looking good

I think they will be up there with them over the next 5 years but I'm not so sure about better.

Port may have the best coach out of the 3, but when I look at GWS and GC, I see a team full of star talent that has yet to be tapped. On the other hand when I look at Port, I see a team full of hard runners/workers rather than talent.

Their running is the speed at which they push forward and back. It is not as though the run all day (ie endurance run), but more their repeat sprint efforts to sprint back to set up defensive structures then run in numbers forward. Awesome 2 way running as a team ;)

They have run games out pretty well over the last 12 months though. Overran Carlton last week and blew away Adelaide this week.

They are light bodied (IMHO) and I'm not sure if this helps them run out games better. I wonder also if this is part of their philosophy with the future reduction of interchanges or if it is because they are a young side and they have some more filling out to do.

Amazing young talent.

A potential midfield quality that reminds me of Geelong as we emerged.

A number of these players are not just potential anymore.

Bookmark it.

Will be top 4 and flag contenders definitely from next year at least.

Will be the next power (pardon the pun) of the comp.

Kind words, but I'm not quite as bullish on our future prospects.

What I do know is that the large number of first and second round picks we have collected since 2006 went almost completely under the radar until we 'broke out' in 2013. Most likely no one cared because we were such a laughing stock.

Then you don't watch Port much. Whilst our future prospects are highly debatable I don't think many serious football fans would argue Port's list has plenty of talent.

They are looking pretty good, but let's wait until they play a good team first ;)
Beating Collingwood in an elimination final at the MCG, then pushing Geelong for 3 and a half quarters a week later also at the MCG doesn't impress you?

They look to have gone up another level so far as well, they are running out games with more energy than other teams start games with

No, Port will regress to their mean eventually.

Agreed, there is a lot to like about this outfit, especially in the coaching department and age profile of the list. They can definitely be up there for some time looking at it all and they look to have improved this season over last already. I see them a contender very soon.

Boak, Hartlett, Ebert, Wines, Wingard plus now Polec are already a great unit and given their ages they have great potential. They are all first round picks and didn't come from the same drafts like the GWS and Gold Coast guys but they belong in the conversation like Gold Coast when they rattle off Swallow, Prestia, Bennell, O'Meara, Martin.

Add in Monfries and Gray forward. Add in a reliable spine and some decent other defenders and you have a lot of promise. They've also nailed their brand of footy. They aren't confused North Melbourne. Or Richmond who seem to always invent ways to change the gameplan and structure. I think Hinkley has a brand of footy with hard running and fast ball movement and he has complete faith in it and so do the players.

A few mini holes need to be fixed I think.
- Either a second key forward or preferably a second ruck who plays forward so Westhoff can be used more and more in his floating role and doesn't have to ruck or be the 2nd banana up forward. That means Butcher, Redden or trade (unless Port have another option on their list somewhere).
- Jackson Trengove needs to keep improving as the second key defender
- Developing Jasper Pittard and Jarman Impey as the class from half back to go with the big guys and Jonas, Broadbent etc.
- Replacing Cornes and Cassisi. I'd say at the moment Aaron Young, Colquhoun and Moore are the 3 best mids to step up. Decent players but not meeting the output of the veterans. Given Port's recent drafting history though they'll nail a couple more midfielders to joint the list of elite level players who I named at the start of my post.
