Printing from Apple to Windows printer on the network: has it ever been done?

You mean like this or this? As far as I'm aware they'll just connect to a standard Microsoft network printer queue, unless there's a driver issue somewhere.
Read those - still doesn't work.

Finds printer but fails in the print queue - "On hold (authentication required)"

Just had a comical exchange with someone on the Apple support forum. It ended with a thinly disguised "well you chose windows so suck it!".

Yep, you should have overpaid for an apple device that would do it all easily :)

Check your permissions on the print share, add "everyone" and try again.
