shaun higgins.

Carlton need some youth in their midfield, not another half fit ovverated plodder.

That would be a semi-relevant point if Higgins was a midfielder.

Bringing him in makes sense for a number of reasons. First and foremost his disposal is terrific and clearly Carlton needs to address that issue going forward. At 26 years of age he's also in a suitable age bracket considering the number of experienced players we have who are likely to be moved on in the next 18 months.

Unfortunately given your blind hatred of Carlton and your penchant for trolling the club I don't expect you to understand any of the above.

If you're going to troll, it'd be nice if you could at least try to come across as somewhat well informed.

Its not a matter of blind hatred for Carlton at all.....although lets take that as a given.....but its not blinding my judgement.

Its just that I dont believe hes a good fit. Carlton need youth and some raw pace. Hes definitely a midfielder who can play forward and kcik goals, only injury prevents him from playing that role though...hence being relegated to the flanks because he no longer has the pace and fitness to do what he could 3-4 years back.

I cant see what Higgins can do for them. There are probably plenty of clubs that it could consider a punt on him to be worthwhile.

Higgins has told one of the suiters (cough, norf, cough) he is a midfielder and only wants to go to a club that will play him in that position. Norf want him off half back. Whomever gets hims is so lucky to get such a team player..... Anywhoo - won't be our issue next year.

So getting Higgins means we can't get anyone else?

With Timmy on this one, as much as it pains me. We do need pace, skill and youth. He ticks one of the boxes. He's a nice player, we need more than that and can't afford to pay another player 400k+ to float around half forward. Would much rather leave alone, especially after his injury history.

That doesn't answer my question.

Why can't we get youth on top of Higgins?

It's not a case of one or the other. Especially considering Higgins is an FA.

It's like the idiots who say we can't go after Tom Mitchell because we need a forward. How does getting Mitchell prevent us from getting another player?

Is there a rule of teams only being able to bring 1 player in per off season I am unaware of?

We can get youth, however I would take the chance on developing some of our existing youth rather than spending 400k on a player who is silky but injury prone. The only way I could vaguely see it is if we offload Garlett and bring him in as a forward specialist, which he doesn't want.

Of course if Higgins would come at the cost of a younger prospect you would go with the younger. But hypothetically, given Higgins is a FA (so no trade required) he would be more handy than a 6th rd draft pick.

What we need to appreciate is - we have already lost 3 players (Duigan, Scotto & Bootsma). That's before any delistings.

What happens if we want to delist 4 or 5 (similar to last year) or even more?
That's 7 list spots minimum before trades. We don't want to end up having to use picks in the 90s or 100s in the draft.

Whilst I want us to load up on as many draft picks as possible in the first 3 rds, we don't have a lot of currency to deal with.

Carlton? This is beyond the pale. Re-sign him immediately.

I'm on the fence regarding keeping him or letting him go..
It's interesting that the GWS angle has died down they've been chasing him for over a year now. Rumour had it that he went up there last year for a tour when he was injured as well as catching up with Cameron in the offseason. I thought they would be still leading the charge.

Handy pick up if his body stays intact. Seems he may have it now under control.
Blues will have many elders moving on in the next 2 years and his leadership and skills will be valuable.
Obviously, if he did want to move to Carlton, the only sticking point would be the amount of money he is chasing???

I'd rather keep him and continue to move him where he's required then receive a compo pick. While Band 3 might be commensurate value from the perspective of other clubs, I think he's worth more to us than that in his various roles.

Shouldn't be a problem ;)

I'm not sure he's the answer for Carlton but he's in the right age bracket.

He's not a huge answer, but he's a damn decent player when his body is right. Still has another 100 or so games in him if holds up.
I like the idea
I agree. I'm keener on retaining him and playing him across half forward/on the ball because he's so classy and creative, but he might have his heart set on going. I doubt he'll be happy about spending some time in the reserves, even though his form warranted it.

He's not an answer, but with a number of retirements happening, he'd be a handy FA pick up instead of replacing players with 6th rd picks.

Am I right in thinking that as soon as word broke that he was holding off contract talks, he was dropped? He's not injured is he?

I would be shocked that Geelong show interest. He's class and all but id rather see us invest internally and back Thurlow, Hamling, Bews or hell even Boris to go around again.

Not what we need or really want…

Go Catters

Fair enough, can definitely see where you're coming from. Bit of work to do on the list and better to balance it immediately than roll the dice on players that wouldn't have been drafted otherwise.

He was dropped because he was very ordinary against Geelong and Melbourne, and, I'm assuming, 'wasn't doing the right things' (A Brendan McCartney favourite - if they ever release BMac dolls, that's what he'll say when you pull the string).
No, he's not injured, he's moved quite well down at Footscray.

I think maybe he just has his heart set on a new lease of life. Could be good for both parties. You have many young kids that need a good run at it.

Agreed. Particularly if their heart is in it - and I don't like having a go at Missy, but sometimes he can seem indifferent.

I'd rather give Darley and Johannisen a shot off half-back and see what Hrovat, Honeychurch and Hunter can do at half forward. The midfield speaks for itself.

Totally agreed!
We need to stem the bleeding that will happen in the next few years while still bringing in the kids.
Higgins for just cash is a sensible move for us imo

It's a shame I can already imagine the usual suspects posting about how we're ignoring our need for talls. Because apparently you can only trade in one player per year :p

Wait until we spend our top draft pick this year on another midfielder :p

Then again, these are the same people complaining that we selected Bontempelli at #4 instead of Tom Boyd
