Hi Footy fans...

There's an old saying... talk is cheap. At the end of 2013, the SANFL landscape was on the cusp of real change with the addition of the Crows to the league and the Magpies becoming the Power's reserves side. People from different angles said three things were going to happen, but only one of those details never eventuated. The Adelaide Football Club was confident of bringing their fans to SANFL games. That confidence was sorely misplaced as Crows fans have largely kept themselves confined to the creature comforts of the Adelaide Oval. The other two details would come to pass, much to the detriment of the competition. The first being that the Magpies' supporters group, that remained loyal to the SANFL branch of the Port Adelaide club, would disband in protest and will probably never return. The second, the admission of the AFL reserves teams would be railed against by many SANFL supporters. This has indeed happened and attendances have slumped. Has the rebellion achieved its objective? Only time will tell... over to you Olsen and company. Talk, in this instance, has been far from cheap.

Welcome to the Round 6 edition of the SANFL Wrap-Up.

The first match of the weekend takes us down The Parade to Norwood, where the Coopers Stadium lights shone bright for some Friday Night Mayhem between the Redlegs and the Crows. The Redlegs took the points from the both of the two games against Adelaide last season, with 31 and 55-point victories in Rounds 7 and 18 respectively. The Crows have yet to taste victory this season, and going by the previous two weeks many would be forgiven for thinking the lights might go out again for a third week in a row. Fortunately for those that turned out this week, that wasn't going to happen. However the wet weather would make ball handling an extremely delicate art-form. The Crows managed to get on the board first, but by the end of the first quarter it was the Redlegs with a two-goal lead after they kicked 4.3 to 2.3. The second term saw both sides struggle to do any real damage on the scoreboard, but the Redlegs did manage to extend their lead to 17 points by the half-time break after they added 2.2 to the Crows' 1.3. The Redlegs' third quarter was pretty much the game-breaker thanks to the conditions, only inaccurate kicking would give the Crows any hope of a last ditch run. Norwood kicked 4.5 to 2.1, at three quarter-time they were ahead by 33 points. The final term was to be as dour as the second term was, not much scoring to be had here as the Redlegs sealed the deal with their 2.5 to the Crows' 1.2 to take a seven-goal win. Sam Baulderstone was named best for the 'Legs, while the Crows named Luke Carey as their best afield.

The action now shifts to the traditional Saturday afternoon, the first match of the day finds us at the Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval in Woodville where the Eagles hosted the Tigers. The two matches of 2014 both went the way of the Eagles, with a 50-point victory at Oval Avenue in Round 6, then a 43-point win away at the Bay in Round 12. Now here's an interesting stat for those playing at home... found this one in the Budget, the Eagles' first two draws as a merged team were against the Tigers and both were at Woodville. Interesting, eh? The Eagles have been on quite a roll lately, after a horrid start against West they have made everyone else take notice with wins against the 2014 premiers and the runner-ups and they wanted to go 4-1 for 2015. The first quarter was a heavily inaccurate one on goal for both sides. Although the Tigers had the first four scoring shots, they were nothing compared to the Eagles' first term effort where they kicked 5.5 to 1.4 to take a 25-point lead into the first change. The second term wasn't as score-laden, but the Eagles were still able to extend the gap to 39 points by the long break after they added 3.3 to 1.1. When play resumed, the Eagles faithful were given a bit of a shock, the on-field machine seemed to sputter in the third term as the Tigers came rushing back into the fight as they scored 4.2 to three behinds to reduce the deficit to 16 points going into the final stanza. But the Eagles weren't going to allow this one to slip, they would keep the visitors at arm's length for the rest of the game and would post a 23-point victory after a 4.2 to 3.1 final term. Matthew Goldsworthy was named best afield for the Eagles, while the Tigers voted in Matthew Snook as their best.

The next Saturday arvo match takes us up north, the Playford Alive Oval in Elizabeth hosting the match between the furthest divided teams in the competition -- over 50 kilometres -- in the Bulldogs and the Panthers. Last season, these sides went tit-for-tat at each other's stomping grounds, with the Round 4 match ending a long-standing hoodoo for South Adelaide. They took an eight-point win at the Ponderosa, where they hadn't won a game for 15 years. The Dogs however, would answer back later in the season with a 10-point win at Noarlunga in Round 11. On the all time ledger, these sides have only ever drawn once. This was the Seven TV match for the weekend, and it started off with the Panthers controlling much of the first term as they kicked 3.1 to the Dogs' two goals to lead by seven points at quarter-time. Centrals would hit back in the second term though, bringing the gap back to just two points by half-time after they kicked three goals without a miss to the Panthers' 2.1. There was not too many highlights in this game, it was purely scrappy with errors on both sides creating headaches for the respective coaches. The scratching and clawing game continued when play resumed as both sides struggled to find real scoreboard impact. The Dogs finally got in front of the Panthers in the third term, adding 2.1 to their tally against South's 1.1 to lead by just four points at three quarter-time. The Panthers looked as if they bagged the match winner late in the final term as they camped the play deep in their attack for extended periods of the quarter, kicking 1.4. But a last minute goal to the Dogs would be the final play for the afternoon, a draw giving both sides a point each on the ladder. Justin Hoskin was named best for the Dogs, while the Panthers named Xavier Gotch as their standout.

Now we head into the outer western suburbs, the fourth match for the round takes us to Alberton Oval where the Magpies faced the Double Blues. Like most of the games in this round, the corresponding matches of last season didn't see a share of the spoils. The Magpies would take out both games in 2014, with a 50-point win at Alberton in Round 6, followed by a 20-point win at Unley in Round 12. This time around the Magpies haven't been totally dominating lately, two losses in as many weeks while the Blues have had better luck with wins against Westies and the Roosters in the same period. One of these streaks would either continue or be broken. The Blues got on the front foot early on, they kicked 5.1 to 2.1 in the first term to be up by three goals at quarter-time. That lead wouldn't last long though, despite some inaccuracy they would be up by two goals at the long break after kicking 4.6 and keeping the Blues scoreless for the second quarter. This see-sawing trend would continue after half-time, the Blues doing some restricting of their own to keep the 'Pies to 1.3 whilst adding five goals without a miss to their tally to lead by nine points at three quarter-time. Unfortunately the Blues couldn't keep up the intensity in the final term, the Magpies keeping the hearts in the mouths of supporters as they chipped away at the gap with several skewed shots. Port's 3.5 to the Blues' single goal would see them winners by eight points. Sam Gray was voted Port's best afield, Sturt named Kory Beard as their best on ground.

In the final match for the weekend, we head toward the inner western suburb of Richmond, where City Mazda Stadium was the setting for the clash between the Bloods and the Roosters. This was another match-up that had only one side dominate the other during the 2014 season, the Roosters taking all the points against West with a 15-point win at Richmond in Round 3 and then an 87-point hammering at Prospect in Round 10. If that wasn't bad enough, the Roosters were also responsible for dumping the Bloods from the 2013 finals race on their way to the Grand Final of that year. The Roosters would start off best, a single goal would separate the two teams at quarter-time with the scoreboard reading 3.3 to 2.3. But whoa, lets back-track a little... that hiding copped midway through last year. It was time that the Bloods returned the favour. From here, Westies controlled all, starting with the second term where they kept the Roosters to just 1.1 and booted 5.1 for themselves to take a three-goal lead into half-time. The Roosters were practically reduced to spectators from here, the Bloods went on the hunt and again restricted the visitors on the board. Westies added a further 6.3 to 1.2 to extend the deficit to 49 points. The final term would bring further punishment for North, kept to just two goals while the Bloods rammed home 7.5 and finished the match 13-goal victors. Jason Porplyzia justified his State selection with his best on ground nomination, while the Roosters named Alan Obst as their standout.

There was talk around many SANFL fan circles that they would walk if the AFL reserves were allowed in. Poor weather has been an issue, but it's looks as if a lot of fans have indeed left.

Real shame. You don't like to hear of things like this. Here's hoping faith in the SANFL is restored.
Wont be restored as long as the two invaders are in the comp.
I still attend every week because I love Norwood, grew up in the area as did my father and his father before that. This current shambles has tested my loyalty though and I have plenty of friends who have walked away, many have been going with me for 20-30 years. Its been a complete disaster and what makes it worse is our gutless delegate that went against the members wishes to vote them in.
Crowds will continue to drop off as the older generation pass away and what kids will ever grow up supporting a SANFL side?
