.....Geelong but delay on talks with Steve Motlop

Motlop, so critical for the Cats given the loss of Allen Christensen and Travis Varcoe, is happy to build a solid base of home-and-away footy before talks get underway.
As he did in his last contract he will focus on his footy despite the club’s determination to lock him away early in the year......

The 23-year-old is intent on returning to his slashing 2013 form after a late start to last year caused by knee surgery and a trip to Europe to visit specialists.

He seems happy at Geelong, but after a game-changing off-season where a host of stars left clubs no team will be comfortable until its stars are signed up.

Old story but rather than pollute other threads I thought Motlop should have one of his own

The question is what is his worth in the market , what is his worth to us.. do we get him signed before looking at any other player.....

At 800 for Hawk , I say get the pen out. I say 500 is about right for SM , but I suspect he may want more, any more than that we have to be careful imo

I know others aren't as satisfied with remarks like these, but I just got around to watching him on Marngrook a couple of weeks back and the noises he were making, while indirect, were positive IMO. Things like saying he wants to become a leader of the club and that he is working hard with Chris Scott to be a better defensive player.

I think he is holding back because he knows he can put together a 2013-esque season in 2015 which will increase his value markedly.

I'm still comfortable with that at this stage.

Hopefully that is it. Clearly his market value waned a little last year. With a big 2015 he could replace maybe a 4 with a 5 or perhaps even 6 with an appropriately constructed contract.

I have had the feeling we would lose him at some point for ages, but it actually softened the other week when he posted a photo of himself with Buddha Hocking at the season launch and with a comment about great of our club or something.

There was probably nothing in it but it made me feel better about him staying long term.

If his fitness and form hold up and he is slicing teams up with his 50 to 50 gut busting runs then he deserves the big coin

Can he get his 2013 form back? Has he the body to do it? He looked a shade slower, and he jogs around like 33 year old sometimes. I wonder if he will come good. Hasn't lost any skills, but he is still using the same decision making he had when he was half a yard faster. jmo

He's AA Squad, he's in our best 6, he's crucial to our future, if he plays anything like 2013 he'll be offered $500,000+ from elsewhere, get him signed asap.

Until he can start dominating against the better sides of the competition and not just the teams making up the numbers, he's not worth anywhere near a Tomahawk kind of salary.

As catempire pointed out above, he'll probably put off contract talks until seasons end so he can focus entirely on elevating his game to the heights he reached in 2013.

I don't think anyone has suggested a Hawkins salary level.
We could reasonably expect him to improve on 2013, given he's now fitter, and has been racking up his usual numbers in the practice matches.
We could always wait, as his price goes up week by week, I suppose.

I have never met him - check that - once at a VFL game last year he turned up at Coburg - very brief but was good enough to be there - think he was still hurt at the time….

Anyway, IMO he respects the club for sticking with him when he did his shoulders back in the day and that they have let him build over time. 2008 was along time ago.

That said he is probably due a pay rise and if he on 350ish now 500k for him in the GFC structure is very reasonable. Im sure open market would draw more ( see Betts at Crows on 600 I believe) so it would be out there for him IF he really had to have it. Hawkins and Selsy money he can kiss the left one. Not yet.

Go Catters

Here's a glass half full thought: if, as we suspect, he hopes to pump up his value through top shelf performances in 2015, the longer he drags it out the better! Best case result he wins the Brownlow and Norm Smith and signs a big deal with us on 4 October. :)

With the flow on effect that we are a much more attractive prospect for Danger if that happens as well

Not sure on that. Its seems uncontracted a club lose's too much "hand". Under certain circumstances other clubs would be able to out bid us for him ...so it depends on his wants and wheres. If got to the end of the year , no ink on paper..would we be looking at P21 again?

If Motlop ends up deserving 800k then that means that he played an Ablett - like season and won us the premiership.

If Motlop's pay increase means that we can't afford danger then this also means that Motlop elevated himself to a level where we wouldn't need Danger.

Gee, there are a few here and elsewhere saying he doesn't merit the same money as Hawkins.
But nobody saying that he does, either.

Part tongue in cheek TC. Also assumes he has no desire to leave and just wants as big a deal from Geelong as he can get.

I sort of know what your saying. All I can say if he want Premium money he better play Gold Class cause Im just watching Dangerfield go crazy V North. He is playing like a M dollar man.

Id think if SM plays to his potential 500 is fair. If he wants more than that we have to prioritise . Id even be prepare to put a B&F/ Brownlow type bonus etc. At his best he is special...he is just not Best 10 in the League special.

Thats obvious but if we have a 10M SC one can only have so many at that level. 500 is fair imo if he returns to his better form. Any idea where he finished in the B&F in 2013?

Yeah, I'm also watching PD. He is a beast. Just what we need.

To be honest this whole free agent business is ripping the heart out of the game for old farts like me,this game was at it's best when it was tribal,I'm struggling to cope with player movement It just goes against the grain.Anyway what ever we pay will have to be overs I guess so 500k is probable the starting point and his 2015 season will determine if it's higher or lower.
