Hi Footy fans...

A subject of much discussion recently was a new record in the domain of Australian football matches coached at the top level. This past weekend, Michael Malthouse surpassed Jock McHale as the longest serving coach in the VFL-AFL at 714 games. But what about in Australian football itself? Before the national revolution of 1990, the individual state leagues were as top level as it could be. Other coaches have surpassed that record and then some. There's even those that were crossing state borders before there was a national competition. What about Jack Oatey's 777-game record with the Redlegs, Westies and the Double Blues for 10 SANFL titles? Or Haydn Bunton Junior's state-hopping 728 games between SA and the WAFL? Yes, the aforementioned figures are in the Hall of Fame, but aren't exactly given too much mention in AFL media circles and you would swear that with all the attention given to the achievement by Malthouse that neither Oatey or Bunton never existed. Which begs the question that SA-based football media figure Mike Rucci posed... "When is a record a record in Australian football?"

Welcome to the Round 5 edition of the SANFL Wrap-Up.

First up in this weekend's wrap, we head to the inner eastern suburbs for some Friday Night Mayhem at Coopers Stadium in Norwood where the Redlegs hosted the Tigers. The 'Legs got back on their feet quickly last weekend after a dismal showing against the Eagles, defeating the Magpies on Anzac Eve in the wet. The Tigers on the other hand, could consider themselves lucky to get a point after the lights went out at the Bay to force an early finish and a draw against the Crows. But they still haven't won a match for 2015, and against the reigning premiers were always going to find this night difficult. An inaccurate first quarter by the Redlegs would see them kick 4.4 to the Tigers' 2.2, giving the hosts a 14-point lead at the first change. That inaccuracy would continue to pose some problems for the 'Legs in the second term, but they were still able to make the deficit larger by the long break. They added a further 4.5 to Glenelg's three goals to end the first half with a 25-point buffer. When play resumed, it was shootout time as both sides booted four goals each. The Tigers' four additional behinds to the Redlegs' three would make the three quarter-time gap just four goals, but as has been the case so many times before they didn't have anything left over to continue the fight. The Redlegs would keep the visitors to just 1.1 in the final term, adding a further 4.4 to their tally to take a 45-point win, which could have been far worse given the tally of scoring shots taken! Norwood would name Matt Panos as their best afield, the Tigers voted in Sam Lonergan as their best.

Next up its back to the traditional Saturday afternoon timeslot which takes us down to Alberton Oval for the "Battle of the Birds" between the Magpies and the Eagles. A lot has been said about the Magpies' AFL-listed depth lately and after last week's loss to the Redlegs, some are now saying that perhaps its not all "Power-ful" as some may believe. That was about to be put to the test against an Eagles outfit that has made the competition sit up and take notice after they downed the premiers in Round 3 and then ended their Elizabeth hoodoo last weekend. The first quarter was rather dull, even though there wasn't a game-changing wind to speak of and clear skies, both sides found it hard going with both sides managing one goal each. A single behind to the Eagles was the difference at the first change. The Eagles were brought to a stop in the second quarter though, but despite the Magpies keeping the visitors scoreless their inaccuracy on goal kept the door wide open. Port kicked 3.4 to take a 21-point lead by the long break. In astonishing fashion however, the Eagles returned the favour somewhat in the third term, restricting the Magpies to just one goal and kicking 5.2 for themselves to re-take the lead. At the final change, the Eagles were leading by five points. Slowly but surely, the Eagles picked their spots and kept the Magpies at arm's length for the rest of the clash. They added 3.4 to their tally, allowing the home side to add just 1.4 to take a 17-point win and the premiership points back up to Woodville. Former Crow Jared Petrenko was named best afield for the Eagles, while the 'Pies named Thomas Logan as their standout.

While all this was going on, the other Saturday arvo match takes us to Unley, where the Double Blues faced the Roosters at the Peter Motley Oval. The last three encounters between these teams have all been Sturt victories, including the last match at Unley where the Blues took a 19-point win. The Roosters haven't had much to crow about lately, except against Adelaide in Round 2 -- bad joke yeah I know -- but losses to South and Port in consecutive weeks have seen the red & whites take up seventh spot on the ladder only by percentage atop the equally poor performing Bulldogs... and it wasn't going to get better today. The match began with the Blues having an inaccurate first quarter, they kicked 2.4 to the Roosters 1.2 to lead by eight points at the first change. It was from here that the Blues began to rip into the Roosters, who have been ravaged with injury after injury. In the second quarter the Blues booted 6.1 to North's 4.2 to extend their advantage to 19 points by the half-time break, but when play resumed it was about to get worse. The third quarter was the game breaking term for Sturt, ramming home 7.1 to the Roosters' 2.4 to blow the gap out to 46 points by the final break. The final quarter put the icing on the cake for the Blues, adding a further 7.4 to North's five goals without a miss as the home side romped home to a 62-point win. Angus Kurtze would be voted best afield for Sturt, while the Roosters named Mitch Clisby as their best.

Later that night, the lights shone bright at Noarlunga... but only temporarily. Once again, night lighting issues were in the spotlight -- nyuk nyuk nyuk... -- and it forced the match between the Panthers and the Crows to be played the following morning at Hickinbotham Oval. There wasn't anything released about the crowd figure from this match, but by some accounts, only a fraction of the 1372 that turned up on Saturday night would return 16 hours later in a disastrous weekend in public relations. Many were probably sfellowing at the fact that once again, the opposition was the Crows and that "Power" wasn't with them... nudge-nudge, wink-wink. But anyways, there was a match to be played despite all this, the Panthers started off best as they jumped ahead early to kick 5.4 to the Crows two behinds to lead by 32 points at quarter-time. The Crows would reel that deficit back however, bringing the gap back to just two goals by the half-time break after bagging 7.3 to the Panthers' 4.1 in the second term. From here, both teams scratched and clawed for everything they got, turning the game into an arm-wrestling match for the second half. The Crows managed to scratch off a few points from the Panthers' lead during the third term, both sides kicked three goals each but three behinds to one in Adelaide's favour saw South's lead brought back to 10 points going into the final quarter. But this wasn't going to be the Crows day, which would later be further soured by their AFL side's loss in the Showdown. The Panthers peppered their goal for little reward, but their 1.6 to 1.2 would be enough to secure a 14-point victory and stay near the top of the ladder. Souths would name Nick Liddle as their best on ground, while the Crows named Sam Kerridge as their best.

In the final match for the weekend, the Seven sport boffins needed a lead-in match on TV for the Showdown so they headed over to City Mazda Stadium in Richmond where the Bloods were hosting the Bulldogs. The Bloods had their winning run halted by the Blues last week, but the Doggies weren't faring much better themselves after copping it sweet from the Eagles on their home deck. Richmond hasn't been a happy hunting ground for the Bulldogs for a few years now, from the last five visits to the ground they have won just once back in 2013. Even worse for the Bulldogs, they would still be without a dominant forward and one of their co-captains. Both sides found it hard to get through the big sticks in the opening term, inaccuracy becoming a problem early on. Centrals took a one-point lead at quarter-time, 1.5 to 1.4. The second term was far more plentiful with goals, the two sides trading blows on the scoreboard but it was West that came out of the term better with their 5.4 to the Dogs' four goals without a miss. Unfortunately for the Dogs fans that turned up, this was to be another match where one quarter of football seemed to go missing. Despite more inaccuracy, Westies kept the Dogs to just one goal whilst adding 4.7 to take a 34-point lead at three quarter-time. That would end up being the final margin, both sides kicked 3.2 to finish the match. Just think what the result would have been, just as Norwood should have on Friday! Jason Porplyzia was named best for the Bloods, while the Dogs named Chris Jansen as their best, after spending a little more time on field after the match and then a long team meeting behind closed doors.

Was certainly a strange night at Noarlunga on Saturday. I can understand why the SANFL made the decision they did, however I think the game should have gone ahead and if the lights had failed again South should have been made to forfeit. As for Sunday, "meagre" would be a polite way of describing the crowd that turned up, boosted by a couple of dozen Ravens die-hards.

Baulderstone stiff not to be chosen in the initial state squad. Looks decent overall though.
