We have not played a home game at Etihad against Geelong since...

From 2009's list, only Jack Steven, Leigh Montagna, Nick Riewoldt, Jarryn Geary, Sam Gilbert, David Armitage, Farren Ray, Sean Dempster & Sam Fisher remain. On this day Steven, Armitage & Dempster didn't play.

It seems like injuries and perhaps VFL finals qualification may have an impact on selection. Would be nice to see Savage back in the team.

Think it is going to be ugly as kids unavailable thru injury and we limp through to the end of the season....keen to see who they bring in for a game if anyone...Membrey must be close. Not sure Markworth, (or Robinson as the commentators called him yesterday) did enough to get a agme this week but maybe next week....

Next 3 weeks against Geelong, Sydney and Wet Toast are going to be hard to watch as they will kill us thru the midfield which is where we struggle and will continue to do so until we recruit those 4-5 mids we need....

I think they planned on giving Holmes a game here but Billy and Hickey both earned their spots for sure.

Id love to see Dan Markworth debut.

On a side note - Congratulations to Dan Menzel who is set to make his comeback in this game. He missed a flag after doing his knee in the 2011 finals and hasn't been back since.

Not a Saint but Ill still give him a cheer.

Who's spot does McCartin take, especially as it would appear on exposed form he's behind Membrey? Paddy's played his last AFL game for the year.

Savage and Dunstan hopefully ins.

We could have easily enough won on the weekend had we not blown so many opportunities in the first half (could/"should" have been 6-8 goals up at half time, such was our general dominance) and that was down at a ground we're not familiar with, against a team who have won two more games than Geelong and sit two places higher than them on the ladder. It was also without Savage and Dunstan, who will probably come back in and make us a stronger team. So I don't think it's laughable that we could win this one, even though it's unlikely, especially with Geelong playing for a finals berth.

Richo may have put a rocket under them, too, after such a pitiful 2nd half, so we may be more switched on than usual for this game and may be due to kick straight for once, which tends to be what holds us back so much.

Acres likely to make way for one of the aforementioned and others who might make way for someone are Minchington, Sinclair and Saunders.

Will be interesting to see if we bring in either of Membrey or Paddy for one of them.

I'd love to destroy their finals chances, just because we can. More likely they increase our draft oil position though.

Would like to see this team

Out: Saunders, Longer, Sinclair
In: Savage, Membrey, Markworth

B: Dempster, Fisher, Geary
HB: Roberton, Goddard, Webster
C: Gilbert, Armitage, Montagna
HF: Weller, Riewoldt, Markworth
F: Minchington, Bruce, Membrey

Foll: Hickey, Steven, Ross
Int: Newnes, Savage, Wright, Acres (sub)

Dunstan and Longer seem cooked for the season and Sinclair isn't far behind them. Get them right for the start of pre season and lets have a proper look at Minch, Markworth, Wright and Acres, preferably with all of them spending some time in the middle. Hickey deserves a shot at being the number one ruck, whether that be to stake his claim for next year or to add trade value. It could also be worth bringing Delaney in for this game to take on Hawkins - Goddard shouldn't be thrown to the wolves as an 18 year old and our older blokes really don't have the size to go with him. If Fisher or Dempster are at all sore then Del should get a game. I'm sure plenty will cry that Saunders should play out the year but he just doesn't display the traits required to be an AFL player; doesn't have the skill or composure to make up for his lack of size.

Geelong's midfield really isn't that good, especially at clearances. I think we have a reasonable chance of beating them there. If we do though, it'll come down to how well we use the ball going forward, and there is where the problems will arise IMO.

This is the big issue, as identified by several of us, not least the coach himself - inside 50s:
  • v Richmond: we got 47, they got 48. We lost by 16 points.
  • v Melbourne: we got 57, they got 44. But we won big... mainly because hey, it was Melbourne.
  • v Port: 52 a piece. We get thrashed.
  • v Freo: We get one more than them, 45 to 44. We get thrashed.
  • v North. We win it again, 56 to 52. We lose again. Badly.
The bad news is, our entry disposal into the forward is utterly deplorable, and our kicking at goal is even worse. We don't know how to get it in there, and we don't know what to do with it once we do.

The good news is, if we CAN actually figure that out (probably over the pre-season), we'll do much better. Whether that's an issue with our midfield coach in terms of how to get it into our forwards, or whether it's Aaron Hamill's issue to tackle in terms of the forwards, is an interesting question.

For now, for mine, it's all about how we'll go in this regard for the last two weeks, starting this week against Geelong.

I wanna see;

FB: Dempster - Delaney - Webster
HB: Savage - Goddard - Roberton
RK: Holmes - Acres - Minchington
CR: Riewoldt - Armitage - Newnes
HF: Weller - White - Markworth
FF: Membrey - McCartin - Bruce
IC: Ross Wright McKenzie
Sub: Murdoch

If you are going to give blokes farewell games at home, and then ensure young blokes who need pressure exposure play VFL finals, then this week is just about the last opportunity to deliberately give a young bloke an AFL game.
