All the talk of Shoe being the replacement. Wasn't he already in our best 22 at the end of last year? Frawley was being thrown forward through parts of last year, but that was when we had Lake. So Frawley may not be an option in 2016, unless Kiwi and/or Brand really come on.

Hale has gone too, so there's a new name that has to slot in with Rough out (and that assumes Shoe plays anyway).

I can see Sicily, Shem, Hardwick and maybe Burton (near mid year) getting games up forward.

I know Shem is still rookied, but there's now an opportunity to upgrade through long term injury, plus we already can nominate a rookie as our senior list is shy of the limit isn't it? (I think that was mentioned here in another thread)

Even though the injury was being managed I wonder if it did have some impact on Roughys form last year. Anyways as Clarko says "one soldier down replace him with another". At least we have the NAB challenge to see who's serious about stepping up

Out: Roughead
In: Howe

O'Brien is nowhere near it and Howe has talent to burn. I also think that Burton will have a chance to impress in the preseason. Sicily, too.

As mentionad by jack russell, pre season game one will be the premiership team extended to 26

Howe and brand/heatherley might be no 25 and 26 now rough is on his nuptials

The fact that there is definitely a spot up for grabs should do wonders for the performances of those who are competing for it. May the best man win.

This is the important part: we have 6-7 weeks to assess the replacements and formulate game plans to suit each one. There is time to experiment, and it gives time for the youngsters to put their hand up, and gives them hope for the upcoming season.

It may be that we adapt the team and the game plan, depending on the opponent.
Perhaps we use a midfielder (Howe) against some teams, a tall forward like O'Brien against others and a more mobile forward like Sicily against others?

This is a significant blow for us.
Its a set back no doubt but for every setback there is opportunity. Remember gunners going down in the qualifying it let schoey in to replace him. He took it with both hands. The good thing is he will be back for finals

The way he was covered during the cancer scare gives me reasonable confidence we'll be okay. He is absolutely required for finals time though. On another note, who gets scan results on a Sunday morning?

I keep thinking this is shite but every time the hawks get knocked down we seem to only get better or more competitive... Time will tell if this will be the case in 16.....although rough is an integral part of the club it does explain now some poor form in the past... I kind of am confused as to why they've held off from operating isn't it worse the older you get, I just hope clarko has a plan!!!

It's over. Throw in the towel and see you next year.

We don't know Hawthorn without the Ruffster. From 2012 after the Achilles to now he has played 95 of the last 101 games that made up 4 seasons.

2012 he missed round 1 vs coll and round 20 vs port. Played 23/25.

2013 he played every game 25/25.

2014 he missed round 14 vs port and round 21 vs freo. He played 23/25 games.

2015 he missed round 14 vs coll and round 15 vs freo as they cut half his face off. He played 24/26 games.

He has played every final in the last 4 years. He has only missed 6 games. The man is a machine.

This bites bigtime.

Honestly are we just gonna pretend that swapping him for a Sicily or TOB mixture for half a freaking year will not seriously hurt us? So you've replaced a dude with 4 limbs with a dude with 4 limbs, but beyond that do the stats even vaguely compare? (let alone the versatility and leadership)

Rough in 24 games in 2015 averaged 19.3 disposals scoring 14pts with 1 hit out and 3 tackles.

Sicily in his 3 games averaged 12.6 disposals scoring 8 points with only 1 tackle per game.

That's Sicily playing in his optimum position, not trying replace roughead, not rucking nor playing as a mid, and not taking the better defenders etc, often with roughead on the ground.

Roughead even not playing always as a forward still smashes Scilly. And Sicily is better than TOB.

It's over folks.
No Hale no Roughy no Lake no flag.
It's a fourgone conclusion.

If it was a final, the key chioce to come in would be spangher. But given its early, there will be experimentation with young players
Yep a good opportunity to see who may "cut the mustard" as a permanent KPF.
