CARLTON V NORTH MELBOURNE
Round 18 - Saturday 1st August 7.20Pm
Round 18 - Saturday 1st August 7.20Pm
PREVIEW
It might seem strange, but you are not dreaming. It has been quite a long time since Carlton has faced North Melbourne on a Saturday night. And it is not that often that it is a blues home match. The time has come when Jarrad Waite will face his old side as a shin-boner, having turned his back on the club and its supporters, searching for more opportunity. Lindsay Thomas is known to have a 'field day' when facing against the blues, averaging around 4 goals in every encounter with them.
North Melbourne so far have been inconsistent with their performances.
Along with impressive wins over Richmond, West Coast and Geelong came disappointing losses against Collingwood, Adelaide and Gold Coast.
If they want to consider themselves as contenders for the finals, they can't afford to drop any game they are expected to win from now on. For them, beating the blues is a must.
Carlton have had a big year, making headlines for all the wrong reasons.
The team has been accused of not performing and the supporters had begun to lose faith when the club hit rock bottom before Mick Malthouse's sacking.
Now under John Barker, the blues have shown promise and have proved that things will only get better with a new group of young names such as
Patrick Cripps, Nick Graham, Sam Docherty, Dylan Buckley and Nick Holman exciting the fans, led by in-form skipper Marc Murphy.
With finals out of reach, Carlton are only wanting to maintain the positivity for the rest of the year and bring it into the many seasons that await.
LAST WEEK
North Melbourne came off an impressive win against Brisbane. Brent 'Boomer' Harvey celebrated his 400th game in style, ending up as the leading disposal winner for the team as the Kangaroos destroyed the Lions by 72 points. The talls in Petrie and Brown kicked 7 between them while Jacobs and Garner applied great tackling pressure. With a favourable run home, North Melbourne are making a statement as they aim to find a spot for the finals.
Carlton on the other hand, was not far off from revisiting the darkest days of its history. The injury-plagued blues had recorded their worst lost in their 119 years of existence, going down to the in-form premiership favourites Hawthorn by 138 points. It was a game that milestone man, Marc Murphy (200 games) would not wish to remember. The only positive Carlton could have taken out of it was the young players in Boekhorst, Holamn, Johnson and Walsh showing signs of hope for the club's future. Other than that, all the talk has been about whether John Barker will be the man to take this club forward.

POSSIBLE MATCH-UPS
TODD GOLDSTEIN V MATTHEW KREUZER
While Kreuzer is still gaining match fitness, he is also showing some impressive form.
But this match won't be easy for him as he is gong up against arguably the best ruckman in the game as of now.
BRENT HARVEY V ED CURNOW
Whether it's a tagging role remains to be seen, but the last time these two were put up against each other, Curnow had almost made it a night to forget for little Boomer.
Could history repeat itself?
DREW PETRIE V MICHAEL JAMISON/SAM ROWE
Jamison has so far had a season that he'd wish to never look back on. A horrible run with injuries and some poor form. Sam Rowe also has been disappointing in a few games this year.
Could one of them surprise many and keep Petrie quiet?

LAST TIME THEY MET
A crowd below 40, 000 at Etihad Stadium, saw the blues prevail in an upset that would leave North Melbourne questioning whether top 4 was still in their reach. Last years match saw Lachie Hansen, Jack Ziebell and Aaron Black unable to bring their A-games while Brent 'Boomer' Harvey in particular quarters was tagged heavily. Lachie Henderson kicked a career high six goals and Jarrad Waite taking 10 marks as well as booting four goals, while Cameron Wood made his return to AFL football worth the wait. Andrejs Everitt went down in the first quarter with a PCL knee injury, while Troy Menzel copped a stinger in the shoulder, frightening the blues supporters. Even though Todd Goldstein was dominating in the ruck for the Kangaroos, as was Andrew Swallow in the clearances, it was Bryce Gibbs and Kade Simpson who would continue to impress with their consistent performances, leading in the disposal sheet. Lindsay Thomas also gave North a bit of hope, kicked 4 goals (1 in each quarter of the match), proving that Carlton was his favourite opponent.
PREDICTION
While the blues have little to play for compared to the kangaroos, they would come out hoping they don't dish up the same performance as the previous week.
North Melbourne by 29 points.
