Adelaide is not in trouble at all. We have just been through another economic restructuring that has furthered the slight decline of our previously strong manufacturing base. There has been about 4-5 of these over the past 30 years. This recent one has been purely the result of the high Aust dollar that started during 2010-11 that has wiped out a few manufacturing businesses that survived the last economic restructuring. The lower $A dollar over the past year has appeared to finally bring things back to some sort of equilibrium as evident by our better u/e rate stats released today.

There are many US cities - Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Cleveland, Detroit, Cincinatti, Baltimore that have suffered from huge losses of manufacturing jobs over past 30 years, similar to Adelaide. However Adelaide has been far more successful in generating jobs in other sectors such as health, to compensate the loss of manufacturing jobs. These US cities haven't been any where near as successful in generating new employment sectors. There is no magic button to press for previous manufacturing centres, but we have done quite well. Adelaide's pop growth is quite good for worldwide standards, however when we are compared to 2 of the fastest growing cities in the world - Perth and Brisbane, I guess it makes us look bad.

There will always be people that move interstate to chase high paying jobs and the bright lights, just like some people in Melbourne and Sydney leave to go to London, NY, Singapore or Hong Kong, but to crap on about doomsday theories is nonsense. All economic indicators such as u/e rates, pop growth, house prices and visitors number actually show Adelaide isn't doing too bad at all.

The next round of economic restructuring will occur when Holdens closes, hopefully it will be like when Mitsubishi closed - didn't really have a huge impact.

Interesting that Holden's is currently looking for more workers atm

Feds made it crystal clear when a minority gov was formed they'd punish SA.

So much this.
Just ANOTHER example of the most petty immature cowardly Government this country's ever had.
