The 2014 TV Ratings thread

lowest Saturday afternoon rating in Melbourne this year. Only the second time in two years that a Melb rating has dipped below 100k (last season r23 Adl v Melb)

Disappointing, though I note that Rich v Bris in round 20 last year when the Tigers were flying could only manage 105 in the same timeslot.

It's partly the Saturday arvo timeslot, but the 1.5 hour delay is increasingly an issue as use of social media and the internet continues to increase. People aren't going to tune into a game they know the score of, particularly when it's so one sided (and expected to be).

Oh Channel 7. Despite the 2.30 local start meaning it won't cut into the news, the Derby will be on live 7mate instead of the main channel on Saturday.

As I have stated earlier in this thread, I am thinking that the AFL and networks are looking at different data. If this isn't the case then the AFL is in serious trouble going off the current figures.

Clear points of contention
1. Sydney is playing well
2. Collingwood is exceeding expectation
3. Self proclaimed giant of the AFL Hawforn are thriving on the field
4. Freo
5. Port
6. Gold Coast playing exiting footy.

These are key clubs in different areas, this is clearly an indication that ratings science isn't effective for the AFL. The Voice for christ sake has regular audiences into the millions???
I don't understand your post. You seem to be out of touch with reality.

1. Sydney is playing well
They've been playing well for the past 20 years. Why would their 2014 form have any impact on the overall ratings slump?

2. Collingwood is exceeding expectation
They're exactly where most people had them in their ladder predictions - outside the Top 4 and fighting for 6th/7th/8th

3. Self proclaimed giant of the AFL Hawforn are thriving on the field
Facetious comment with troll overtones. If they're not as big as they think are, then why bother to include them on your list?

4. Freo
They're Perth's second team. The Eagles rate much higher and they're outside the Top 8

5. Port
They're Adelaide's second team. The Crows rate much higher and they're outside the Top 8

6. Gold Coast playing exiting footy.
They could kick 30 goals a week and have nude cheerleaders behind the goals. They are still Gold Coast. Nobody cares about them.

I think it's pretty obvious why the TV ratings are down in 2014.

Here's the ladder after Rd 14 with the win differential from 2013 to 2014
I've bolded the teams whose W/L record has improved from the same time last year

Port Adelaide +3
Hawthorn -2
Sydney +0.5
Fremantle -0.5
Geelong -2
Collingwood 0
North Melb +3
Gold Coast +3

----------------
Essendon -3
West Coast 0
Adelaide 0
Carlton -2
W Bulldogs +1
GWS Giants +4
Melbourne +2

Richmond -6
Brisbane -1
St Kilda 0

Best supported Victorian teams:
  • Hawthorn - going OK, but not as strong a contender as in 2013
  • Geelong - going OK, but not as strong a contender as in 2013
  • Collingwood - going OK, but they're in transition, not really a contender in 2014
  • Essendon - Gone backwards. Struggling on and off the field in 2014
  • Carlton - having a poor season, the writing was on the wall very early on
  • Richmond - having a terrible season, back in the basement
  • St Kilda - scheissenhausen

Best supported teams from outside Victoria:
  • Adelaide - pretty ordinary season so far, they expected to do better
  • West Coast - pretty ordinary season, trouble brewing, they expected to do better

Teams on the up:
  • Port Adelaide - top of the ladder, flag contenders
  • North Melbourne - certain finalists
  • Gold Coast - certain finalists
  • GWS Giants - they gotten off the bottom of the ladder
  • Melbourne - Paul Roos messiah factor, competitive in most games

It's quite plain to see that the improvers are not the highest-rating teams. Quite the opposite.

Meanwhile the two strongest teams in the AFL and likely Grand Final combatants are Sydney and Fremantle.
They have decent hometown followings, but I think most rival fans don't get too excited about watching either of them play.

Perth had just as many people watching Brisbane V North (68k) on Saturday night as it did on Friday night ( Geelong V Essendon) (69K)

That makes little sense, more people watch tele on friday than saturday night, both Geelong and Essendon are popular clubs, and the game was very close.

I link them and take a interest in them, but i find myself increasingly sceptical about them.

It does make sense given people are at home at 5:30 on a Saturday, but not on a Friday.

7 continuing to troll the AFL by putting the derby on mate in Perth. I guess they didn't want to upset regular viewers of 'The Neighbors', 'Home in WA' and 'Million dollar minute'.

Did take that into account, as well as the lead from the derby, but still don't think it makes sense, the freeway is a hell of lot clealer friday arvo than any other day during the week.

Agree with your second point.

I find the process of ratings for sports telecasts (especially for footballing codes) to definitely be flawed, even though i admit to finding them interesting.

It's like......if somebody with a ratings box's team (of whom must randomly be represented here mind you) is playing and they always watch but need to go out the night they play and miss it....then all of a sudden ~20,000 less people watched that particular match (or whatever the figure they attach to it)....?....Really?

I understand they try to represent a broad range of demographics but sport is more subject to passion and history than a random person with a ratings box's browsing tendencies....sport (and more specifically supporting a team) just doesn't seem like it can be calculated as accurately as a show trying to appeal to as broad a range as possible (the voice etc..) that gets aired at the same time every week and has consistent advertising nation wide (which even then the numbers are guesstimates..)....flawed system imo.

I interpreted his post as - these are the things that are going well at the moment and as they are in multiple different locations, it would logically follow that ratings should be strong. Except the figures appear to be soft. So the contention is then are the figures correct and then if they are correct how does the tv networks justify paying so much and is there a real danger that they wont pay so much next time.

Apologies to #1873 United if I have misinterpreted.

So would the Sunday night rating be seen as validation of Sunday night or condemnation?

Theres been four sunday night matches (ie. 7.10pm starts), the only 2 matches to be broadcast to date on national tv have been Essendon v Carlton (784 rating/no regional data), and Collingwood v Carlton (533/no fox or regional data). North v Richmond was a fox broadcast, and West Coast v North was a Fox/Perth FTA broadcast.

Still outrates pretty much any afternoon broadcast, which is a point in its ratings favour I guess. This slot will be decided by attendances not broadcasts one suspects - given Mclachlans remarks on On the Couch. where he insinuated that how sundays were rostered next year depoended much on the crowd this weekend.

But how does that 500 to 700k national compare to what else is on Sunday nights? Doesn't voice outrate footy in the Melbourne ratings?

Seriously? Football - either code - doesnt rate as high as Voice or Masterchef unless its Origin. L<Ast night for example - the prematch made it to 19 out of the top 20, but the game didnt.

Amazing ratings for the Showdown! Are these the highest ratings you've seen for a Showdown since you've been collecting ratings data, Wookie?

Just on ratings, the AFL must get better figures than what are publicly available - the league reporting 1.019 million average viewers. We know metro + fox came to 820 last night, tas could get another 50 odd, think tvs figures cut out at 760, allocating less than 115k to Vic Regionals.

After all these "ratings" are only an estimate as they cannot take into account how many people are actually watching each TV set at a given time and where they are watching - at home with friends or outside on mobile devices in Pubs, Hotels/Motels and Clubs.

I have always thought that the AFL figures are under quoted so the AFL themselves are most likely on the money with their figures..

Cheers mate. Highest FTA ratings in the new era of simulcasted Fox Footy broadcasts, great result!
