That second gif gets me sad.

So very, very sad.

I am more annoyed than sad, a lot of kids show potential as a junior but that never translates to AFL level, Harper showed he had the tools for AFL level and we tried to turn him into a footballer he wasn't and it utterly flushed his career down the toilet.

You can say meh, well, it didn't work out, such is life. That is unfair to the kid denied a career in this industry. This is different to guys talked up like Trotter or Urquhart who pretty much didn't fire a shot, he not only had the tools but he had exactly what our team was lacking.

Sure, he had deficiencies, but so does Rioli, Smith and all their flea weight players at the Hawks, overall they make up for it and they have multiple premierships because they produced sides balanced between defense and attack. For whatever reason we don't value the players with x factor, at times during the season we played some unwatchable footy of an abysmally low standard of skill and bereft of any aggression.

I hope we never stuff up like that again.

tl;dr version: #sackscott

Something like that?
Something like that, completely ignoring the debilitating injuries, paper joints and setbacks he had due to changing his running style and then inability to find the pill when playing around the ball all game etc.

It's all the coaches faults.

I look forward to him proving the club wrong via B section Ammos. Give me a spell Tas.

So watching him play for the two odd years you are saying he had no ability at AFL level? What changed?

I recorded it and am watching the game now - for anyone who gets a chance have a look - its the worst example of commentators barracking that i have ever seen. Bruce is outwardly sour when we get a goal. One comment towards Petrie after an awesome tackle made me sick.

Noone ever said that.

His ankles took on the consistency of chalk is what happened.

He lost all confidence in himself to the point where the club got him to see a sports psychologist over his issues.

And then couldn't find the pill at VFL level enough to get a berth in the AFL team.

If as reported above he "lost interest", would explain a lot.

Blaming the club for his turnaround is ludicrous.

A whole host of players have looked promising but haven't gone on with it for a whole heap of reasons (confidence, injuries, and I suspect for the most part getting worked out by opposition coaches).

Every club has recruiters watching every AFL-listed player. It isn't misfortune that he is no longer on an AFL list.

Difference is nobody took someone who was playing very well in a position and said, we are going to turn you into a totally different footballer and play in a totally different position, different role, etc.

I'm still struggling to understand how a debilitating and ultimately career-ending injury was caused by coaches playing him out of position.

I don't think you appreciate how fragile the mental state of a footballer often is. For most footballers the ultimate struggle is above the shoulders, we saw it with McKernan, even more recently with Thompson. Petrie seems to struggle with the mental demons constantly.

Players get injured all the time, Tarrant was sidelined with shoulder problems for longer than Harper was on our list. His injuries were not the reason he didn't make it.

We made the same mistake with Atley but reversed the decision to turn him into a midfielder relatively quickly. Our attempts at turning flankers into mids have been an abject disaster. We at least changed the decision with Atley relatively quickly, the Harper move only happened this season.

Player development is critical for success, one player falls, another fills the spot, but years of experience and development is lost, you will always recruit players that are not likely going to make it but someone with the talent of Harper or Black should not end up on a scrap heap. If we can't succeed in developing these kind of players then I am not sure we will have enough x-factor to break games open and contend. Who are we relying on Boomer who is 38 and a 31 year old Wells who has barely seen a footy in 2 years?

Our player development needs to be better if we are going to contend.

I don't dispute the need to develop players from so-so to superstars if we are to progress, but if the recruiters continue too use 2nd round picks to select junior footballers who play exclusively on the flanks and hope to make them midfielders, which is something we've been doing for 15 years, then I don't think it's entirely our development coaches that are to blame. In my opinion, there isn't much of a role in football these days for multiple specialist flankers in a team or on a list. You can get away with very few of these but they have to be freaks like Corey Jones. Maybe Harps had that capacity but we'll never know now. The rest need to be able to rotate through the middle. I feel that the problem is not necessarily development, but rather, adjusting a game plan to suit the A-grade players coming through. Aaron Black would kick 50-60 goals a season at Hawthorn. He is surplus to requirements with us as there is no role for him.

There is only so much coaches can do to turn a players fortunes around after the player has a bad patch with confidence etc.
I'm sure they do all they can but the rest is upto the player.
The average life of a AFL player of all the players that get picked by all clubs is about 2 yrs.
How much work is the player going to do to turn things around off the field.
Some players aren't cut out for the highest level also.
One or two solid yrs is all well and good but once clubs work a player out how will he respond !
We'v seen players come and get chewed up by the AFL conveyer belt and thats just how it is.
Sure injuries and luck play their part but Tarrant is a good example of overcoming that playing in a different position and making the best of it.
Recruiters and coaches, development coaches can only do so much and the rest is upto the player imo
The game is Proffesional and players get more help now than they Ever did in the past so i don't think they can really complain..
It's no suprise that the best players playing or played the game are the hardest trainers on and off the field. Ablett,Judd etc..

Then there's old Fyfe-y, another example.

I'm sure yinz have all seen clips of players mic'd up during games… (yep, duly noted that some are very unflattering/ dull… like our skipper's lack of lip service :() BUT however having 'the story relayed from a very reliable source' of what Dish said to his teammates at the three quarter time huddle would be VERY impressive/ inspiring. That clip you show Gaso, is a testament of responding to Drew's words.

Rewind back to Round 17 2012… venue: MCG

The Tiges had worked back from a 12 pt HT deficit to lead by 7pts at the last change.. after being addressed by Brad.. Petrie gathered everyone close and as my source told me after the game.. that Petrie was REMINDING everyone how 'MENTALLY WEAK' and 'NOT GOOD ENOUGH' to beat Gold Coast the previous week (The day NRL's Karmichael Hunt kicked the winning goal after the siren for a two point win) and then told everyone to "WE CAN BEAT THESE WEAK PRICKS"…

North hung on to win by FOUR points!! Petrie Booted SEVEN.. Five in the last. That, my friends is TALKING the TALK, WALKING the WALK. :thumbsu:
