Resource Potential Port Adelaide father son players

It stinks, especially as Andy D often publicly acknowledges our history. Seems that recognition only goes so far ...
Whose objecting to us going to 100 games from the PAFC - be it SANFL, AFL or a combination only? I can't say on this issue I've heard any pigheadness from the usual expected quarters saying it's not fair.

There is no 20 year rule after the 2007 rule change that meant a retrospective qualification of Brett Ebett, which aligns the WA and SA clubs with the clubs' fathers who played in the VFL, with respect to time eligibility - but not games eligibility.

Ie their isn't a 20 year pre and post 1997 eligibility period. So if a father played 200 games prior to 1997 ( for PAFC, Woodville, West Torrens, NAFC, CDFC or WAFC) ie up to and including the 1996 SANFL GF and those 200 games were for premiership points and finals - ie excluded preseason and night series games, then the son is eligible to play for Port and can be drafted anytime in the future.

So after the 2007 amendment if Russell Ebert and Kevin Bartlett who played almost identical years for Port and Richmond respectively, both had a son in 2005, then both boys would be eligible for father son selections. Prior to the change Russell's boy had to be drafted by Port by 2017 to qualify.

It's still a long way from what we want, but the eligibility rules are a lot better than the ones before the 2007 changes.

See page 345 of AFL Record 2010 Seaon Guide.

Do u guys find it weird that u can claim father son rule for selected SANFL clubs apart from Port Adelaide?
Being that there is confusion out there about the club and who they are, this surely would be ammunition for people out there saying they arent the Port Adelaide Magpies.

well lets not forget that the SANFL owns our license

now. didn't david browns missus drop a litter along the way too?

Yeah Kane has 2 boys, but Eddie will never be healthy enough to play top line sport.

I agree, we do have a few father/son prospects to look forward to in about 15 or so years, that is if the AFL doesn't decide to scrap or change the rule.

By the way, Kane has 3 boys now. Eddie, Raphael & Sonny. I'd say they are aiming for their own footy team!

The Power should be lobbying the AFL to have only PAFC past players from up until it's inception in 1997 and not from other SANFL club's and request the game limit to be 100 and not 200. This would be fair as it would be the same as the Victorian VFL/AFL based teams.
It shouldn't cause any issues as VFL based clubs were paying higher prices for players in the 70's and 80's so it is not like the SANFL is a superior competition. The 200 game expectation before 1997 is unfair, they think they have sweetened up the deal by giving us extra players but it compromises our stand as a club being Port Adelaide and doesn't let us promote and bring through our true father sons through the system.
One example of this is Scott Hodges, his son Billy has decided to choose footy over tennis after being one of the best in Australia for his age group. He is tearing it up for the Eagles juniors and is a dead cert to be an early pick. The disappointing thing about this is his Dad played 12 seasons for the PAFC and was involved in the transition from SANFL to AFL and will more than likely end up at a bottom ranked club in a couple of years like the Adelaide Crows or Richmond. A 110 gamer from a Vic club who played half the amount of seasons has his son eligible for a Vic team.
I really hope we put a stance on this as a club.

After his career with the Crows, perhaps the Crows would expect to gain Scott's child under the Father Son? :)

We have had this conversation on this board so many times over the last 5 years or so. Just do a search and you will find plenty of threads and posts about it.

Maybe to balance things out and get over the Vic bias we have to come up with some smart strategy. Get some of our best players to make donations to private sperm banks, the records aren't anonymous anymore, and fathers now are easily traced and in 18 years time we have 12 Wanganeens, 12 Dews, 12 Tredders, 12 Primus', 12 James' etc father sons to chose from.

Doesn't that mean we don't have to worry about the timing of getting the sons of Ginever, Delaney and Smith for example as 200 game players?

FWIW I thought the sunset clause had been removed, but the rule gets changed so often it's hard to keep track.

From memory their was an article at the start of 2010 about Stephen Williams son playing for Port Magpies u/16 (or u/18) and how he wants to go on to play for Port Magpies League side etc .. If things go on track he could be picked up under the father son rule (because Stephen played 200 games for Port Magpies) ... :)

As for his cousin (Chocco's son) he would only be picked up by Collingwood because Chocco didnt play 200 games for Port Magpies from memory he played about 150 games for us (the reason he would go to Collingwood because Chocco played over 100 games for them).. i dont know if Chocco's son would qualify for Brisbane or not (from memory they just miss out)

That should make the juniors mentioned in this thread eligible for us.

It would be sweet justice if they all made it.

Hopefully they all turn into guns, after getting pantsed out of Gibbs by the VFL, it would be good to see one of the SA teams stick it up the Vicscum:thumbsu:

Edit: Assuming they qualify of course

Stephen played 268 games for Port Adelaide[/Pedantry] between 1979-1986, 1988-1995.

When and if the time comes let's hope they don't do a recount and find out that 69 of them were Teal/Samboy/Escort/FAI/Foundation Cup games.

I expect that Stephen Williams son (Jackson) who plays in the midfield will be our next father / son pick in a few years time ..

Choco played the following games
West Adelaide - 64 inc pre season/night series games 1976-78
Port Adelaide - 115 inc pre season/night series games 1979-80 + mid 1990-1992
Collingwood - 135 Collingwood 1981-1986
Brisbane - 66 games 1987-mid 1990
State - 9 -- 8 for SA + 1 for Vic
Total = 389 + 11 VFL preseason/night series games = 400.

If Port had a 100 SANFL games eligibility Choco would be right on the cusp after eliminating preseason games. Port would have played 25+25 premiership games in 1979-80, about 8/9+ 3 finals in 1990 after Choco returned for the 30 June transfer and then 23 games in 1991 and 25 in 1992.

Choco's boys only qualify for Collingwood under the current rule. His last son, Louis could qualify for the 2017 draft. If his last child Isabelle was a boy ( remember birth straight after 2007 QF v WCE) the father son window for collingwood would be open until 2025 almost 40 years after his last game for them!

I noticed there was an article about a week ago in the News Limited papers about Terry Milera and it mentioned that Gavin Wanganeen was going to open a gym in Essendon and another article last year that his son Tex ran out with the Bombers.

Port should be working to ensure we are in pole position should young Tex be a chip off the old block.

Wangas has a gym at Port too doesn't he?

Just using his AFL reputation to the max i think. I am pretty sure he is still based in Adelaide I see him around a bit in Norwood.

Reading back on this thread I reckon the afl should scrap the father son rule and adopt a scholarship system. That way the clubs can pick up a few kids each year before the draft and through this they can pick any kid that has family ties to their club. Seems ridiculous that an ebert or a williams cant get to port adelaide as easily as an ablett can get to geelong.

I saw him at the gym he owns at Modbury tonight. Still looks like he's fit enough to play.

I posted a little while back that Tim Ginever was on the radio saying how he dropped his son off at his local U13 team, playing with the sons of Roger Delaney, Rohan Smith and Richard Foster. Three out of the four qualify (not Fozzie) as 200 game players I guess (who knows with AFL rules?).

They're still a few years away.

These boys are playing under 16s this year I believe.

Not that it matters too much at this stage... But a guy I sit at the footy with said his nephew played in a game last weekend with Tex Wanganeen. Gav was apparently doing dad duty as the goal umpire. Anyway, he said Tex was about 5 classes above every other player. Let's hope that continues.

When a young potential f/s is does not matter, but with a club like Essendon already doing the ground work to get Tex, it does not matter until it is too late.

There might be an existing thread about this, I had a look but couldn't dig up anything general (and let's face it who wants another necrothread war? ;p).

There has been mention lately of Jay Schulz just becoming a father and Ebert80 mentioning Robbie McKinnon via the SANFL ruling.

Tredders has two sons.

Shaun Burgoyne has two boys, but he is dangerously close to qualifying for Hawthorn.

Of course we've had discussion already on Tex Wanganeen who has dual eligibility and is in the James Hird Academy.

Thomas Schwarz's chance seems to have come and gone, so too Jackson Williams (Stephen's son).

Tim Ginever has mentioned his kids and Roger Delaney's playing footy together. Mark Tylor's (not eligible) and Rohan Smith's kids might play in the same team.

Is Burgoyne's lad(s) going to want to play for us though after the events of the last 4 or 5 years.

I have my doubts.

Delaney married Murray Bridge girl Jacqui Featherstonhaugh, who was a champion netballer.

Given that parentage, what are the rules regarding relocating youngsters who are potential father/son candidates, setting them upon a school in Adelaide (from memory Delaney moved to Qld, not sure if he's returned to SA), and then assisting with football development.

I would assume the PAFC would have a register of all potential father/son candidates, and would be monitoring them.
