Rather than bumping an old thread, I thought it would be more appropriate to make a new one.

Looking back on it, I think this is one of the most interesting drafts in recent memory. A lot of really good players have come from it, and of course there were a a lot of duds. If this draft were to be redone today, post how you think it would go.

My attempt (didn't put too much thought into it, and in the end it's subjective, so let's try to keep the complaints to a minimum):
Pick 1-Melbourne- Nic Naitanui
Pick 2-West Coast- Dayne Beams
Pick 3- Fremantle- Stephen Hill
Pick 4- Port Adelaide- Luke Shuey
Pick 5- Essendon- Michael Hurley
Pick 6- Carlton- Chris Yarran
Pick 7- Brisbane- Daniel Rich
Pick 8- Richmond- Jack Ziebell
Pick 9- North Melbourne- Hamish Hartlett
Pick 10- Adelaide- Rory Sloane
Pick 11- Collingwood- Steele Sidebottom
Pick 12- Sydney- Daniel Hannebery
Pick 13- St. Kilda- David Zaharakis
Pick 14- Western Bulldogs- Tyrone Vickery
Pick 15- Geelong- Jack Redden
Pick 16- Hawthorn- Ryan Shoenmakers

In the end, I think a lot of the clubs would've been happy with the player they got originally.

Would you really want Tyrone Vickery? Probably a downgrade on Roughead and Campbell.

Right now Vickery and Roughead are equal with Vickery having more potential, both CLEARLY ahead of Campbell

And a bit of bias in Garlett's case?

And nope, not biased at all. Actually could go a bit higher since his has two seasons over 35 goals if I remember correctly. Nearly has 50 in 2011 and was top 10 in the Coleman. WC offered a first rounder for him. Very good player

EDIT: 29 goals in 2012, 48 goals in 2011, 39 in 2010. One of the best in his position

Jacobs was the 2006 draft.

God no.

Yarran would still go to Carlton at pick six and be a top ten pick. Few players have Yarran's combination of pace, awareness and skill on both sides of the body. More competitive than many give him credit for. Absolute jet and a matchwinner who can tear a side apart because he makes every touch count.

But the point being, with similar types already at the club (Cordy also i guess), wouldn't they go a more 'best available' or needs based approach? Although there seems to be SFA in terms of KPF's that the Dogs so badly need.

This is based on clubs current needs:

1 - Melbourne - Nic Natainui (Need a ruck)
2 - West Coast - Dayne Beams (Have a very good midfield but he will make them even better)
3 - Fremantle - Michael Hurley (Can play forward or back, Freo need another KPP)
4 - Port Adelaide - Luke Shuey (Fast midfielder who can win clearances, something Port lacks)
5 - Essendon - Daniel Hannebery (Great clearance midfielder to help Jobe)
6 - Carlton - David Zaharakis ( Helps their clearances mids and is good on the inside and outside)
7 - Brisbane - Steele Sidebottom (Classy midfielder they need)
8 - Richmond - Jack Redden (Will be a good clearance player for them)
9 - North Melbourne - Chris Yarran (Good outside player, can provide run off half back)
10 - Adelaide - Stephen Hill (Good outside player to help Dangerfield and Thompson)
11 - Collingwood - Tom Rockliff (Good inside mid to help Ball)
12 - Sydney - Tyrone Vickery (Need a KPF)
13 - St Kilda - Daniel Rich (Best mid available)
14 - Western Bulldogs - Rory Sloane (Best mid available)
15 - Geelong - Jack Ziebell (Best mid available)
16 - Hawthorn - Hamish Hartlett (Best mid available)

If it were done again:

1. Nic Natainui
2. Dayne Beams
3. Michael Hurley
4. Luke Shuey
5. Daniel Hannebery
6. Jack Redden
7. David Zaharakis
8. Steele Sidebottom
9. Sam Jacobs
10. Daniel Rich
11. Rory Sloane
12. Tom Rockliff
13. Stephen Hill
14. Chris Yarran
15. Jack Ziebell
16. Hamish Hartlett

Vickery wouldn't be best available but you do need a KPF and Vickery is the type of player you would look at. Cordy and Roughead have taken there time and would wanna start getting a regular game soon (not so much Roughead more Cordy).

Same reason I put Nic Nat at one, Melbourne need a ruckman and x factor.
Put Hurley at three because Freo need a forward.

Your overrating Zaharakis here, good player but Carlton would take Sidebottom, Redden, Yarran, Hill and Rockliff all before him. Would go 10-20 if redone today

Melbourne need mids desperately, not a ruckman. Howe has a bit of X-factor about him too, but agree with the reasoning.

Though this would be brought up, I rate him very high. Rockliff, Redden and Sidebottom are all clearance players too similar to Judd, Mclean, Carrazzo, etc. Zaharakis is pretty fast, kicks goals and plays on the inside and outside. Although I could see you taking these players, it's just my opinion on what your club needs. I could see you possibly taking Yarran but not Hill, Hill hasn't done that much yet.

Nic Nat isn't just a ruck, he can play mid in bursts and at FF. Jamar won't last forever and they've just traded Martin.
Melbourne are in trouble but they still have Jones, Trengrove, Sylvia and Davey when he's on. Tappscott, Magner, Bartram and Blease will all improve as well. Add Nic Nat to that group with Jamar and Clark rotating through the Rick and forward line and that isn't a bad group.

Zaharakis would compliment them very nicely but I think he's to similar to Judd and Murphy which may not work. We could let him play as an outside midfielder or a half forward. We actually do need another goal scoring mid who is capable of kicking 30+ goals. I do think Sidebottom has more polish which is another thing we need, and didn't Rockliff start as a FF?

Davey and Bartram are shot with injuries and play mainly back anyway. Doesn't leave us much in the midfield, Magner's barely AFL standard. We've got enough ruck stocks in Gawn, Spencer, Fitzy etc (yeah i know they're all speculative). Maybe it's just 'cause i hate Natnui. We could always play Sylvia in the ruck and Frawley at FF anyway;)

People have been saying this for a while now.

Agree with both of you... hes becoming one of those guys that he must live up to his Potential soon or the word potential must be dropped.
But looking at pics of him Vs the WB geez he looks huge! Legs like tree trunks! and a massive 65mtr bomb of his for a goal looked the goods!! Cleared the line with a couple meters to spare! fingers crossed he stays injury free!

I agree with it being said quite often but I've never said he will explode until now. Just feel that more leadership and performance is required now that they have lost some of their experienced players and he is ready to take upon a bigger roe.
