Just found out that the life of a full time part time student has it's privileges. I'm still eligible for a semester abroad, and I discovered a program that would have me live on the Gold Coast and study at Bond University. Can anyone tell me anything about the school? Is it in a good location, near bars/restaurants? The beach nearby, and more importantly, Metricon?

Any information would be great.

Its about 20minutes south of Metricon Stadium. It is a decent location, Bond is regarded as the upper class uni.

it's kinda in burleigh isn't it? pretty sure it is anyway. close to a large shopping center, regarded as probably the top university on the coast, prestige-wise.

Zoom out a couple of clicks and you'll see how close it is to the beach

There are quite alot of international students at bond from all around the world, plenty from the US and Canada.

Location is almost as central as you can want. If you got an apartment at Varsity (where the campus is) you're a 5 minute drive to the beach, 15 minutes to Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach where most of the night life is and when there's a game on at Metricon any train station will take you to Nerang station where shuttle buses take you to the game.

Bond has 3 semesters a year though so you'll have to look at which ones coincide with the footy season. Pretty sure two of them cover a large part of the AFL season and one completely misses it, not certain though.

Great night life if that's important to you. The on campus bar (Don's) is quality, and so are the some of the surrounding places. Beautiful campus.

Decent location, not too tricky to find from southport or the highway if it's your first time.

Beach very close.

Oh and lot's of yanks ;)

Technically Robina.

So it looks like I'm going to be living here.

I'm told its about a 20 minute bus ride to campus (Had the opportunity to live on campus or right next to it, but this was only a little more expensive, and at 25 years old, I'm too old for campus life). How is Broadbeach? Good location, close to nightlife/restaurants?

directly opposite the casino (where i'm going tonight ;-) ), close to the oracle, which has restaurants and such (go to max brennas, its a chocolate restaurant). australia fair (big shopping center) is a short walk away, as is the beach!

sounds like a great choice. :D

My God, it'll be a miracle if I make it to one class.

Oh hey so uh, I'M GOING TO ******* AUSTRALIA SOON

Pretty excited, if you couldn't tell.

Seeing as you are coming to live in this great city of ours I will inform you of some things that might be of interest to you. Firstly the casino is directly across the road from you (self explanatory). You also have the luxury of being one block west of the beach. Kurrawa Surf Club (where the Suns do recovery the morning after each game) is located two blocks north and one block east of the Meriton. Another advantage of being in Broadbeach is that it usually attracts a slightly older demographic to the bar/clubs, so for a 25 year old Broadbeach is probably ideal where as Surfers Paradise nightlife is more for the 18-22 year olds.

Bond University is in a more central area of the Gold Coast (Robina) but something nice about that is you are not far from the best shopping centre on the Gold Coast (Robina Town Shopping Centre) as well as the Rugby League stadium called Skilled Park. If there was ever a place to live on the Gold Coast it would be Broadbeach and if there was ever a time to come it would be through spring and early summer. So I think you have absolutely hit the nail on the head with your decision to come down at this time. One warning though is during late November there is an event held here called Schoolies (similar to spring break but for kids who have finished high school), they will be crawling around Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise for around a week so just be weary.

Unfortunately our Basketball team went under earlier this year so you won't get to see them play (the home arena was literally next to the casino too) but besides that I'm sure you will have lots of fun here. Also Bond University has a lot of American students so if you are worried about being a foreigner or something you have nothing to worry about. Have fun!

You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar.

I've gotten really good at saying Kurrawa Surf Club with an Australian accent. Unfortunately I can't say much else with that accent.

I'm really bummed I didn't get to go to the Metricon for a game, but I love it here so far.
Great to hear. I'm sure you are loving our weather too. When I went over to the states I noticed the biggest difference between the two accents is the way both pronounce the letter A in words. Australians tend to pronounce it like the letter R (eg can't would be car-n't or basketball becomes bar-sketball). As for seeing the Suns they usually do training sessions at the beach during December/January so you might still get to see them. You could also try to attend the Club Champion Awards night tomorrow night (Saturday) at the Southport Sharks.

Oh, and where can I get a Sherrin? Is there anywhere in Pacific Fair that sells them, I'm walking distance from there.
Pacific Fair was the shopping centre I mentioned in the post above. Rebel Sport would no doubt sell Sherrins so just go have a look around Rebel at Pacific Fair.

Yeah just go to Rebel Sport which is a major sporting goods chain around the country. A Sherrin will set you back at least $100, they smell delicious too :D You'll learn to love the smell of a dead kangaroo

What other Accommodation options did you look at ?

I'm interested in heading to the Gold Coast and Bond Uni When i finish year 12
