Its all getting a bit too much. On the afl brownlow website leaderboard there are no less than 12 links to places where bets can be made on the winner. 12 links on one page. Too bad if you have a problem with gambling I suppose.

yep. smoking most people agree. Imagine 12 links to places where I can buy a gun.... probably not going to happen even though most gun buyers are responsible. How about vodka ? Probably legal but unlikely to have 12 links for alcohol, but gambling seems to just be open slather, not even the token ˝gamble responsibly˝ self imposed code of conduct limp lettuce leaf.I can't stand them.
Ban them just like smoking ads.
what bothers me is it is designed to become cultural, like happy meals for kids. If I am 11 and taking an interest in the Brownlow or football in general everywhere I look it is linked to betting on it.. like this is the normal thing to do. Interested in round 17 WB vs GCS, bet on it.... want to know who wins the AFL coaches award ? bet on it. There are no restrictions based on age so although I am sure if I am 11 I caannot open an internet betting account, for the next 7 years it will be drummed into me that gambling on football is just part of taking an interest in the game. The Brownlow is now a gambling event.
Bruce even calls it like a horse race and we go around the room speaking to players like they are horse trainings. There's talk about form, fitness and preparation.
To be honest I don't particularly mind it for the Brownlow. Spices up a boring event. It's that the gambling adds are everywhere the rest of the time that bothers me.
if the AFL can't even bring themselves to sign up to anto-binge drinking ads I cant see them tackling gambling properly soon. The AFL just care about profits.
They don't care about ethics.
But, they will tell you all about integrity.
But its ok to have footy and alcohol inextricably linked. Reverse raffles at the local footy club all you can drink piss. Underage drinking. Carlton Draught sponsorships. I guess we are used to that problem though and just let it be.
Not saying that because alcohol is a bigger problem that makes gambling ads ok, but I suppose it is controversial because it is new.
If you are worried about your kids, banning is not the answer. Take the initiative and teach them or talk to their maths teachers about the reality of gambling.
