BRISBANE has been rocked by another serious injury, with ruckman Stefan Martin set to miss six weeks with an ankle problem. The 26-year-old had already been ruled out of today's must-win clash with his former club Melbourne.
But Lions medical staff yesterday confirmed Martin will go under the knife this week. Martin was making a decent fist of the forward/back-up ruck role at the Lions but the ankle injury had hampered his movement in the past couple of weeks and it had showed no signs of improvement.
Versatile tall Stefan Martin will also take his first steps this week towards recovery from an ankle injury.
Martin is expected to train with the main group on Friday and should be available for selection to play the Dockers in round 12.
Stef Martin – there are some things I could say there that I probably won't say."
The Lions approach this Sunday’s match against premiership favourites Hawthorn in Tasmania with only three names on their injury list – Stephen Wrigley (knee), Claye Beams (knee) and Stefan Martin (ankle).
That list could be trimmed further, with Martin a chance to play his first match in two months with the Lions Reserves on Friday night in Sydney.
“Stef’s going along pretty well. He trained this morning with the rehab group and is tracking along for this week,” Brett Burton told LIONS TV as part of the Bupa Recovery Report.
The Lions could also be bolstered by Stefan Martin, who was close to resuming with the Reserves in Sydney last Friday.
“Stef didn’t quite get through our final training session last week, so we decided that he shouldn’t fly to Sydney,” Harding said.
“He trained very well this week, and has assured me he’s ready to go.”
Stefan Martin, meanwhile, has suffered a minor setback in his return from a serious ankle injury, after tweaking his hamstring late last week.
Martin was expected to play his first match in almost three months with the Lions Reserves on Saturday, but will instead have to wait at least another two weeks.
“He’s had a few fits and starts with his ankle. When you’re out for that period of time you have to get used to the load,” Physical Performance Manager Brett Burton told LIONS TV as part of the Bupa Recovery Report.
Melbourne recruit Stefan Martin, who has not played since badly damaging his ankle in round four, appears on target to resume in the reserves early next month.
