The 2015 Attendance Thread

Okay, but at the end of the members pre sale all game going members have had the opportunity to purchase tickets..

And not all members buy during the exclusive period

To be blunt, it was two years ago, and we lost the game. We cant prove facts on how many of what fans were there, and more importantly - who cares? It just makes us look petty

I was only using that game as an example because the figures were released. Wasn't big noting or anything, just stating that it would be a pretty good indicator of crowds splits within the finals series for any game. That is all.
Not sure why people on this board have to continually go out of there way to make someone look stupid.

Because this is a board to discuss attendances, not pump up some "my club is the best" crap

When people are saying attendances at our games are 70:30 in our favour against the blues, it's just plain wrong

Where have the swans supporters disappeared?
Anything under 40000 would be horrible!
That wouldn't even fill the SCG.

It's a final, and it doesn't matter where a final is, that should be your motivation to attend.

So much for 50000, seriously!

Same thing as with games at Docklands, some stadiums just get no love. Supporters hate the ANZ. Any code. lol. Plus North arent going to exactly swarm the place with supporters.

I agree that Docklands has been fallen out of love with too, but like for example if Geelong or any Melbourne club had to play a final in the place, you can guarantee a full house.
No matter where a final is held you a venue shouldn't be used as an excuse.

You cant make people like a stadium, and Sydney folks really dont like it. Look at NRL crowds at the place. Its packed for Origin, the Grand Final, and little else.

To be fair, there aren't many NRL stadiums that are packed at any time, unless they hold roughly the same amount of people as a telephone booth. Even Suncorp Stadium had only 1 regular season game get within 12k of its 52k capacity this year. And SFS only reaches half of its 44k capacity around twice a year. :drunk:

You might want to look at the attendances at finals at Docklands. Not one has sold out, in fact there's only been 1 crowd (out of 5 finals) above 40k, and that was back in 2000. For instance, you remember that final where Buddy kicked the late goal from outside 50 to win it? 36k attendance, despite the hordes of Adelaide fans.

The AFL sells bay to bay for finals

I remember back to the Hawthorn v Geelong in the 2013 PF whith 5-6 empty bays at the top of the GSS and Ponsford Stand in spite of the 86,000 attendance.

The empty seats look rubbish on TV but that's the price you pay for full ticketed matches

Official crowd: 70,879 at the MCG

Acceptable and in line with the recent Hawthorn v South Australian SF / PF's

2014 PF Hawthorn v Port Adelaide 74,856
2015 SF Hawthorn v Adelaide 70,879
2012 PF Hawthorn v Adelaide 69,186

Can't fault any crowd so far this finals series (the Homebush game tomorrow notwithstanding)

As for the MCG games, Dogs v Crows (60,782 - MCC est 55,000), Hawks v Crows (70,879 - MCC est 65,000) and Tigers v North (90,186 - MCC est 80,000) all beat the MCC line by a considerable margin

Sometimes less is more for Melbourne finals...

I'm skeptical about the cause of the falloff in popularity of ANZ Stadium and especially the motive behind the way in which the issue has been presented in the AFL media. If I had time, I might be tempted to go back and examine the timing of media reports to see whether the drive for AFL to abandon the stadium was initially media driven or simply the media passively responding to a prior clear trend of falling attendances.

The main reason for skepticism is that there is an obvious preference among the rugby codes and soccer for ANZ to be converted into a permanent rectangular stadium, but that requires excluding cricket and AFL from the stadium. For that to happen without the AFL losing face it will have required managing public perceptions so that AFL fans feel that they have voted with their feet, voluntarily abandoning the stadium, rather than being booted out to make way for the other football codes.

This appears to be a backward step for the AFL in Sydney, but perhaps one that behind the scenes it could do little to prevent from happening. It means that there can never be a big attendance at an AFL game in Sydney into the foreseeable future.

People voted with their feet. You cant pretend a 50,000 crowd is a 19,000 crowd - as it was at a final there a few years ago.

So as bad as getting less than 40000 to an AFL final of will probably still beat an NRL final from 2 Sydney teams?

They must Cringe seeing 90000 at the G last week, even 70000 and 60000 against interstate teams!

SFS only fits 44000 (and several thousands of those are SCG members)

You really can't compare attendances across the codes...one is ideal for TV, the other is best watched live.

That said with no Melbourne final next week, the Storm should sell out their Preliminary Final

Take last Friday night for example. At the same time as the Storm were putting the Roosters to the sword at the Sydney Football Stadium , the West Coast Eagles were taking on Hawthorn in Perth. Both matches were finals – but what an extraordinary difference in ambience! For while at the SFS, the spectators were scattered around only "like confetti in a graveyard" – to use John Arlott's felicitous phrase of long ago – for a sum total of just 20,000, over in Perth the West Coast Eagles took on Hawthorn before 40,000!

On the Sunday, Richmond played North Melbourne before 90,000! And it is often like that. Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne often have AFL matches, where an errant ant could not fit. Sydney, rarely. Grand finals, yes, State of Origins, and very occasionally Bledisloes.

Why the difference? The first and most obvious reason is because in strong AFL cities they put something in the water that turns the people a tad whacko, from birth on, which just makes them attend Aussie rules matches, makes them define themselves by their football tribe. And in those other cities the focus is not fractured the way it is in our fair metropolis with so many other things calling on our attention. (Remember Paul Keating: "If you're not living in Sydney, you're really just camping out.")

But the upshot of the question is the same. Why are we in NSW considering spending squillions on knocking down a perfectly serviceable stadium, to build another extravaganza in much the same spot, when there seems to be so little need for more facilities than we have?

Sydney believe the crowd for their cut-throat semi-final against North Melbourne could have been boosted by around 10,000 if it had been played at the SCG.

Instead, an estimated crowd of 30,000 is expected at ANZ Stadium – which has a seating capacity of 82,000 – in what's expected to be Sydney's last home game and final at the venue.

The view in the Swans' camp is that the same Saturday night finals fixture against North – with its 7.20pm eastern timeslot – would have drawn as many as 40,000 to the SCG, which has a seating capacity of 48,000.

The deal binding Sydney to play finals and three home-and-away matches annually at the Olympic Park venue until the end of 2016 is set to be terminated a year prematurely. Fairfax Media understands that the announcement could be made before the end of this month.

While Sydney will be reluctant to pay for terminating the ANZ deal early, it needs no convincing about the rationale. Fairfax understands the AFL has reached a similar view and that the league has impressed on the Swans, privately, that it approves of the club's position on the matter.

Only watched it on tv, but it seemed like there was a huge contingent of Tiger fans there.

Wouldn't be surprised if they outnumbered the Hawks;).
