Gippsland Power's Sam Skinner follows mentor Leigh Brown

Not only does 197-centimetre draft prospect Sam Skinner possess versatility to match his coach's, but the teenager has been told they are alike as people.

"Browny, especially over the past two years, I've been pretty close to him," Skinner says. "We're the same sort of people. He might even see a little bit of himself in me, and vice versa. I think that's why we get on so well.

An article on Sam from the local last night

Skinner has no qualms about heading north to the Sunshine State, where he will be joined by close friends from Vic Country and the Academy Josh Schache, who went at pick two to the Lions, and Rhys Mathieson.

"We're all pretty close mates so it's going to be good heading up there and having those people to sort of support each other, it'll be a little group inside the group," Skinner said.

Pre-2015 from Paige Cardona:

Sam Skinner
Gippsland Power
Key Forward
Height: 195cms, Weight: 87kgs, DOB: 29/05/1997

A gifted key tall, Sam Skinner is explosive, agile and is an athletic beast that teams have struggled to find a match up for at TAC Cup level, particularly when played forward. The rangy key forward however, also found a home at full back in game one of the National Championships, doing a number on the equally athletic Darcy Moore, taking him completely out of the game. From there, it was a string of hot form and a fine balancing act spending time at both ends of the ground, kicking goals at one end and then stopping them at the other. The former Under 16 Vic Country MVP is part of a new-age bread of key tall’s who are equally adept at both ends of the ground. For Skinner, he is ultra-clean below his knees, is a strong overhead mark, has a terrific natural leap and bodies up nicely as a defender, rarely giving away an advantage. Averaged seven disposals at 74 per cent disposal efficiency, including two marks, three tackles over three games.

Hard to take it seriously tbh, as Paige writes as if everyone is a superstar. Although, do like the bit about thaking Darcy Moore completly out of the game.

Very true. But obviously was in calculations by many to be a high pick through 2013 / 4 - with his ACL early in 2015.

Checking In With Our Draftees

Sam Skinner: Has a great attitude on his road to recovery from a knee reconstruction. Has worked on strengthening his legs and is slowly increasing his running volume and will commence agility work next week.

Evans has been elevated as a replacement for injured first-year player Sam Skinner and is now in contention to face the Cats. Evans was recruited to the Lions from Bendigo with the Club's first selection in the 2014 AFL Rookie Draft, pick 4 overall. Skinner has been placed on the Lions' long-term injury list and is on track to return in Round 12.

Skinner Inks New Deal

Promising key-defender Sam Skinner has re-signed with the Brisbane Lions until at least the end of 2018.

Skinner joins fellow 2015 NAB AFL Draftee Eric Hipwood in inking a new deal despite a year still to run on his contract.

Skinner was drafted from Gippsland Power at pick No. 47 and at 197cm his versatility allows him to not only impact as a key defender but also forward and in the ruck.

He played two matches at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, averaging nine possessions and 4.5 tackles, before injuring his knee (ACL reconstruction) playing for Vic Country – ending his 2015 season.

Skinner is now in the final stages of his rehabilitation with the 18-year-old on track for a return to football in June.

"We’ve been exceptionally impressed with Sam’s dedication and enthusiasm as he begins his AFL journey," said Brisbane Lions General Manager of Football Matthew Francis.

“Despite arriving at the Club injured, in his first season he has shown outstanding professionalism, character and commitment to building a career in the AFL.

“We see this extension as just reward for his effort.”

I got a feeling we will see this kid this year. Although i hope not as that means we may have had an injury to a key player. But leppa likes players to make their debut so they can see what they need to get up to.

I think it's more realistic to assume he'll only be playing reserves this year as a first year key position player coming off a knee reconstruction who'll only be ready playing by June but stranger things have happened.

Lions List Changes
TIn other list news, Sam Skinner has been transferred from the Long-Term Injury List back to the Club’s Primary List. Billy Evans who was elevated in replacement of Skinner will return to the Rookie List.

Skinner, who was recovering from an ACL rehabilitation, completed the minimum eight week requirement. He will play his first game since last May in the Lions’ Reserves on Saturday in Canberra.

Leigh Brown was on SEN today and was glowing in his praise of Sammy.

Word for word I cannot recall but it was along the lines of:

1. Primarily a KPD with capabilities to flow forward as required.
2. Super athletic for his size
3. A bit of mongrel about him

Really hoping this kid gets a game at some stage in 2016 :thumbsu:
Pardon my ignorance but what's the connection between Leigh Brown and Sam?
