TASMANiAN FAN MALE
• Ray Armstrong — "One of the unluckiest players in Tasmanian Football".

HE UNLUCKIEST player in Tasmanian Football is undoubtedly Ray Armstrong. Ray has probably had more ups and downs than anyone else currently playing
in this State.
Since coming to Clarence in 1958 he has broken his jaw once and had two compressed fractures of his cheek bone! There have been less serious injuries as well.
As well as being talented, the roos' rover is game. Despite medical advice that the next knock on the head might permanently affect and disfigure him, Ray has gone on playing. He nows wears a plastic covered fibre glass head-gear on the field.
In his years with Clarence Ray has played nearly 100 games. All but four of them have been with the Seniors.
In 1961 he represented the Tasmanian Football League against the Northern Tasmanian Football Association and the North West Football Union.
This season saw an early set-back. Ray was dropped to the Seconds. But the never-say-die spirit asserted itself and he was soon back in the Senior side. His form in recent games has re-established him as one of the leading rovers in the south.
With Stuart Spencer and newcomer, Lucas, he makes up a talented roving trio.
— BY RICK FARMER

THE MUCH trumpeted return of Vict orian and Carlton wingman, John Chick, to his old side Glenorchy four years ago, proved to be sadly off key.
As captain-coach of the black and whites, Chick was a dismal failure. The side went from being one of the strengths of Tasmanian Football to an also ran. Chick's own form was a far cry from what fans remembered when he was a schoolboy champion with the Magpies in the early 1950's.
With his long distinguished record in top V.F.L. circles behind him, Chick was expected to be even better on his return, despite the added years. Unfortunately for his old team, such was not the case. He was far from the inspirational playing coach.
His own form was a dreary shadow of his former greatness. He was lethargic on the field, and seemed to have lost interest in football. At 26 years of age he had naturally lost a yard or two in pace. He was also carrying an old injury when he returned.
But his personal contributions to the Magpies efforts in the past three seasons appalled even his more ardent fans. Even after all allowances were made, Chick seemed to have little interest in football.
But this year has seen a change. Chick is playing top class football. He was unlucky to miss out on selection in the southern side that played the North and North West. There is little doubt that this year he has been the most consistent half forward flanker in the south.
His play has done much to make Glenorchy a danger side for the T.F.L.
leaders.
Not that the Magpies under new non-playing coach Bob Parsons are likely to be premiership dangers. They aren't! But there has been a definite improvement in the side. With this year's experience behind them, the young northern suburbs players should become a dangerous combination next year.
The knowledge Chick is passing on to his "chicks" as captain is largely responsible for this.
Western Australia has picked their State team. We were surprised to hear this news, as we did not know the West had any players left. Seriously, it would be a good idea if Victoria picked their squad in time for the players to get together.

Found a Hobart jumper at home recently from the Statewide days, number 60, anyone know who wore it and I also have a lace up Nth Hobart number 22 ?

Hey Moocher, 22 at North Hobart would have been Steve McQueen. A gun forward who could kick them from anywhere.

Ah the old "accidently" picking up the wrong jumper trick. If anyone has my Scottsdale magpies jumpers (x2) Number 14 i'd like them back please!!!!!

s**t your right you know. I dont know what i was thinking. Im going to return all those jumpers at once. Thanks saint50 for pointing that out for me:thumbsu:

Russell Robertson !
I was sitting in the Ryde Street Stand at North Hobart at that very moment he took that screamer for the Mariners that was shown on Almost Footy Legends which led to him being drafted. Had a perfect view of it. He came from nowhere and just launched himself :thumbsu:
It was the curtain raiser to the Hobart - Glenorchy match on 9th August 1996, it was Hobart's last ever win in TFL football, winning a truly forgettable game 10.18 (78) - 9.10 (64).
Only memorable moment in that game was Hobart booting their first goal of the match early in the 2nd quarter through current Hobart coach Todd Lewis, it broke a run of SIX consecutive goal-less quarters for the senior team!
Was a TFL record, certainly in post war football definitely.
They then went on to lose the next 25 in-a-row

Here are some hard players who played with Burnie over the years

Dale Whish Wilson

Robbie Wright

Ian Gardam

Anthony Wjitehead

Scott Walker

Michael Schultz

All these guys had a bit of agro about them! I reckon we should ask moocher82 to comment as I think he played with all these blokes, so enlighten us with your thoughts moocher82?

I've played with four of them. I remember whitehead having a dustup before the first bounce of the game, breaking his arm in the process and going out to continue the game. Still remember him showing me the screw that stuck out underneath his skin after he broke it

Cooee Bulldog - Can you confirm something for me please mate?

At the end of the 1986 NWFU season, the Cooee Football Club made a submission to join the TFL Statewide League for 1987 and beyond.
They were granted permission to do so and upon leaving the NWFU for the TFL, the club changed its name to Burnie Hawks for its TFL debut.

Reason I ask, is there's some absolute coxmoker called AFL_Cool on Wikipedia who refuses to believe it (and militantly edits anything that states as such), thinks the Burnie Hawks were a new club that were a merger of the Bulldogs and Tigers, doesn't even believe Cooee and the Tigers used to share West Park for Christ's sake!

"I know a lot about Tasmanian football" says this bellend...

My memory is much the same as Kingpin's, except less reliable.
Cooee changed their name to Burnie to try and get support of the whole town, and could not be Bulldogs because of South Launceston. (Had East and City not merged, we probably would have had the Burnie Bulldogs.)

If it was a new club, where did Cooee go? They didn't play anywhere else, which seems unusual for what was the stronger side in Burnie at the time.
