Skippos why did you have Nick O'Kearney going that far back in your initial phantom, was it primarily a size sort of argument? Or do you think he has obvious weaknesses. Personally I rate him fairly highly got a lot of runs on the board.

I'm not a fan of undersized accumulators with poor disposal, and neither are clubs.

He doesn't really have any attributes which give him a point of difference to the other midfielders
and I certainly don't want our club to be taking him

We won't there are about 4-5 players that could be available at our pick that I'd take before him. Still think he'll go somewhere between 15-30 though.

not sure whether you are looking at kids to go in the 2016 draft but if so what do you reckon about Dylan Clarke from eastern ranges

If you enjoy my work - follow me on twitter as I regularly yap on about the draft there!

I'm back again this year - except six weeks earlier! You can find last year's effort here. As always, happy to answer/explain/justify any questions/queries/feedback/statements about anything draft related. Hopefully I can provide another new perspective on how things are shaping up. This is my seventh year following the draft and the third year I've followed it very heavily. I'm based in SA but try to expose myself to the Victorian and WA prospects a little each year.

I don't particularly like calling it a phantom as these threads have become so much more than phantom drafts - personally, the phantom/mock drafting is a chore that I find a little pointless; it's not like anyone on here has any inside information so we're likely to be worse than EQ/Cal Twomey et al at projecting how the cards fall. However, Last year my phantom draft statistically considered the most accurate of all the amateur scouts - with only EQ and Cal Twomey recording a better hit rate. That said, trust them over me if you're looking for mail on who your club will pick! My strengths lie with identifying the talent, not projecting where they will go!

At the moment it's just power rankings. I'll edit in a top 20 mock later this week and start gradually doing profiles over the next 2-3 months. Last year I rewrote each profile three times and I'd like to avoid that this year!

I'm currently working on developing a draft website which I hope to launch in the near future. It's not going to be like BFGN/Mad Monday or any of the facebook pages/draft columns you've seen, instead I intend to model it on the American NBA style draft websites - very content heavy but concise and user friendly with videos and images. Not as many articles and reports but more individual scouting pages and numerical ratings for different skills (which I intend to incorporate into this thread!) - which I think the general public find much easier to digest than a paragraph explaining strengths and weaknesses. If this interests you shoot me a message as I'm keen to involve a few interested parties in the development!

Overview of the Draft:

Contrary to other draft followers, I think this is an excellent draft. If you're looking for a franchise forward perhaps it's a little weak, but in every other regard I think it's excellent. It's Vic Country's best crop in a long time and I'm particularly bullish about SA's crop. Last year I wasn't but this year I think it's their best in a long time too (as you'll see from the power rankings. It's loaded with them). The strength of the crop very much rests on whether my assessment of the South Australian talent is correct or not. If I've overrated them, then it reverts back to an average crop. If you're looking for key defenders, small forwards or any type of midfielder - this crop is stacked with them. If you possess a top 20 pick, you're very likely to get a great piece to work around. I think the top 20 are relatively even, with the 21-30 range being more like the late first round types of previous years. In terms of depth - it does drop off a little after 35-40, but it's still relatively deep and there will definitely be some gems to be found.

Great Post Skippo, quite a lot of insight very impressive! Just a few quick questions.

Watched Parsons play on Sunday and thought he had it on a string, any chance he could move higher up the order as the year progresses? Looked silky smooth and a perfect height that with time could form into a strong bodied mid (eg. Bontempelli).

Secondly, how much do clubs look at disposals efficiency when making draft selections?

And following on from that, seen a bit of Will Sexton from the Falcons lately and looks a goer! Strong bodied back flanker that uses it exceptionally well on both sides and makes good decisions, could you offer any insight on him and any other players that might fit that halfback/small-med defender type?

Cheers and look forward to your updates!

Hi! Unfortunately I'm not going to be much help. Haven't had the exposure to the Victorians this year that I had at this time last year - this will change over the champs and after when I get across to watch some TAC. My assessments are based on the ones I've seen footage of or saw last year. Parsons is one of those - he was a little patchy for mine but the upside was there; a rough around the edges type that could potentially mould into a solid piece. From what I saw last year, your assessment seems fair, he had the scope to really develop into that. Reads the play well and seems a very natural footballer with some good spacial awareness. I'll be able to refine my evaluation as I get more exposure.

With regards to disposal efficiency - it's very conditional. Footskills and decision making is integral however the pure efficiency stat is borderline meaningless. It doesn't consider the situation a player was under when disposing - likewise it rewards conservative disposals. Jackson MacRae in an afl sense is a classic example, his efficiency is decent but the majority of his disposals are uncontested outside chips sideways or backwards or long bombs deemed effective by virtue of going over 40 metres to a contest.

Jade Gresham is one that comes to mind. He registers solid efficiency numbers but doesn't do that much damage by foot by virtue of some overly conservative disposals lacking damage.

To me, efficiency is best judged by the eye and not a number. Players who can hit targets semi regularly while under serious pressure get real bonus points for me, as do players who demonstrate excellent decision making and vision by foot. Obviously clubs want skills with their draftees but they'll decide who's skilled using far more than just efficiency.

As for Sexton, I haven't seen him so will reserve judgement, sorry! He's one I'm keeping an eye on; if your assessment is correct he certainly seems appealing as a prospect. For that small defender role the obvious one is Darcy Tucker who should go very high. Riley Bonner a medium sized defender who plays smaller than his size who I'm very big on. Stephen Tahana as a disciplined small defensive minded defender. They Thompson apparently played well down back this week and is someone I'm bullish about. Bruno Laguda is someone I believe presents excellent value if you're looking for a player like that, and Harry Cross and Thomas Cameron are also players who could be available late and are ones to watch in that role.

I rate Bonner but I have doubts he actually goes in the first round. Don't think clubs like to take his type early on, but he is one of the better performed players so far for mine. Like what he brings to the table for sure.

Thanks a heap! I'll be keeping a keen eye out on the champs and your updated draft!

If you want a key forward who isn't a stop gap you find them early or through alternative pathways. Look at this - I've listed all the forwards I can remember who are or were once blokes you could work with, not stop gaps. Pretty damning. None were 18 year olds selected after 43, and Goodes is an outlier with Tippett the next at 32. Darling only at 26 because of question marks regarding discipline too.

It's damming. If you want a number two forward who can ruck, you find them early too - and sometimes you've just gotta cut your losses and use your number one forward to do that, as Boyd bloody well can. Plenty of those busts above were number two forwards who could ruck. But those types fail, and there's no point picking someone to fill a need if they're increasingly likely to not make the grade.

In my phantom this year I intend to select kpfs early and that's it. The guys who are second round standard to me are actually late to rookie standard if numbers are anything to go by - you've what? Got a 5-10% chance of grabbing a Tippett or a Dawes? Not worth it. At this stage blokes like Allen, Weideman, Smith, McKay etc are all in that range where they're second round types but don't present value there. If, on draft day, none have proven themselves as first round types, then I don't see much point in them.

Gees Skippos you talk sense and back it up with some tangible evidence. Love your work, the time you must put in is incredible.

Skippos just put Schache in for Brisbanes pick, especially after todays 8 goal haul. Not concerned about who or what his opposition was as 8 goals is nothing to sneeze at.

Depending on where Brisbane finish I suspect they'll look into him with their first pick - if he's there. My mock (which will be updated within the next week) should reflect this.

Another update to the power rankings in post #1

- Aaron Francis rises to three. He's just that good. Seriously, seriously good.

- Josh Schache rises to four. I've been saying all season that I prefer him to last year's KPFs in Moore/McCartin/Wright so I'm not particularly sure why I didn't have him this high anyway. He mightn't have the powerful leading and one on one strength of Paddy Mc or the height, boot and up the ground game of Wright nor the agility and smarts of Moore but he's a safer bet for mine. All three last year had some serious ?s - I don't see that with Schache - you know what you're going to get and that's a high level power forward. These tall, strong, aerially dominant KPFs are traditionally safe bets provided they dominate at junior level and Schache has. I'm exceedingly confident he's going to make the grade.

- Matthew Kennedy confirms himself in the top 6. The more I see, the more I like. Luke Partington slides a little bit. He's still a gun but I'm not too sure he's as quick as I thought and his skills haven't progressed as hoped.

- Wayne Milera the big riser. The bloke's a star. Time stops around him, he works both ways and hard, he's composed, creative, smart, evasive - he really is the full package for that indigenous half forward that most salivate over.

- Collins and Gresham rise off the back of solid games, as does McKay. Crocker rises too - I wasn't particularly sold with him on Saturday until I realised he played 50% game time. For that, he was everywhere.

- Olekalns reclaims his rightful spot inside the top 30. The kid has got a lot to like.

- Mason Redman entes at 37. Really liked wht I saw; he's a nice height and his spacial awareness and forward IQ was excellent. Just found space in dangerous areas time and time again. He's an AFL player.

- Andre Parella rises. Which is surprising off 3 disposals but it's the way he played that impressed me. Andre's new to the game and his season to season AND week by week growth is impressive. If he continues at this rate he'll be a long term player, he really is a prospect.

- Nash Holmes rises to #39 - I just wanted a good game from him to justify my rating of him. Predicted him for AA before the tournament and I'll continue to back him in.

- Oleg Markov enters at #42. Impressive stuff from him. Looks a WHE clone. His ranking is a little volatile though as he's really only played two good games in two years - they've just been the two most important ones.

- Thomas Cameron rises. Liked what I saw. Ditto Cam Hewett - he's the right height and perhaps the SA mid with the most upside (i.e. potential improvement from here until peak - Parto will likely be the best)

- Matthew Allen falls. He's not all that.

He was the only good forward for SA in the WA game. I was most impressed by his aerial skills and agility. I'd like to see SA give him some midfield minutes at some point in the champs to see if he has another string to how bow or even across the HBF.

Balic didn't move up? Any reasons thought he was really good in the first two champs games.

Because I don't read into the numbers when I can trust my own eye.

He's a seagull. He wins and receives cheap ball, disposes of the ball conservatively and doesn't really so much. Yeah, he's got some pretty cool evasive moves and good spacial awareness, but he just doesn't actually hurt for mine. He's like a poor man's Jackson MacRae but not as tall, not as broad shouldered (scope for inside game), not as elite a handball and not as ridiculous an accumulator. Perhaps he's not as rabidly comservative as Jackson by foot but he still is.

Yup. I've seen him a bit at league level and he's looked like an afl playee but just not as poised as he does at this level. I suspect that will change.

I hope, and suspect, that they will.

Just realised I went to primary school with and played with Bonner back in the day :p

Great write up Skippos, early days yet but given if the crows keep their first pick who do you potentially see being the most suited for us?

Very early days

Schache if he's there but he won't be. Likewise Tucker and Parish. Assuming it's aroumd 12-14 I'd be thinking Partington or Bonner. Parto the better player but probably not as good a list fit and bonner the better list fit. Ryan Clarke another who might suit.

Cole? Anymore thoughts on Tardrew mate?

hey Skippos, you're probably in the know about Burton seeing as you're from Adelaide.

With that injury, I'd assume we're unlikely to see him this season? Think he'll still get drafted even though he's probably likely to slip down the ranking?
