I know everyone is different but how do you approach a 21km event? Just simple as setting a min/km target? What sort of kms do you do in the week leading up? Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers.

I've only done one. I basically just used my PB 10km time (min/km) and allowed for a little extra as a target.

If you google search half marathon training plans there are plenty out there. just make sure you are building up your long run distance every week. Pace isn't the issue for this run. Just get the kilometers in and get used to being out there for 90 minutes to 2 hours.

All i did was make my weekend run in say the 10 weeks leading up longer and Longer.

Eg 10 week one then up until say 24-25 then backed off, i like to get the distance and more in

My watch predicts a half marathon of an hour 31 but im only down to hour 44 which is average at best i know but thats my advice

This year will be my 3rd City2Surf, progressing from Blue group in 2013 through the Green in 2014 to Red (the front group) in 2015. Naturally with 80000 starters spread amongst the groups it's going to be congested particularly from the start to the end of the tunnel. Save petrol tickets for Heartbreak Hill, then charge up as you pass about 300 going up. You'll also pass a similar number if you practice not hydrating for about 10km, I only took one drink (after HH) last year and train accordingly.

Before the run I suggest you get there early particularly if you have gear to drop off. I like to do a warm up an hour before the start, and get into the start area about 30 minutes before the wave is due to start (otherwise you'll be waiting for ages, particularly in the Blue Group). At the finish, also be prepared not to use the phone at Bondi, reception is generally cactus with so many people.

As for this week, despite training being screwed because of the Cyclone and the Twilight Run Half being curtailed thanks to a storm warning, I'm just hoping to finish in Canberra without cramping. Next year I plan to step up to 50km at the same event so I'd like to prove I can do the 42km course first.

Im in the red this year, just hoping i can get out and do a good time, but been warned i wont get near it.

Heartbreak hill need extra hill work?

Yep, well run.

I did my one and only HM in 2013 and did it in 1:38:01 which I was delighted with. Will have to look into another sometime soon.

So....nipple rash:straining: Who gets it and how do you prevent it/deal with it?

I'm a heavy sweater and after 13km Saturday morning I was pretty raw.

Did another 13km Sunday but before I headed out I applied band aids (which isn't great anyway as I have a hairy chest). Anyway, after a few kms the pain was pretty intense. Stopped to check things out and the band aids had come off and the chaffing had become bleeding. Pain in the arse really.

I await your wisdom.

Without sounding silly (The Geelong 1/2 was my first ever event) l checked out the Tomato Timing site last night for the race times. I felt like a kid in a lollie shop. I had no idea all the splits, data that was there. Also got my first email with race pic's to buy. Now to set my sites on the run at Halls Gap next month.

bodyglide!!

Canberra didn't quite go as planned, with 3 unscheduled pit stops (the 3rd of which basically finished my chances of a sub 4 hour) meaning I had to settle for a 4:10 despite a little foot pain in the late stages. So it's back on the horse now that the pain has largely subsided, with Gold Coast in mind. Lead up runs such as a local half marathon up here and the 14km City2South in Brisbane (perhaps more of a warm up to City2Surf, in the Red group for Brisbane for the 2nd year in a row) also locked in.

Last minute entry into an 8k anzac run was a 1pm run

Im not good during the day and the grass allergy kicked in for the bush part

Ended up ave pace 4:59 was disappointed because the last three k all over 5 20 legs had nothing after a good start, bad sign for city to casino in 3 weeks

Hopefully its just because ive done a lot of ks for training the last few weeks

Anyone go through bad running form speed wise and struggled to catch their best times?

Trying to prep for the RunMelbourne 1/2M in about 3 months. Training pretty consistently each week, but bloody thing holding me back is shin/calf soreness. Seriously killing my splits and can barely do more than 10km before the calves are burning :/

Managing between an average of 5.00-5.20 over 8-10km atm, but this calf/shin thing is killing me :( Any ideas? Been basically icing them after runs and stretching a crap load, in addition to swims on off days.

Cheers fellas. Some bloody good times up above me. :D

10 weeks to Gold Coast, entry for that lodged last week along with those for a local half (which is closer to 20km) at the end of May and the City2South in Brisbane the weekend after Queens Birthday (Red Group) which serve as the lead ins. Hopefully this time the preparation won't disrupted by cyclones, rain canceling events or unscheduled pit stops mid race.

I achillies and calf problems this year. Went to a physio got some dry needling and some stretches i could do i found it makes a big difference. Dry needling made it feel a lot better had it taped for a week and now i have stretches to do twice a day that seems to keep the pain under control.

My wife used a lot of rock tape with her injury to get through marathon last year though some dont like to do that

I've been battling a bit since the Geelong 21km a few weeks ago. Still running OK but just a bit if a mental hurdle to get over.
Averaged 4:55/km for 21km now struggling to match that time over shorter distances. Putting it down to race conditions, adrenaline etc. Need to lock myself into a few races to get back into the groove again.
