Hi Footy fans...

This past weekend was a historic occasion for South Australian football. This year would be the last time that the Thomas Seymour-Hill Trophy would be fought for on the turf of AAMI Stadium. For 40 years, it was the home of SA footy. Forty premiership playoffs, numerous State of Origin clashes with the Big V and of course, the advent of the Adelaide Crows and the big move of the Port Adelaide Football Club to the Australian Football League. The South Australian National Football League has weathered the storms to take its place as the most respected competition outside the national league, but now a new future beckons as old differences will be cast aside for the good of South Australian sport as football and cricket find themselves back together from next year at the new and improved Adelaide Oval... but until then, there was still one more match for Football Park to host.

Welcome to the final Wrap-Up for the year... the 2013 SANFL Grand Final.

The Redlegs have been a juggernaut over the last two seasons. In 2012, they took the flag with very little resistance, overcoming the Bloods to take their 28th senior premiership. Before that, their last hurrah was 1997, where they hammered their arch-enemies Port Adelaide. Between those two victories was nothing, with only a couple of Grand Final appearances in between with losses to the Magpies in 1999 and then a heartbreaking six-point loss to the all-conquering Bulldogs outfit in 2010. But back-to-back successes have been even more rare for the boys in red & blue, the last time they saw such feats was back in the early half of the 20th century. It was the 1922 and 1923 seasons that saw Norwood take two flags in succession, something never repeated by the men of The Parade. This season would see them in the best position to do so, the Redlegs copping just three losses from all their 2013 outings prior. Coach Nathan Bassett has endured the lows of the previous seasons, runners-up in 2010 and a Preliminary Final loss in 2011 would help shape his now powerful outfit.

The Roosters... they've had their chances over the last few seasons, even had a Grand Final appearance in 2007 where, just as Norwood did three years later, succumbed to the Bulldogs rampage. Their last day of glory was back 22 years ago in the infamous 1991 premiership decider where they hammered -- almost literally in some cases -- the Bloods in what became known as the 'bloodbath' Grand Final. The red & whites were a feature in last year's finals as well, they would even have the rare honour of disposing of the Bulldogs not only in that finals series but in this year's as well. Which brings us to the next point, how the hell did they make it this far? After finishing the regular season in horrid fashion with no wins from their final five games, they seemed to have only a snowball's chance in making it to the big dance after being seeded into the Elimination Final. Well... three straight sudden-death matches later and the Roosters would find themselves getting their shot at the title, what better send off could coach Josh Francou get? The matches between the two sides this season would see them share the spoils, they played just twice in the regular season with the Roosters taking the Round 6 match at Prospect and the Redlegs winning at Coopers Stadium in Round 23. As for the last time they butted heads in a premiership match, you have to go back to the 1960 decider where the Roosters took the title by five points, North 14.11 (95) to Norwood 13.12 (90).

The people turned up in droves for this match, eventually the numbers reached over 36,000 SA footy-heads in the best turnout since 2010 and the closest to the 1999 decider's crowd number to front up to West Lakes. The first quarter was a low-scoring affair, the Redlegs' accuracy was rather average, the first three scores of the match being behinds, but the first goal would finally come in the 11th minute as Magarey Medallist Matt Thomas kicked truly. The Roosters finally answered at the 16th minute with their first major after Leigh Ryswyk goaled from just before the 50-metre arc with a favourable bounce. Another goal to Norwood at the 19th would extend their advantage, at the first change the Redlegs would have 2.5 to the Roosters' 1.2 on the board. It would take just one minute for the Redlegs to bag a goal upon resumption of play, Ben Warren scoring the Redlegs' third goal in a quarter where the Roosters would struggle to keep within striking distance of the defending premier. Norwood would continue to extend the deficit come the fifth minute, when Matt Fuller would unload from close to 60 metres away. It would take a further 10 minutes until Brett Zorzi would pop up for a goal, followed by a 21st minute major to Warren. Two goals in the dying minutes of the first half to North by Lewis Johnston and Nathan Gordon would bring the growing deficit back, but the Redlegs' quarter-time advantage was extended to 21 points by the half-time break. That last second goal was made possible after a foolish kick-away by Alex Georgiou after a free kick was paid to Jay Shannon.

When play resumed in the third quarter, the Roosters would go on the attack and started to make the Redlegs sit up and take notice a little bit. Only a little bit because goals from here were pretty hard to come by especially in that term of football. The Redlegs' chances went begging as they managed just three behinds for the entire period, the only goal going to the Roosters as Daniel Stewart scored at the third minute. A further five behinds to the Roosters would bring the gap back to 13 points, which suggested that perhaps a belter of a final term would be on the cards. But unfortunately this would not be the case, after Ben Jefferies took advantage of a bad handball prior to the three minute mark and goaled it was the kickstart the Redlegs needed. Mitch Grigg would add to the pain at the 10th minute, followed by another Warren special at the 18th as the Redlegs strangled the life out of the Roosters and kept them all but out of scoring range. The final nail would come from the boot of Thomas, goaling just shy of the 25th minute. Norwood's 4.4 to North's lousy single behind would hand the Redlegs their 29th premiership, also handing the Roosters another unwanted stat in the fact that they not only lost the first match at Football Park, but also the last by 40 points. Mitch Grigg was named best for Norwood by their staff, but it would be Brett Zorzi that would take out the Jack Oatey Medal with his 20 disposals, a goal and six clearances. North would name acting captain Todd Miles as their standout.

EAGLES TAKE OUT RESERVES AND JUNIOR TITLES
Woodville-West Torrens have bagged the Reserves and Under-18 premierships after defeating Glenelg and North Adelaide respectively. In the first of two low-scoring matches, the Eagles managed to turn around a poor start and took advantage of a horridly inaccurate Tigers attack. A final term run of four goals to 2.1 would see the Eagles take the Reserves flag by six points with Byron Sumner winning the Bob Lee Medal. The Macca's Cup would be a back-to-back occasion for the Eagles, withstanding a second half attack by the Roosters to win by 14 points and Malcolm Karpany winning the Alan Stewart Medal as best on ground.

So that's another year finished. But are there some clouds on the horizon for the SANFL? Just what are the Crows going to bring to the table? What about the Magpies? Their most staunch supporters have up and left, will the Power faithful take their place eagerly? There are many more questions that can be asked of those two... but it will have to wait.

So until next year... see you next season.

NORWOOD FOOTBALL CLUB -- 2013 SANFL Premiers

Just want to say cheers for the weekly wraps. Great way to keep up with SANFL footy.

Great GF crowd. I always wonder why we don't hold our GF in the WAFL after the AFL. Seems to work for you guys. We only had 20,000 for ours and that was between West Perth and East Perth . The weather was s&^t but was still expecting more.
