New squad, new thread?

2013/14 West End Redbacks squad:
BOTHA Johan
COOPER Tom
FERGUSON Callum
GEORGE Peter
HEAD Travis (promoted from rookie list)
HUGHES Phillip (Cricket Australia contract)
KLINGER Michael
LUDEMAN Tim
MCDONALD Andrew
MENNIE Joe
PUTLAND Gary
RAPHAEL, Sam
RICHARDSON Kane
SAYERS Chad
WORRALL, Daniel (promoted from rookie list)
ZAMPA Adam

Rookies
CAREY, Alex (new rookie)
GREGORY, Alex (new rookie)
OPIE Elliot
ROSS Alex
SMITH, Kelvin (new rookie)
WINTER, Nick (new rookie)

In: Andrew McDonald, Sam Raphael, Adam Zampa, Alex Carey, Alex Gregory, Kelvin Smith, Nick Winter
Out: Cullen Bailey, Daniel Christian, Jake Haberfield, Nathan Lyon, James Smith

Not a bad looking squad really, the inclusions of McDonald and Zampa in particularly are nice. Both will slot into the starting team, and the addition of Ronald will really strengthen that middle order. Quite heavy in terms of quicks, but that is our strength after all. Haberfield can count himself unlucky, but he will probably still be one of the first picked in the ODD side. It's just that he is a limited overs specialist, and we seem to be focusing on the Shield - which can only be a good thing.

Still lacking that extra batsman or two, but hopefully this is a sign that Kelvin Smith might be in with a show next season. That kid is quality. Raphael and Ross will no doubt get chances too, along with Sam Miller and Jake Brown.

And for anyone wondering, Nick Winter is a left arm quick from the ACT and was the standout in the Futures League last season.

Best XI for the Shield?

Michael Klinger
Phil Hughes
Callum Ferguson
Travis Head
Andrew McDonald
Tim Ludeman
Johan Botha
Kane Richardson
Chadd Sayers
Gary Putland
Adam Zampa

I still think it's the three quicks, two spinners and McDonald.

They seem to like Raphael so I'd expect him in for probably Richardson, with him opening and moving everyone down one. McDonald/Sayers/Putland/Botha/Zampa is good enough bowling wise, although it is a long tail

Winter is decent, can't believe Worrall got a full contract. Redbacks are doing another pre-season in Darwin around August and likely have a couple of trial games as well.

Still not enough batting depth, the addition of McDonald can only strengthen the team so far, hopefully one of Carey or Winter can stand up and cement a place in the 11.

Will this finally be the season Fergie starts pushing for test team selection?

Doubt it but you never know.

Ship has sailed

Yep, almost 29 and still averages mid-30's. Could potentially do a Marcus North if he has a couple of decent seasons on the trot but don't see it happening.

U19 Quad/Triangle (AUS/NZ/INDIA/PNG) series happening in Darwin late June. Should be a few SA blokes in the mix for that series and reportedly all State talent ID managers will be there.

There's a lot of changes from the last squad.

Kelvin Smith, Guy Walker, Billy Stanlake, Ben Ashkenazi, Joel Logan, Tom Andrews & Jaron Morgan out

Tom Leaver, Alex Gregory, Riley Ayre, Matthew Kelly, Josh Dunning, Jeremy Maher & Gabe Bell in.

Valente & Gregory the two SA players in the team. They said they wanted more fast bowlers this time around.

Quicks might get a touch up like the Sri Lankian U19's did to them a few years ago in Darwin.

Unlikely to be on Fox, doubt there will be coverage besides CA media and video releases via their website.

Wondering how Botha and Zampa will both fit in the same side?

Former South African Test tweaker Botha has offered to step down in games where the Redbacks use just one spinner - usually on road trips against Western Australia and Queensland.

"We won't always play two spinners, obviously at the places like the Gabba and WACA we will probably only use one," revealed Redbacks coach Darren Berry. "Botha has come forward and said if we only play one spinner and Zampa is on fire I don't need to play."

"Johan is as competitive as they come but has no interest in holding someone out of a bowling spot in particular."

Couldn't Botha just bat at 7? Or don't you think he's good/consistent enough at FC level with the blade?

I'd say Ludeman isn't a good enough bat to bat top 6

That's good to hear.

Nothing worse than carrying a skipper who doesn't deserve to be in the side on merit...

Why worry about Botha, you guys have picked up the best cricket brain in Australia who will bat 6 and befuddle most batsman with his canny medium pacers, Ludeman can bat 7 and you play your best spinner be that Botha or Zampa. I'm anticipating a captaincy change at some stage, I can't rate McDonald highly enough, it's a massive loss for Victoria and a huge gain for your team.
