Review Positives/ Negatives v The Heave Ho's. AKA the average, the Bad, the Ugly....

Freo are pretty much the polar opposite to us right now; key players in form, confident and the whole 22 contributing. Their execution was just a level above. They looked a level above fitness wise too, their ability to get more numbers to the contest and gut run put us to shame. I thought we battled and were ok in patches, we were just made to pay full price for our errors. The start absolutely killed any sniff we would have had.

We desperately need a dynamic midfielder. Wells is that guy, but who knows if he'll ever get back to where he was a few years back.

The only positive last night was the spray the bloke behind me gave Freo fans for booing Boomer. He had far more passion than most on the field.

Scotty it appeared to me at we were outnumbered everywhere. The old adage if they get 4 we get 5 to the contest. Was that the case ? Now field kicking was lamentable. At 1/4 time boomer was going at 30% to give an example. But the outnumbering everywhere seemed huge. Did you se that at the ground ?

The booing is to be expected.

Pinchy will get a standing ovation if he ever comes back from his drug ban. Maby even a knighthood.

They are quickly turning into what Eagles supporters are.

Christ on a bike that was a crap game to be at. This playing list won't win anything, fact. So many have stagnated or gone backwards. Our effort was ok and tackling was very good, but it has got me stuffed how highly paid and well drilled players can make so many amateur errors. Some of the kicking was closer to Auskick than AFL.
I caught some of the Leppitsch interview on Friday and he was saying at the Lions they only spend 2-2.5 he's a week out on the park doing full ground drills and a fraction of that time with pressure.

Makes me wonder if most clubs do something similar? Without training under full pressure how do we expect improvement in both decision making and skill execution?

Sadly there are signs. Which is a shame. But they still have a long way to go. For example, I was not personally abused by any Dockers fans as I left the ground. If it was an Eagles game...

I vented all my anger 2 weeks ago. Listened to the game whilst walking the dog last night, and was not really surprised by the result.

This team is what it is, and it is a mid-table team at best, with an average coach.

Once you join me at the 5th stage of grief (acceptance) life will be happier.

Fishing time.
People probably think I'm an eternal pessimist, I like to think I'm a realist. In all honesty I've never felt we're a chance since the new millennium began.

I don't know what the answer is, bottoming out hasn't helped Melbourne, but staying the current course will just bring the same results.

Do the board/coach have the cajones to take a good look and be honest with themselves and the members then make the tough decisions?

When they got it they spread much better than us. There was one time they had four blokes around the ball to our none. That allowed them to create. Every time we got it our blokes behaved as though they were panicking and just tried to move the problem on. There was one five minute patch in the third where we got some running and overlap, but it soon vanished.

Or a hard a** coach to take us to the next level...

Love him or hate him Ross gets his teams super fit & hard. Nearly every game we've been outworked.

Did anyone expect any different result last night?

I was expecting a 60 point loss, sadly the players/coaches didn't fail to deliver.
This surprises me as well. I expected our blokes to try hard but ultimately get pantsed and be made to look worse than we are and that's what happened. They are in incredible form at the moment.
Reading this thread you'd think we were playing werribee.

It's a long season, I doubt Freo will be this far ahead of the pack come Round 18. Lyon's had an absolute blessed run to this point and his team are playing to their ceiling. Having the head and shoulders above best player in the comp certainly doesn't hurt.

Unfair to say we've been outworked nearly every game. I'm pretty sure we've only lost the cont. poss. count twice, against Adelaide and Freo.

Pos : After 8 rounds we have won the same amount of games as reigning premier Hawthorn

Neg : % probably puts us 3 games behind 145 >>> 90

Playing the quick handball game plays right into the hands of a hard running and tackling team, sadly, the solution to
all the turnovers this produces is to use precise kicking, which, frankly we stink at

I agree and most honest punters would also. But that's the frustrating thing, we could see what happened happening.

Scott has come out and said pretty much his standard crap....

"I thought we were monstered in the contest at times, not across the board, but certainly a few of our guys.

"We just got killed in terms of errors.

"I think we conceded 13 goals from turnovers, and really bad ones. Really soft goals and good sides don't do that.

"We're not in the good side category yet because we are not defending that well enough and producing consistently enough. (It was) just some schoolboy stuff at times.

"But the opposition make you look that way and I thought Fremantle was exceptional tonight."

So we could assume that soft efforts would mean Bastinac, Atley, & Wood are out next week.

Turnovers Gibson & Ziebell won't play again :p Jack should be playing HF and HF only, would become elite in that position very quickly.

Or we could just watch him turn the ball from the centre every week and laugh when they show Scotts in the box looking surprised.

Benny Jacobs could fit either category depending on his mood.

We are just lucky that Ross Lyon sucks as a coach and is nowhere near as good as Brad.

Imagine how many hundred points we would have lost by if the coaching situation was reversed!

We should extend Brad for another 3 years, not even Pagan could have taken this group of strong brave men further.

Pretty sure we are just a pay check to some players . Look at Nahas who plays for career each week.. It was even more obvious when Tuner showed the group up for lack of hardness on a weekly basis. We are just to nice IMO.

Not having a go at Cunnington but when did he get so slow and unfit ? That's 2 weeks now opposition players have run away from him,Freo looked 50% fitter.

I'll tell you what I find depressing.

And it's not just that we have skills like an Auskick team and got smashed by a better and more determined outfit.

It's the sheer lack of any sort of tactical nous before and during games that just is so disappointing.

There are many great posters on here that really know their footy. I have learned heaps about the game due to such excellent knowledge. We talk all week before games about structures, match ups, strategies and I regularly read fantastic ideas that would place in the best position to win a game, or at least give ourselves every opportunity. Not everyone always agrees, but there are always plenty of views that have considerable merit and I look forward to being implemented.

But week after week after week we have the only person that matters seemingly not even coming close to posters on here in how sets up the players, how we determine our match ups, making moves depending on state of the game and so on. It just seems to be the same s**t each and every week regardless of who we play, borderline dismissive of the opposition and we just set up our way and cross fingers it will work.

I mean, their midfield was always going to worry us. So what do we do about it? Nothing. Just back in our players to be better, which of course they aren't and won't be, so we get absolutely reamed as they run around getting touches at will with next to no pressure on the ball carrier, nor tags. Our structure at centre bounces and stoppages is just woeful, it literally gave Freo the game on a platter.

What do we do about changing the game by making moves to try and turn it our way when it was heading down the toilet? No, we do nothing. Rather sit there in the box shaking his head wondering why his master plan isn't working but refusing to make changes because that would be 'going against the structure he has ultimate faith in'.

As previous I can handle losing. Especially to a side like Freo and they deserve much respect and were by far the superior team. But to not even give ourselves a chance due to coaching that is just inept and basically non existent is harder to take and again, nothing will change next week just that we happen to be playing an inferior team so we might win.

I honestly think their are better tacticians on this website than the person who is our senior coach.

1. Kick it between the two big poles.

2. When kicking to a teammate, kick it to a teammate.

3. When hand balling to a teammate, handball to a teammate.

4. When receiving handball from a teammate, catch the ball in your hands and don't let it hit the ground.

5. If in doubt about ability to kick to teammate, kick long to contest. Do not kick across ground to contest.

This coralling crap is a bloody joke..the tackles were pathetic, kicking, handballing the whole lot. People using our best players as a excuse is poor. Yes we probs werent going beat them but you are as strong as your bottom players and our depth is horrible.

Totally agree they're playing at their peak.

To me working hard is much more than winning the contested possession count though. No point winning the contest and getting the ball outside to no one. Contested poss stat can be misleading, same as I50's.

We are nearly always late on tackles, trying to grab the tail of a blokes jumper, often outnumbered at the contest and sometimes not even getting to the contest which sees players stuck watching the ball go over their heads.

Blokes are either running to the wrong spots or not running hard enough as the opposition more often than not find space.

1. We are blander and more insipid than Coles own brand vanilla ice cream
2. We have gone backwards since last year - the outs are no excuse
3. Goldie and Scotty T can hold their head high
4. We are no chance of being top 4
5. Why do the mids specialise in the "kick and hope" kick from a centre clearances - just came straight back every time. Gibbo was really pissing me off

Set shots were really fn bad - I wish I did not look at this thread its making me remember the game!
