LAST WEEKS REVIEW
BRISBANE
It is nothing short of a nightmare for the Lions at this moment. After competitive efforts against the Hawks and Cats, Brisbane have suffered two humilating losses against the Suns and a rampant Power outfit to see themselves placed bottom of the ladder. The defence is a sieve, the forwards are not good enough and the midfield isn't doing enough.
To rub salt into the wounds, it seems as though ruckman Matthew Leunberger and defender Pearce Hanley have suffered serious injurys to add to Brisbane's growing injury woes.
Tom Rockliff put in a massive effort but ultimately the Power midfield obliterated the Lions. Boak 41 disposals, Cornes 38 disposals, Ebert 35 disposals, Broadbent and Wines 28 disposals, Gray 29, White 26 and three goals. 114 more disposals and yet the Lions were unable to outtackle the power.
The presence of Daniel Merrett was also sorely missed, out with suspension after a foolish elbow to David Swallow. Jay Schulz dominated Jordan Lisle kicking a bag of seven goals while Port's defenders were far too good for Brisbane's talls.
RICHMOND
Richmond should be thanking their lucky stars they are not copping the full wrath of the media after another insipid display on Friday night. Sam Lloyd on debut was Richmond's best player with 22 disposals and three goals, it says it all. Without 3 of its most important players, Richmond sunk to a 38 point loss and the season is now hanging by a thread.
Even without the influence of Travis Cloke who was wonderfully quelled by David Astbury, Collingwood did it far too easily. Richmond broke even in tight and around the stoppages but got hammered on the spread and for their mistakes. Dayne Beams and Scott Pendlebury ran rampant and the game was over before half time.
Trent Cotchin was the talking point following the match after being tagged out of the game, arguably illegaly by Brent Macaffer. However, the blame must go on Richmond who despite playing 3 'tough nuts' did not once send a messsage that says, "We will not allow this, this is our captain."
PICTURED ABOVE: Brent Macaffer was surgically removed from Trent Cotchin after getting attached on Friday night.
WHAT TO EXPECT ON THURSDAY
It is simply a must-win game for Richmond now. An injury ravaged Lions side is the perfect way to find some form heading into a crunch month of football. The game will be won and lost not in the midfield but in defence and attack. Tyrone Vickery if he is lucky enough not to be dropped simply must fire against an inexperienced defence. Meanwhile Troy Chaplin and Dylan Grimes may be able to find some form after poor starts to the year.
The young Lions will definitely come out firing to make a statement for the jumper and Richmond will need to be aware of this.
You can expect a sloppy, grind by Richmond in the first half and then the Lions will likely get run over the top off with a day's less break.
Following Friday night, there is every chance Andrew Raines will come in to try and tag Trent Cotchin, expect him to come out firing.
KEY MATCHUPS
VS
Patfull often takes Riewoldt and I think we'll see this Thursday night. In average form, this is Jack's chance to kick a bag.
VS
No Leunberger means this clash between Hampson and West to be absolutely vital. Hampson although impressive in ruckwork must continue this and also be a presence around the ground which he has failed to do. Giving first-use to the Richmond midfield will see Richmond dominate in all areas of the ground.
VS
Jackson will surely go to Tom Rockliff. If there's any semblance of hope for the Lions, it's Rockliff.
VS
Obviously a massive moment in Brown's career playing his 250th game, and you'd expect him to lift. Astbury needs to have another big game here and deny the Lions spearhead any chance of a goal-kicker.
WHERE THE GAME WILL BE WON
To be perfectly honest, I don't think Richmond will need to domiante any key area to win this game. If Brisbane start to dominate the spread, this game will be much closer than people are expecting. However, i'm predicting Richmond's forwards to have a night out and make it a comfortable game for the Tigers.
WHERE THE TIGERS NEED IMPROVEMENT FAST
Transition from half back has been terrible, the team is slow but nothing makes you look slower than poor ball movement. Playing on just TWICE in the backhalf in the first half of the match is INEXCUSABLE and won't win us games of football. Play with some flair, tigers.
(This is definitely a behind view of the jumper)
TIP
The boys will spoil Brown's night and will be undefeated at the Gabba for 10 years. Richmond by 47 points.
Jonathan Brown will play his 250th game.
