A DOB for H Molan, a different DOB for C Ryan, and a different one again for C Molan !!

Seems to me a distinct lack of paperwork maintained over the years.
Wonder what are the earliest dates for original player registration papers still held in AFL archives ?

Presumably around the country an Australian Football registration sheet would be similar throughout all senior competitions.
A select few held at the Queen Victoria Museum (hundreds, but not thousands) for the NTFA comp in Nth Tas 1960s to 1980s often include:
full name, current address, date of birth, clubs played with in previous four years.
It's a bit hard to understand the gap between 1878/1879 and 1886 with this! As they have communicated with the granddaughter of Con Molan I would hope (and imagine) they were able to get the actual DOB from her. If so, ideally it would have been mentioned.

Since the demise of the AFL Historical Statistics website (I've still never heard a reasonable explanation for why that happened?!) revelations such as this one (Molan story) are only uncovered through luck much of the time, as far as the football statisticians/historians among us are concerned. Ideally, the AFL statistics people would pass on news like this, either with a small note in the Football Record, in a spot on it's website or even by posting something here. Probably 99% of football supporters couldn't give a rats ar*e as to whether e.g. 1047 or 1048 players have played for Geelong, but there's still a fair few people who take such things very seriously!

Fitzroy and St Kilda met in the 1913 Grand Final, with Fitzroy winning by 13-points. For 83 years after this, until Fitzroy finished in the AFL as a club as its own right at the end of 1996, the Lions and Saints did not play in the same finals series again. In the 10 years (1987-1996) that the Brisbane Bears played in the league, there was no finals series that featured both the Saints and the Bears.

However, when the Brisbane Lions made the finals in their first season in 1997, their opponents were none other than St Kilda.

In the 14 years that Perth's WACA ground was an AFL venue (1987-2000), the West Coast Eagles played all clubs in existence at the time there with two exceptions; Richmond and Fremantle.

Somewhat ironically when the last ever AFL game was played at the WACA, the fixture was Fremantle vs. Richmond, a day game late in the 2000 season.

I posted this on the Footy History board but 35Daicos suggested that it'd also be worthy of mentioning here too.

Just tonight by chance I stumbled upon the interesting case of Con Molan, a Cats player in the 1900s who has recently been discovered to have played under two names during his career! Those concerned may want to update their records, as Col Hutchison appears to have done.

Bastard had no idea how he was ******* with my database a hundred years in the future. NO IDEA!

If the early games continue as they are and Melbourne and the Bulldogs win, the last time both sides were 2-0 was in 1962.

Well Melbourne have stopped and GWS have kicked 14 unanswered goals. Melbourne have finally ended the run.

Score was 1.6 - 7.3, it got to 15.8 - 7.7

Hawthorn streak of 26 consecutive games scoring over 85 points ended today.

In fact it was their lowest score since rd 19 2013.

No team had 10 or more goalkickers this round for the first time since R12 2010. The next most recent occurrence was R17 2001, then R1 1995.

Tom Lynch's second-quarter goal was Gold Coast's 1000th in the AFL.

Geelong's 200th consecutive game without a draw (behind only Adelaide on 477, which is the longest ever sequence for any club).

Freo fielded its third oldest side (26.98) behind R19 2014 (27.13) and R1 2008 (27.01).

Average age of all players in Round 1 was 25.25 - the highest since R18 1946 (Round 2 average 25.16).

Adding to that, Josh J Kennedy kicked his 3rd set of 10 goals or more.

Also, IIRC, West Coast's score of 131 is the lowest score where someone's kicked at least 10 goals since 1998 when Plugger kicked 12 goals and Sydney beat Port Adelaide 118-84.

97% of teams who have started 0-2 in 2008-2014 have missed the finals. (I include Carlton 13 as missing as Essendon earned that spot)
Sydney 2014 the lone exception.

Time to write off Geelong and Port Adelaide?

Geelong paying $1.88 for that honour but Port paying $3.75!! So the bookies don't agree but those numbers do sound convincing!

I was somewhat surprised when looking at Brent Harvey's figures recently, that with 458 career goals he has never kicked more than 36 in a season, which led me onto compiling the following stat:

Most career goals without kicking more than x goals in a season
