Discussion Junction Oval / Moorabbin redevelopments

Not elitist at all. You won't find more blue collar than me.

It comes down to disposable income and desire to attend games in the CBD. Going to the footy isn't just driving to Linton st, paying a few bucks for entry any more.

It's a massive financial hit for a lot of people, but as I said, the diehards won't have a problem with it. And it's not just about incomes. I have friends in Sth Franga who only go to 3 games. It's about disposable time as well. Factor in approx 90 mins travel each way, fuel, parking, etc etc. Getting home at midnight.

Some - like myself - buy a membership even though I can't get to many games due to family commitments. My opinion is that if it too expensive or difficult to get to games, then it's a disincentive for people.

Theer are people in every area of Melb that cannot get to the footy or afford a membership.

I think you are taking my comments out of context. FWIW, people who bought in East Bentleigh 20 years ago are doing mighty fine. It's all about lifestyle choice and I am not judging anyone on this.

Overstretching? A $300k mortgage is a $300k mortgage regardles if it's in East bent or Hastings. If you have $400k deposit then you can choose the lifestyle you want. nothing wrong with that.

All I am saying is that if we move, I'd prefer it to be back to Moorabbin. If we stay then so be it. I have argued on here that no one goes to training and that it should only be about the players.

If its taking you an hour and a half each way you are going the wrong way.
I'd be pissed off it it took an hour to go that distance.
From Narre North, I went to nearly every home game in 2009, 2010.
Since then:
a) the less die hard family members ( ie all of them ) have been less enthusiastic about going.
b) they have been scheduling a lot of friday nights ( rather go home and watch , otherwise I have to go straight from work which rules out the family ).
c) the wonderful Sunday evening timeslot.

Only the friday nights would make a difference if I lived closer to the action.

It's at least hour and a half because of how s**t house Frankston line is run. Even if they ran it like clockwork after the game (they don't) the train to Frankston takes over an hour (more now because the Government lets Metro get away with it). If you live in Mt Eliza you can add a minimum 10 min drive and it just goes up from there.

My family drive to Gardiner because it knocks off 30 min of our trip and the trains run better and are less packed. We live on Westernport Bay 15-20mins from Frankston. When we used to go via Frankston it would routinely take close to 2 hours after a game and the train was still packed past Caulfield.

pointless discussion IMO.

First rule of marketing: Find you target audience.
Second rule: Find out what they want.
Third and by no means least: Make sure they have the money to pay and have shown a willingness to pay.

It's not class warfare, it's about cold hard business facts.

Hawthorn are just a s far away from Hawthorn, but their corridor is better served by traffic and transport to the G. and I suggest that the personal income levels are higher.

I buy a membership, unfortunately we play mostly at the same time I do on Sundays.... It's a huge trek from Chelsea and I canst be bothered.

Their are more supporters bayside and SE of the city than there is inner city by a mile....I reckon well under 10% of our supporter base is West of Moorabbin

if the JO plan doesn't come through id still like the Saints to push for a home in the Albert Park precinct, with Athletics Victoria, Aquatic centre and MSAC maybe were trying to get into bed with the wrong people.
Everything we need is there athletic tracks, swimming pools, indoor basketball stadium, football ovals, I'm sure all of these stadiums would love a bit of AFL money we just need somewhere to dump a big shed to get changed in and keep our footys, it could be the new Goshes Paddock and Westpac Center.
Do closed training sessions at Etihad and run the admin out of Morrabin.

The club would have detailed info on exactly where our supporters are located and what regions we need to target. One of the major polling companies did a report on the breakdown of AFL support in each suburb so this info is pretty easy to obtain.

OK Rule 1.
If you are in melbourne and you need to drive to the station, just keep driving all the way. We used to catch the train sometimes , mainly only the MCG or if it was a bigger than 1 car group, but now that its Myki with its anti casual user bias. Easy drive to the carpark near costco and walk from there.
( Casino used to be great, but they jacked the price up ).
Don't get me wrong, I love public transport, but I detest the public transport in melbourne. The more places I go to , the further down the list melbourne's public transport goes in my view.

thousands of country people from all clubs have lost the urge to go to footy, if you live further away then bendigo or ballarat there is no public transport for twilight or night games to get home, wont change anything where they play, or are based for country people. I go to one game a year now for the last few years, and stay overnight in Melbourne. my country membership is a donation to the saints. My preference would be moorabbin.

EXCLUSIVE

St Kilda's return home to the Junction Oval in a joint venture with
cricket been put firmly back onto the table by the Victorian
Government which has pledged to back a $59 million redevelopment of
the stadium and its surrounds.

In an announcement backed by Cricket Viictoria and the AFL the Premier
Dennis Napthine will promise his government will contribute $20
million to the project which had already attracted a football pledge
of $10 million from league chief Gillon McLachlan.

The project would create a permanent home for state cricket, forced to
play shield games outside Victoria this season, and make way for an
earlier AFL presence on the MCG from 2017. While Cricket Victoria boss
Tony Dodemaide was initially unwilling to join forces with the AFL the
extra government funding - Premier Napthine has doubled his initial
pledge - along with the support of Cricket Australia has seen the AFL
partnership gain momentum.

As revealed by Fairfax Media in May the multipurpose venture would see
the Saints move from the Linen House Centre in Seaford back to Fitzroy
Street training on a second oval with cricket using the main Junction
Oval ground. Premier Napthine has vowed to find a new tenant for the
Seaford training base, a base never truly embraced by St Kilda.

The two sports would share an elite training facility with the Old
Melburnians amateur Football Club relocating its home games to the
second ground.

The Junction Oval redevelopment has become a state election issue with
local labour member Martin Foley unwilling to back a shared facility
proposal. The Daniel Andrews Opposition has also pledged to redevelop
the ground but failed to unconditionally support the return of the
Saints.

The club has been working behind the scenes to win extra funding for
the development with AFL representatives holding talks in Canberra
over recent months in a bid to win the support of the federal
government. The joint venture has also won the support of the Port
Phillip Council.

Even with the state Libs putting in $20m it's still $19m short and that's after they cut $15m off the original $74m plan.

I'm guessing they organise their training around us? Any idea how many sessions they'd do each week?
Tuesday and Thursday at the clubs I've played at... Plus weights sessions if you're in the 1s...

It could work, but I really wouldn't want us to compromise too much to make it happen.

My main worry is that we move from one sub par facility in a bad location to a sub par facility in a good location and I'm not sure I see the point in that. The reduction from the $74m originally costed plan to $59m by the Libs scares me a fair bit because something had to go for the price to come down that far.
If we are going to make the move we need to make sure this will be a location we can call home for the next 25+ years so we need plenty of space to grow and enough top end facilities to accommodate all the interested parties without getting in each others way.

Interesting parts of that:

The Coalition will pledge $20 million for the project with Cricket Victoria and the AFL each adding $10 million.

Remaining funding will come from the Federal Government, Port Phillip Council, St Kilda and sponsors gathered by the AFL.

Labor has promised $25 million to upgrade Junction Oval if it wins the election.

St Kilda Football Club president Peter Summers said Saints fans would be “rapt’’.

The funding might not be a big issue if the the feds come to the party (they'd previously said no) but all this still relies on the Libs winning the election. Hopefully Labor upgrades their plan to match. Hell, all they have to do is say they will commit the $25m they are already in for to the joint venture instead of just a cricket only thing.
