That's such a s**t argument. Don't you believe in open markets and personal freedoms? Nobody forced anyone to try to come Australia.

I hope one day we can have unfettered immigration but we have much work to do globally to reduce the disparity in wealth. otherwise we will crash our social systems like medical, social security and other core elements that make Australia great.

Maybe after 50-100 more years of globalisation, we can consider that notion of unfettered immigration.

Out of curiousity, what is your thoughts on globalisation? or are you about end game utopias and not hard work and process?

It is ridiculous to compare open markets with unfettered immigration. A free market required government. That requires a nation state which by definition has borders. An illogical argument

The position of free market economists that a free market requires the free movement of capital and labour across borders. Immigration can only be positive sum with the dismantling of the welfare system. Saying that a free market economy still has borders is not an argument against this.

No. See Ron Paul re libertarian argument against mass immigration. Free unfettered movement of labour is an unmitigated economic disaster. End Australian borders tomorrow and millions of Chinese and Indians (unskilled) would come.

See unemployment rates of refugee groups in Oz. Vastly different to non refugees. Stopping the boats is basic economic sense.

I hope that one day, we will know exactly how much this has cost both in human misery and in $$$$$.
Read somewhere that we are paying out $4million per day to people on TPV as they not allowed to work. Never mind there is always 457 visas.
If anyone wants to know the Greens policy on this, just go to their site.

Eh? Someone on a TPV can work.

If anyone wants to know the Greens policy on this, just go to their site.

The Greens insistence on abolishing TPVs is one of the causes of the problems we've got today.

Eh? Someone on a TPV can work.

yeah, Those under Gillard's No Advantage have no rights to work.

Many actually don't have a visa at the moment because Labor and the Greens are blocking TPV

To a greens supporter tpv lures women and children on boats even though thousands of women and children somehow got into detention during Labor's term and they turned a blind eye.

It is all very well to point the finger at the Labor (what they did) and the Greens but the Libs are in charge now.
They have been very slow in processing AS, don't like TPV's and refuse to process quickly then on the other hand pay them to live in the community..
Off-shore processing, payment to those in the community, detention centres still open, cost of on water operation etc, must be costing tax payers a fortune.
Add in money to PNG and Nauru under the guise of Foreign Aid and this is a big mess.
This is of course not including the cost of mental issues to human beings, who only wanted a safe haven for themselves and their families.
I acknowledge and realise some may not be genuine, but then again some maybe, it will be sometime before we know, if ever.
In the years to come they may be a Royal Commission into this mess.
And please, if anyone wants to respond, please don't bring up the old, deaths at sea and people smugglers chestnut. This is about now.

The Libs tried to bring back TPVs last December. They were stopped in the Senate by Labor/Greens.

The truth is to the Greens, its not about the right to work......because by the government's own statistics the rate of employment for asylum seekers and refugees are extremely low.

its about a pathway to Australian citizenship and family reunion.

Italy is the new poster child of left wing compassion. So far this year they have welcomed 80,791 arrivals from North Africa - of course most of them wont stay in Italy they'll be absorbed into the EU (Italy's neighbours are spewing). Anyhoo along with this "compassion" comes the obligatory deaths at sea, rioting and dispicable behaviour by these "refugees". This week 30 odd suffocation deaths on one vessel, followed by 60 murders (assaulted then thrown overboard) on another.

Utter tosh. A free market does not require government, re Public Servants involvement at all. Just as the movement/contracting of Labor resource in a market system requires minimal if any government interference.

The tamils are coming to mainland Australia

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jul/25/tamils-held-high-seas-transferred-mainland-camp

The Australian border protection vessel carrying 157 Tamil asylum seekers is on its way to the Australian territory of the Cocos Islands, where the department of immigration plans to transfer the asylum seekers to immigration detention on the Australian mainland, Guardian Australia understands.

The whereabouts of the boat and the welfare of those on board have been closely guarded secrets with only senior personnel of Australia’s hardline border protection regime Operation Sovereign Borders briefed on its location.

This is an outstanding achievement by the illegal immigration industry of Australia. 157 country shoppers placed in indefinite and inhumane detention, interest rekindled for others to attempt the dangerous trip .. but most importantly - finally an ARRIVAL!!! I'm thrilled for the many lawyers, Abbott haters, advocates and public servants who are reliant on this trade for their livelihoods.

You remind me of someone pushing a big rock uphill. Be careful it doesn't roll back.

welp, the government has confirmed it so something has changed in the last couple of days.

http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2014/07/25/asylum-seekers-come-ashore-says-govt

A group of 150 Tamil asylum seekers and seven other people being held on a Customs ship for nearly a month are being transferred to the Australian mainland.

They will be held until Indian consular officials have had the opportunity to speak to them about their possible return.

"It is our intention those who can be returned should and must be returned," Immigration Minister Scott Morrison told reporters in Sydney on Friday.

India has agreed to take back any of its citizens and will consider taking Sri Lankan nationals who are Indian non-citizen residents.

two possibilities

1) They tried with the sri lankans and got knocked back, they tried with the Indians and got knocked back and they're coming home with their tails between their legs to preempt a bad outcome at the high court.

2) They've worked out some informal agreement with India or Sri Lanka and this is just part of the process. Its curious they chose to go to the Cocos Island when Christmas Island is just next door. Its still uncertain why they chose the Curtin detention centre.

The boat was already close to the mainland so make sense. I suspect the HC was going to embarrass the government.

I thought the boats had stopped ;)

They had, now we are just collecting the trash of the ocean that no other country will take, all they need now to do is just jump in a boat somewhere in the world and tell the bleeding hearts in the press they are heading to Australia (even if they are still over 3000 km from there) and in they come, please pick up your house keys, welfare cheques and Australian passports on the way through, oh and if you'd like to head back home to fight in a war or bring the relatives over, go for it.

The government should be ashamed for allowing this to happen. Offshore processing is the only way to keep a sustainable immigration policy.

97% of people do the right thing and the whole system is being undermined by a minority. Watch the 3% blossom into 100% if the government allows people smugglers and lawyers control the process.
