16k at Metricon. Touch disappointing I would have thought. Not sure if Brisbane fans travel to the GC in great numbers for the Q clash, not that they have much incentive to by the way they are playing.

63,000 +the MCG A little bit down I would think but overall the crowds are ok.

predict about 80,000 minimum (based on 5,000 for GWS, 20,000 for North and 50k at the G) tomorrow for all 3 games. Will start knocking off some the deficit at least.

Any idea when the last time an Essendon v Carlton game failed to attract 50k was?

the revamped Adelaide oval is going great guns, over 50k for the first game and 47 for yesterdays game against the swans

I said all along not to be surprised if the crowd was mid to low 40's.

I think it'll be top 4-5 h&a crowds vs Fremantle so really it's a good turnout.

As someone mentioned, Id only expect collingwood, Richmond and essendon to be able to pull close to or over 50k vs Fremantle. It very rarely gets done vs any other interstate team.

Pretty good start to the round

45000 was probably the pass mark (on the basis that Hawthorn v West Coast drew 50023 in 2012)

That said given all attendances are seemingly in decline it wasn't a bad roll up.

The MCC evidently predicted that Collingwood v Geelong would draw 70,000, aside from Hawthorn v Fremantle (MCC est. 40000) all MCG crowds thus far have drawn 5000 plus under expectation...

62k a pretty decent return for a Sunday night. Same as Richmond-Carlton on the Thursday last week. Still down on what it could have done on a Fri-Sat night, but still pretty good.

43,500 to Hawks V Dockers tonight. A pretty good crowd.

It had everything going for it: Friday night at the MCG, good weather, grand final replay.. The only missing ingredient was Buddy Franklin really! I think the GF replay and being in a petfect timeslot would draw another 6-8,000 casuals to the game. I think this is evident in the fact the AFL & MCC members were surprisingly quite busy considering the teams involved and the sort of roll up these teams would achieve under more usual conditions.

As a comparison for Freo games at the G, I think Richmind drew a similar number in average conditions to the G last year and the Pies have drawn about 45,000 V Freo at the G as well though clearly not the same anticipation around these contests.. I think the Pies, Tiges, Bombers would probably have drawn 50,000+ tonight in similar circumstances. Having said that, I don't think any other Vic clubs would have drawn 43,000 V the Dockers in tonight's circumstances, perhaps Carlton I guess.

All in all, the AFL will be happy to get a decent Melbourne crowd under it's belt after recent criticism on crowds.. Deflects the bad publicity.... Until Sunday night anyway:)

Pretty much agree. Collingwood would probably draw 55,000 to an equivalent fixture, Essendon/Richmond somewhere in the vicinity of 50,000 and Carlton probably 45,000.

Evidently the largest crowd for each Melbourne club against non-Victorian opposition (not including Sydney/Brisbane)

Collingwood V West Coast 62957 (2012)
Essendon V West Coast 55095 (1999)
Hawthorn V West Coast 50027 (2012)
Carlton V Adelaide 44711 (2013)
Richmond V Fremantle 43805 (2012)
St Kilda V West Coast 40777 (2006)
Melbourne V Adelaide 39475 (2005)
North Melbourne V Adelaide 38469 (2003)
Western Bulldogs V West Coast 30900 (2007)

Aside from Richmond V Fremantle each peak attendance has been against West Coast (5) or Adelaide (3). Aside from Essendon (which is restricted by size of Ethiad) each peak attendance has occurred over the last 10 seasons...

I could just imagine how many Tiger fans would turn up for a flag unfurling.
Would need to build another deck on top of Richmond Paddock.

Perhaps, but probably not though...

Over the last 30 odd years there have been 10 flag unfurls at the MCG (7), Waverley Park (2) and Ethiad (1)

1991: Collingwood V West Coast - 39266 (Waverley Park)
1992: Hawthorn V Geelong - 34677 (Waverley Park)
1994: Essendon V West Coast - 39492 (MCG)
1996: Carlton V Collingwood - 70152 (MCG)
1997: Nth Melbourne V Melbourne - 35802 (MCG)
2000: Kangaroos V West Coast - 20580 (MCG)
2001: Essendon V Port Adelaide - 34918 (Ethiad)
2009: Hawthorn V Geelong - 69564 (MCG)
2011: Collingwood V Carlton - 88181 (MCG)
2014: Hawthorn V Fremantle - 43583 (MCG)

Evidently the last 5 Tiger unfurls...

1981: Richmond V Essendon - 61908 (MCG)
1975: Richmond V Geelong - 33600 (MCG)
1974: Richmond V Hawthorn - 38734 (MCG)
1970: Richmond V Fitzroy - 38617 (MCG)
1968: Richmond V Carlton - 51938 (MCG)

On recent precedence a Richmond flag unfurl will likely draw 40,000 x 3 = 120,000

some gains made this round
Some gains, but it was a round that the AFL would of thought would've drawn a lot better. The GF replay combined with 2 blockbuster clashes should of done better. In previous year's both the Collingwood-Geelong game and Essendon-Carlton have regularly drawn over 70,000. The Q-clash is also a disappointing crowd (maybe has something to do with the name).

I cry myself to sleep at night sometimes.

Since the premiership cup was introduced in the early 50's, is the flag unfurling even a draw at all? I have never seen it as such, it's just a nice touch that happens before an opening game, but I've never known anyone go with that in mind.
