WAFL Ratings are definitely up since the move to commercial tv - double.

2014 on the ABC
R1 - 19k
R2 - 28k
R3 - 11k
Total - 58 @ 19k

2015 on 7/7mate
R1 - 40
R2 - 31
R3 - 42
Total - 113 @ 38k

It will be interesting to see if the VFL ratings also improve on CH 7 this season.Being on at 12 noon on Saturdays might impact on the figures.

The Swans Dons game looked like a blowout, very good figures, it is possible that the Hird factor may have contributed to higher than usual ratings, maybe if Essendon have a decent year the voyeur figures will stay.

It's fantastic that a game like Melbourne vs the Suns can get 253 on fox.

Indeed it is, probably the oldest Football club in the world V one of the newest in a non traditional area and lets be honest Melbourne has had SFA in the way of success in living memory. ( most peoples)

I really do like the GC style ( last year ) open fast footy, that to me is an attraction rather than the flooding ultra defensive style, perhaps that drags the punters in.

crowds have collapsed too. Wanderers barely 9k to their home game Friday night.

A lesson for us all about the Sydney bandwagon. Amazing thing about the Wanderers crowds is that I believe all but about 3k seats at their home ground are season ticket holders. So it's not just people not buying tickets, it's people with tickets that don't want to show up. Remarkable turnaround.

And it was only a few months ago that we were told the Wanderers would soon be Australia's most popular sporting club, and that GWS would never, ever get better crowds than them. If GWS start stringing a few wins together then they could easily top them this year.

Terrible ratings.

Channel 7 deserves it for being complete ******* morons

If the West Coast game were on the main channel, perth's ratings would have been 160k+

And if brisbane's game were on the main channel, it would have been 90k+

Sooner 10 get's the rights, the better the ratings will be.

It also shows the the soccer cannot match it with the AFL and NRL big boys when they go head to head and they foolishly have their GF in May this year.

Exactly, all this talk of soccer 'taking over' is absolute rubbish. The commercial networks don't want to touch it because they all know its a ratings loser and the recent success of the BBL will only serve to take more viewers away from the A-League

The simple fact is that Australians will not accept a sport which is not played at its pinnacle (AFL, NRL, Cricket, Super Rugby) therefore the 4th rate A-League will forever remain a niche sporting league for the diehards

7 haven't even promoted the footy at all in Sydney. unless you actively follow AFL the only game you will ever be aware of is Sydney home games because of the ad's that are run.

they pay for exclusive rights you'd think they'd run promo's all week atleast for round one. not ad's for ******* home and away. :drunk:

It's pretty ridiculous really. They didn't even say that the footy starts tonight on the news either (Thurs night)! :drunk:

I doubt it matters much in the context of crowds, especially when so many people that have already paid for their tickets aren't showing up. Their crowds are going to ratshit because they're losing, it's as simple as that.

go and learn how the FTA ratings system works! after so, you will then work out why the Networks don't take them seriously!
major games, live FTA will regularly be out rated by lifestyle programs like the Block, MKR by double! yet networks pay billions of dollars over 5 years for broadcast rights.

does anyone have information how the Pay TV ratings systems work? are they individually metered? or like FTA. 3000k homes in the metro major cities across Australia and around 2000k rating boxes in regional cities to represent 23 million Australians

But how reliable are the figures that get divined like entrails from 8.30 every morning by network executives, media buyers and water-cooler pundits? The system is far from bulletproof - more on that shortly - but purely on the mechanics of collecting evidence about who watches what and when, Australia compares well internationally.

Panels of home viewers supply the raw data that shapes what airs. The five major mainland cities are monitored by a panel of about 3000 homes. A further 2000 homes speak for regional Australia. (A third panel, with 1200 homes, tracks pay TV.)

Throughout the industry, there is broad acceptance that the panels are representative and accurate, even if decisions about critically acclaimed shows (Nine's treatment of The West Wing comes to mind) make viewers scratch their heads.

Let me see a single link that says that networks arent taking them seriously. I havent found anything that backs that assertion - not least because the Oztam who does the measuring is OWNED by the commercial tv networks.

oztam is owned by the three commercial networks, but seen to be independently sourced:rolleyes:
shows like the Block, MKR & better homes and gardens regularly out rate live to air football games, yet TV networks pay billions of dollars for the broadcast rights!:thumbsu:

so how serious do the networks take those ratings?

while you're there, a person who likes to act like, who knows how the ratings work, do you have any information on the Pay TV ratings?

Serious enough to base advertising rates and renew or cancel tv shows based on it. But you know this already.

Google. And use your eyes. I literally posted this just before the post you responded to.

AFL enables channel 7 to rate strongly in Melbourne and Adelaide (and Perth, when on 7) while allowing for other potentially high-rating shows to be scheduled for Sydney and Brisbane (with AFL on 7mate). The strong ratings figures are an average over a fairly long duration (coverage goes for several hours and extends beyond the 6.00-8:30 peek viewing period), which contributes to a strong result for the entire 6pm - midnight period.

NRL enables similar for channel 9 (with NRL on 9 dominating Sydney and Brisbane, with other stuff shown on the main channel in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth).

Another consideration is that footy is shown free to air on evenings (Friday and Saturday) with otherwise comparatively low TV viewing numbers. The relevant comparison is probably not with the Block or MKR but with whatever would be shown on these lower viewing nights.

Last Thursday night is an example. AFL very comfortably topped the ratings in Melbourne and Adelaide (AFL in these cities was easily the highest rating show not just for its time slot but for the entire evening), and with no NRL that night, AFL helped give channel 7 and the 7 network very comfortable wins.

Perth is unique because of the significantly different timezone. Although AFL would rate higher if always shown on 7 rather than 7mate, the 7 network currently achieves strong ratings for both 7 and 7mate in Perth on Friday nights. Showing AFL that night on 7 would mean moving the news to a secondary channel, which the network execs may be reticent to do. At the moment, channel 7 news dominates in Perth (and Adelaide), which helps it keep up more or less with channel 9 news nationally, even though 9 regularly wins Melbourne and Sydney. The execs at 7 may not want to mess with that .
