I give up.

I need to buy a family car for kids, large and growing dog. Never go off road so not worried about any of that crap.

I suspect I'm going to end up with a Subaru but anyone have any advice on standouts or lemons to avoid?

I have a 2010 Subaru Outback. Very spacious and reliable, more than enough room for a dog in the back (either boot or back seat). Never really had any problems with it but it isn't the most zippy car around.

5* safety too. Quite a nice car.

What sort of roads driving on? How much do you want to spend?

Sounds like you need a full sized wagon?

Unless your pulling alot of weight, a commordore wagon from the auctions (ex fleet)on LPG is a safe bet. if your pulling weight, nothing newer than a bf mark 1. Fords are good workhorses but thirsty.

Look out for front suspension and brakes, properly serviced cooling system, most importantly the trans. The trans is the weak spot in wagons.

Just a family thing with room for a dog and luggage for occasional trips away.

Hadn't thought of the auctions - where do you find out about that?

Maybe not a proper 4WD but something like a Territory, Outlander, Rav4 would probably do the job.
Might find it pretty hard selling a wagon as well, SUV's are all the rage.

One of the above might be a good option as a 2WD. Personal, but I'd stick with a Diesel if you can, in any large car / SUV.

I'd go with this customised '62 Impala myself:
