This.

That said Im sure Geelong would have a markedly larger turnout if its final against North was scheduled on the Saturday or Sunday Afternoon.

Geelong are a regional club they're not a club that suits Friday Night Football unlike the inner city Melbourne clubs

Good crowd at AO today. Ticketek needs to stop pissing around with their ticket releases once the game's sold out. What on earth is with them releasing something like 1600 tickets on Thursday morning only for them to all sell out, then another 1,000 on Friday morning? Where did that extra 1,000 come from, and why couldn't they go on sale on Thursday? In the end there were still standing room tickets for sale, but most people thought the game was sold out because of all the previous sold out announcements during the week.

I'm guessing it would be returns from corporate and sponsor allocations. The AFL would offer thousands of tickets to various sponsors (probably AFL members as well), and given a lot of them would be Victorian they wouldn't take a huge cut of the allocation. Then it just gets returned to the pool.

Just a guess though.

Do the Cats have a significant Melbourne following?

Do the Cats have a significant Melbourne following?

They do but majority of their fan base is in the outer western suburbs of Melbourne such as Wyndham Vale, werribee, hoppers crossing, Tarneit and truganina. Apparently a couple of year ago geelong stated that they have 15,000 members in Melbourne.

In the late-70's and early 80's Geelong would often play out at VFL Park. What the **** was that all about?

Back in those days didn't every VFL club have to pick up the load and play games at Waverley to justify the VFL's investment? Back in the early 1990's didn't they used to play 'neutral' finals (i.e finals featuring MCG co-tenant club) at Waverley.

...at least that's the reason why the 1995 Geelong v Richmond Preliminary Final was hosted out there?

Still looking at early 60,000's.

This time last week there were 12,000 tickets available for the Essendon V North match and that game drew 78,000.

It all depends on how many of these Series Ticket people turn up, that'll determine whether or not it draws anywhere from 60,000 to 65,000.

That's right but I'm sure you'll find the Cats played there more often than even the Melbourne clubs, particularly in the 70's. Perhaps a Geelong supporter who's 45+ could confirm.

I stand corrected. Between 1970 and 1999 total games played at Waverley:

Carlton 45 'Home' and 61 'Away'
Collingwood 50H and 63A
Essendon 43H and 54A
Fitzroy 45H and 54A
Geelong 40H and 46A
Hawthorn 137H and 55A
Melbourne 38H and 53A
North 40H and 51A
Richmond 43H and 53A
Saints 117H and 50A
Dogs 45H and 45A

Still, a relatively large number of home games for Geelong at Waverley. Strange that they'd ask Geelong supporters to travel from Geelong to the outer eastern suburns of Melbourne for a home game. And the attendances to those games were very low from memory.

If Cat fans hate the AFL for fixturing them on Friday nights at the MCG, can you imagine how much they would have hated going to Waverley!

Yet Kangas fans think they can fill the g on Good Friday....

Why does it have to be at the MCG anyway. North Melbourne vs. a popular Victorian club would be a lock to pack out Ethiad

...could even schedule the match around the telethon

because its supposed to be a blockbuster - you have those at Colosseum, not the B grade venue most the city hates

Up until relatively recently (2010) the AFL often scheduled Easter Monday games at Ethiad. I don't necessarily see a problem in playing a Good Friday fixture at Ethiad given its proximity to the seven studios.

I do, If it is not scheduled at the G, people won't look at as a so called block buster, Good monday was never a block buster game until it was at the G.

Essendon vs Collingwood (Anzac Day)
Geelong vs Hawks (easter Monday)
Tigers vs Essendon (Dreamtime)
Tigers play Blues (Easter thursday)

Probably the biggest drawing home and away games over the past 5 years once averaged out all have one thing in common, they are at the G.

If north was to play good friday football at Etihad and get 50000 people, none of the attention will be on this game, it will all be on the night before Easter thursday Tigers vs Blues which is very capable of pulling 80000, therefore making it not a blockbuster game.

If the AFL and north wanted to create another blockbuster game without helping out the already big and powerful clubs even more, why not look at the opportunity to have North Vs Melbourne at the MCG on a good friday. Sure in the first year on melbourne's form it may not be a massive draw card, but you do have an large MCC following in their favour, North have wanted this for years so you would hope their supporters would turn up, and being round 1 Melbourne fans may has a new found optimistic hope this season will be better for the, drawing in a few more. Within a few years and Melbourne returning to some form this could become another blockbuster game while enabling other clubs to have a fair go!

If North Melbourne play Carlton and turn a 35,000 draw into a 55,000 sold out draw is that a success?

Carlton V Richmond would draw 65,000 plus to an early season fixture irrespective of being the first game at the MCG...

These middle/lower drawing fixtures would benefit more from the marquee bounce than the larger drawing games or so the argument goes...

Yes by all means it is a success, but why not dream big?
and Blues have committed to the tigers for round 1 of the immediate future, they would be silly to trade 80000 for 50000

PAX up to 59000 for tomorrow night.

Still looking at early 60,000's which isn't too bad at all...

Anything under 70K would be pretty average imo.

Prime time slot, semi final, club members get a 20% discount, Telstra offering tickets at a 50% discount.

No excuse not to get a massive crowd.

Have you been ignoring the whole Geelong fans hate Friday nights talk? No joke last week on the Geelong supporter bus it took us an 50 minutes to get from South Wharf DFO to the MCG. I'm not going this week because it's just impractical.

Yep I heard the whole Geelong fans hate Friday talk and imo it's not valid excuse not to support your team in a Semi final.

Disclosure: I live in the country also.
