End up watching the game?
Thoughts on hinchliffe

Do like. There's something to work with, size an issue but powerful, goes in hard, always looks to move the ball quickly and not allow the opponent to reset and has a crunching kick. Do like.

Skippos, injury aside, do you think Adelaide would look at Ryan Burton with their first pick. I have no doubt that a key forward would be very high on our list of priorities but ideally it would be a contested marking power forward to compliment Walker and Lynch who will probably be around for the next 6 or 7 years. Do you think Burton is too similar a player to these two given that we also have Ramsey on the rookie list (who hasn't proven anything yet but hasn't put a foot wrong so far)? It looks like there might be a number of outside mids available around that pick who might be a better fit. In which case we would probably take a punt a speculative forward/ruck with a later pick. I know you don't like these picks but unless we get our hands on pick 2 I don't see another option.

These slightly undersized key forwards who rely on their head for the game to dominate rather than their size seem to be safer bets than the 196cm+ "athletes" who go at similar picks. Do you think this is the case with Burton? And how has his injury affected this?

Thanks Skippos, like always I appreciate your insight.

It's a possibility but I doubt it. He's what we've already got. I equate selecting a speculative forward ruck with wasting a pick. But we are the best club at developing KPP talent in the league so if anyone could turn a project good, we will.

I do think, pending his recovery, that he'll make the grade. His injury is worrying but the talent is there, he's a jet.

More draftee videos

- added relevant over-agers who I had videos of last year - Capiron etc.
- added 19 player tapes from the metro v wa game
- added ~18 videos of players that crusha did - predominantly queensland academy kids but he's also done videos of perry, collins, lovell, weitering, francis, schache and cole which might be of use

There's also footage of petrevski-seton and gallucci not in that playlist. have a search and you'll find it.

What changed between Monday night and Wednesday night for Hibberd to go from outside the 85 to #23? I obviously agree, but it's a fair move.

I didn't watch the Tasmania game until yesterday evening, which helped, but primarily I had a discussion with someone whose opinion I place great stock in and has far more exposure to him than I.

Talent ID - especially at this level is a mixture of making assessments based on what you see and knowing who to trust on those you haven't been exposed to imo. So I'm happy to tail someone who knows their s**t until I get a wide enough sample to make my own assessment.

Doubt WC would be interested in Clark as he doesn't offer a huge point of difference. Being local may not be a plus as all our draft picks last season were from outside WA. I think WC will try and trade that pick for a Bennell, Yarran or Coniglio and if no trade eventuates, just take best available.

How does Schace compare to mccartin from last year? Who do you personally rate higher? Sorry if asked already I've kept up to date with this thread but I can't remember reading anything along those lines

Better, in my eyes.

McCartin was good but to me he was never a safe as houses type - though the least risky of last year's KPFs. As a player he was dominant in one dimension but limited in others, he was the kind of player you think might be a top 5-10 KPF in the comp but not the best, perhaps.

Schache I'm more confident in making the grade and not busting but also in having a higher peak. He's got more strings to his bow, he's taller, he's fitter, he's a better set shot, he's a better pack mark and he's slightly better below the knees. McCartin is better one on one and has better leading patterns.

Yeah cheers for that from my reading I wouldn't be surprised for Brisbane to need pick 1. I think last year proved that KPF will be taken high because they are so rare

If he finishes the season the way he played on Friday, he'll go top-10.

I think that's likely.

And I also think it's be a poor decision. The question mark is his age - he is relatively raw compared to everyone else with a year less development. A club may rightfully place more stock in him given how much younger he is than most KPFs who get drafted and wager that had he had 9 months more in the system he'd be better.

But based purely on what I'm seeing with him now he's a tall small. 4 contested marks on Saturday surprised me as I didn't really notice any physical marks. He's not someone who you can put at full forward and expect him to time his leads well and offer those repeat hard leads, he lacks that forward IQ - and he's not someone really straightens up your structure either. You can't bomb it long hoping that he's going to clunk the mark.

What he is is someone who works well between the arcs and beats most of the similar sized defenders at ground level but outsizes the smaller and more agile key defenders. He's got some real athleticism and that's exciting - but forwards, especially key ones are the one position where you can't get by as an athlete; you also need a high level forward IQ.

Right now I see him as that James Stewart type of player with a ceiling not dissimilar to Ben Griffiths.

How many SA guys look like getting drafted? Francis, Burton, Bonner and Partington surely certainties. Haysman, Snelling, Parella, Allen, Nunn, Tahana, Milera and Presbury chances too? Maybe even Markov getting rookied?

Around what pick range do you think they'll go at?

If you enjoy my work - follow me on twitter as I regularly yap on about the draft there!

I'm back again this year - except six weeks earlier! You can find last year's effort here. As always, happy to answer/explain/justify any questions/queries/feedback/statements about anything draft related. Hopefully I can provide another new perspective on how things are shaping up. This is my seventh year following the draft and the third year I've followed it very heavily. I'm based in SA but try to expose myself to the Victorian and WA prospects a little each year.

I don't particularly like calling it a phantom as these threads have become so much more than phantom drafts - personally, the phantom/mock drafting is a chore that I find a little pointless; it's not like anyone on here has any inside information so we're likely to be worse than EQ/Cal Twomey et al at projecting how the cards fall. However, Last year my phantom draft statistically considered the most accurate of all the amateur scouts - with only EQ and Cal Twomey recording a better hit rate. That said, trust them over me if you're looking for mail on who your club will pick! My strengths lie with identifying the talent, not projecting where they will go!

At the moment it's just power rankings. I'll edit in a top 20 mock later this week and start gradually doing profiles over the next 2-3 months. Last year I rewrote each profile three times and I'd like to avoid that this year!

I'm currently working on developing a draft website which I hope to launch in the near future. It's not going to be like BFGN/Mad Monday or any of the facebook pages/draft columns you've seen, instead I intend to model it on the American NBA style draft websites - very content heavy but concise and user friendly with videos and images. Not as many articles and reports but more individual scouting pages and numerical ratings for different skills (which I intend to incorporate into this thread!) - which I think the general public find much easier to digest than a paragraph explaining strengths and weaknesses. If this interests you shoot me a message as I'm keen to involve a few interested parties in the development!

Overview of the Draft:

Contrary to other draft followers, I think this is a good draft. If you're looking for a franchise forward perhaps it's a little weak barring Schache, but in every other regard I think it's excellent. It's Vic Country's best crop in a long time and I'm particularly bullish about SA's crop. Last year I wasn't but this year I think it's their best in a long time too (as you'll see from the power rankings. It's loaded with them). The strength of the crop very much rests on whether my assessment of the South Australian talent is correct or not. If I've overrated them, then it reverts back to an average crop. If you're looking for key defenders, small forwards or any type of midfielder - this crop is stacked with them. If you possess a top 20 pick, you're very likely to get a great piece to work around. I think the top 20 are relatively even, with the 21-30 range being a solid drop. In terms of depth - it does drop off a little after 35-40, but it's still got a bit about it and there will definitely be some gems to be found.
