Hi Footy fans...

As we come up to the first bye weekend of the year, it's that time of year when interstate football is thrust into the limelight at senior and junior level. We got a sneak peak at the potential future stars of SANFL football and perhaps the next generation of AFL recruits with an expanded National Under-18 Championship series, with six home and away matches instead of the original three. As for the seniors, the best of our competition will pull on the red jumper to take on the old rivals across the border in Big V territory. There was still a couple of days before the final team was finalised... so from this past weekend, what squad members demonstrated the hunger, the desire and the passion needed by the boys and the men to represent the best state league in Australia? Stay tuned.

Welcome to the Round 8 edition of the SANFL Wrap-Up.

The first game to be covered in this week's blog takes us up The Parade to the Coopers Stadium for some Friday Night Mayhem between the Redlegs and the Eagles. The 2013 matches between these two was a tit-for-tat affair, with the victories coming for the visiting side on both occasions -- the Eagles winning at Norwood in Round 4 and the 'Legs at Woodville in Round 22. From the previous 13 encounters, the Redlegs have won eight to the Eagles' seven. Despite their win against the Crows last week, the Redlegs for all intents and purposes haven't threatened anyone above them since their Round 1 win against Port and the Eagles were highly fancied for this one. However, the Redlegs were a handful for the Eagles early on in the evening, as both sides kicked 4.1 each to start the night's proceedings. The second term was comparably dull in terms of scores, inaccuracy sneaking into the two camps as behinds made created a deficit going into the half-time break. Norwood would hold a one-point lead at this point after they added 1.3 to the Eagles' 1.2. The Redlegs seemed to be well in control when play resumed, getting out to a 16-point lead part way through the third term, but the Eagles would bag the next five goals and two behinds. Continued inaccuracy by the Redlegs in that quarter saw them kick 2.5 as the visitors took a 14-point lead at the final change. The home side made a desperate run at the Eagles in the final quarter, but 3.3 wouldn't be enough in the end, the Eagles' 1.4 would be enough to secure them a three-point victory. Luke Jarrad was named best afield for the Eagles, while the Redlegs named Sam Baulderstone as their best.

Saturday afternoon football now takes us over to Richmond, where the City Mazda Stadium played host to the Seven television clash between the Bloods and the Tigers. The Bloods completed a hat-trick of victories against the Bays in mid-2013, tearing Glenelg apart to the tune of 74 points at Tiger-land. The Tigers' last win against Westies was back in early 2012 at Gliderol Stadium, as for winning at Richmond they managed to nick one in late 2011 by two goals. Both sides sit outside the top five, the Bloods closer to the five than the Tigers, who have the unwanted position at the foot of the table. The Bloods first quarter would no doubt puzzle the home faithful, a heavily inaccurate opening term saw Westies kick 3.10 to the Tigers' 1.1 to take a 21-point lead at the first change. Their inaccuracy didn't disappear in the second quarter, but it did improve somewhat as the Bloods kicked 5.8 to the Tigers' single goal as the deficit was stretched out to 53 points. Despite the inaccuracy riddled display in goal, the Bloods were running rampant all over the ground, the Tigers leaving their a good deal of opposition players free to do whatever they pleased. For the Bloods, this seemed more like a training drill and for the Tigers, a giant step backward. The pain would continue to mount in the third quarter, the Bloods finally bagging more goals than behinds as they added a further 6.2 to the Tigers' four goals to take the gap out to 67 points. Same old story for the Tigers in the end, another game to forget as Westies rammed through a further 7.3 to Glenelg's 2.2 as the final deficit blew out to 98 points. Jon Beech was voted best for the Bloods, while the Tigers named Scott Spriggs as their standout.

While all this was going on, the second match of the afternoon was underway at the Playford Alive Oval in Elizabeth where the Bulldogs faced the Double Blues. The Bulldogs have had the better of the Blues for the previous four games, the last encounter in the final round for the 2013 season saw the Dogs take a rare victory at Unley by 25 points. The Blues last victory came at Oxford Terrace in 2012, a 31-point win in Round 10 of that season. A victory for the Blues at the Ponderosa has been far more rare, the last time they pulled such a feat off was back in Round 5 of 2010 in the Grand Final re-match. The Blues were in the best position for quite a while to do it this time around and take advantage of an undermanned Dogs side. Despite some inaccuracy in the opening term, the Blues would kick 2.4 for themselves and restrict the Bulldogs to just three behinds to take a 15-point lead at quarter-time. The Dogs managed to pull themselves off the deck in the second term, bringing the gap back to seven points by half-time after kicking 2.1 to 1.1. But that fightback would prove to be shortlived, the depth of the Bulldogs coming into serious question as the Blues kicked a game-breaking seven goals in upon the resumption of play, another lowly three behinds to the Dogs saw the margin stretch out to 46 points. Sturt's victory would be inevitable now, the Bulldogs' final term saw them lift a couple of notches in efforts but peppering the goals willy-nilly would not reap full rewards. The Blues' 4.2 to the Dogs' 2.8 would see the visitors take a 52-point win. Ben Kane would go on to be voted best afield for the Blues, while the Dogs named Travis Schiller as their standout.

In the last Saturday afternoon game, we now come back toward the city and divert towards the Prospect Oval where the Roosters faced the Magpies. There have been 12 games between these two teams in the previous five seasons, with the Roosters taking eight wins to the Magpies' four. The last meeting was quite the humiliating one for the 'Pies, the Roosters snapping Port in half with a 73-point hammering at Prospect in Round 16. The Magpies of 2014 are a far different outfit, for the obvious reasons that we've gone on about for a while now. The Roosters on the other hand, are lurking around outside the five but were dealt a blow last week by the Eagles. Those expecting the Magpies to burst forth from the blocks were about to be surprised though, that burst never came when play commenced as the Magpies accuracy was a bit off. They scored 2.4 to the Roosters' 1.3, the 'Pies up by seven points at quarter-time. Port did steady the ship a little in the second quarter, scoring 4.3 to North's 2.3 as the visitors headed into the long break with a 19-point lead. The poor kicking on goal on Port's behalf would return with a vengeance in the third term, keeping the Roosters in the game. The Magpies still managed to stretch their advantage a little, a gap of four goals the deficit at three quarter-time, but 2.7 to 2.2 was an effort that the Port faithful weren't looking to see. The Roosters wouldn't give up hope, but the Magpies matched pretty much all North's scoring efforts for that final term. Port scored 4.3 to North's 4.1 to leave Menzies Crescent with a 26-point win, but possibly exposing themselves as human after all to the rest of the competition. Steve Summerton was named best for the Magpies, while the Roosters voted in Nick Amato as their best on ground.

The final match for the weekend now brings us to the Hickinbotham Oval in Noarlunga for some Sunday afternoon action as the Panthers faced the Crows. Any kind of history between the Panthers and the previous incarnation of the Adelaide Football Club is, just as it was with other clubs that were around during the late 19th century, largely unknown. If they did happen to butt heads, it would have been during the inaugural league season of 1877 which South took the title as well as the 1886 season where the first AFC won the flag. This was a match that would be watched by fans of the other clubs for all the wrong reasons, as South was the other club that voted against Adelaide entering the competition just as Centrals did, who would go down to the Crows in Round 3 and many conspiracy theorists in SANFL fans circles expected them to do it again. An evenly fought first term greeted the fans that turned out, the Panthers taking a quarter-time lead of one point after kicking 3.2 to the Crows' 3.1. The arm-wrestle continued in the second quarter, a further point added to the first break deficit going into the half-time break after the Panthers scored 4.2 to 4.1. But in inexplicable fashion, the Panthers went flat in the third quarter as the Crows piled on some major punishment. Adelaide would bang through 9.4 to the Panthers lousy three behinds, next thing you know the Crows were ahead by 53 points at three quarter-time. It was as if a heavy vehicle just ran through the South camp! The Panthers did make a last ditch desperate run at the Crows, but even though they kept the visitors to just 1.2, South's 6.4 would not get them too close in the end. Adelaide would finish the day with a 21-point win, their second victory of the season. Brent Reilly was named best for the Crows, while the Panthers voted in Tom Fields as their best.

JUNIOR CROWEATERS BEGIN TITLE DEFENCE WITH VICTORY
The 2014 AFL Under-18 National Championships kicked off this past Saturday at AAMI Stadium, South Australia getting off to great start with their 31-point victory against Western Australia to start their title defence. The Croweaters put the Sandgropers to the sword early on, starting the day by bagging five goals to one in the opening term, then a further four goals to three in the second. The third term continued the trend, a further four goals to two with only the final quarter effort the afternoon's black mark on an otherwise satisfying performance. Ryan Burton of North Adelaide was the only multiple goal kicker for the afternoon, but it was Double Blue Dean Gore that was named as best afield for SA.

So next weekend... its time to take on the old enemy, its state league against state league as the best of two state competitions collide and local rivals become staunch allies on both sides of the fence and the border.

2014 STATE LEAGUE REPRESENTATIVE MATCH
Saturday May 31 @ 1:10pm EST

Victoria vs. South Australia; North Port Oval, Port Melbourne VIC

The match will be broadcast live on ABC TV in Adelaide from 12:30pm.

So until next weekend... see you at the Footy!

I thought Port played valiantly to win the game with only one interchange player after Renouf and Heath did their knees within the first 10 minutes of the match. If you listened to 5RPH's call you'd think it was the other way round.

Go the mighty red jumper (that many people including David Penberthy (who?) think has been out of use since 1990) on Saturday!

I find it somewhat refreshing that the RPH guys 'call it as it is' regarding the Power reserves, and don't toe the party line like the rest of the Adelaide media does.
