Nope, Sun is a name, it's what we call our star - every other star is a star until it's named.
The Sun is refereed to as The Sun because it is OUR sun. Much like the The Moon is our Moon. But there are many more Moons and many more Suns out in the void.

Nah. Sol is the name of the star - hence the solar system.

The sun is a star but each planet's star is it's sun as well.

So there are many suns but only ever one solar system

That guy can * off. Stupid pompous irksome self-righteous w@nker from a country world renowned for it's limp-wristed and effeminate glorification of ceremony and process over actual results in every single sport they ever participate in.

Leave our teams, and our names, to ourselves. We're fine without your input. Good sir

We can bash essendon for a lot of things but I somehow dont think when the picked the bombers nickname they could have predicted the future.

Poor call and silly article.

precisely - reminds me of the ridiculous outcry when some sensitive souls wanted to change the name of the 2nd Lord of the Rings film being released at the time from 'the Two Towers' because it evoked Sept. 11 bombings..

What about Sheffield United 'The Blades' ? Anyone mentioned them (can't be bothered trawling through 11 pages of this thread)

Thanks Dupree, a very nice example of irrational ad hominem. I'll save that. :)

You're actually wrong.

Try and find a definition of 'sun' that doesn't refer specifically to Sol.

"As we came to understand that the stars in the sky are other suns, and that the galaxies consist of billions of stars, it appeared a near certainty that other planets must orbit other stars."

Sun is kind of like a relative term, other planetary bodies in other systems have their own "sun" but our "Sun" is the one present relative to Earth.

"A star is called a "sun" if it is the center of a planetary system. A large number of planets have been found that orbit other stars, thus making these stars officially "suns."

What dictionary supports this usage?
